Maybe I'm the minority - but I think all of Star Wars under Disney (besides Andor) has been bad in the most basic sense that the writing is just poor. Rogue One is fun, but I can't even pretend it's a truly great film. Every other single Star Wars project over the past 15 years has lacked creativity, featured poor acting, included subpar choreography, and all the while undermining the franchise's strongest elements, like how Kenobi robs both the prequels and A New Hope of the main Vader/Kenobi duels. I don't think The Acolyte's lack of a second season leaves Star Wars in a dire place at all. The franchise has been in that same place for a very long time. Andor's positive reception signals some optimism, but they have so much in the pipeline at all times, it's impossible to ever ensure things are headed in a good direction even when they're going ok.

I think Eric Kripke (showrunner of Supernatural and The Boys) said it best --- “The downside of streaming is that a lot of filmmakers who work in streaming didn’t necessarily come out of that network grind. They’re more comfortable with the idea that they could give you 10 hours where nothing happens until the eighth hour. That drives me f-ing nuts, personally. As a network guy who had to get you people interested for 22 f-ing hours a year, I didn’t get the benefit of, ‘Oh, just hang in there and don’t worry. The critics will tell you that by Episode 8, shit really hits the fan.’ Or anyone who says, ‘Well, what I’m really making is a 10-hour movie.’ F-k you! No you’re not! Make a TV show. You’re in the entertainment business.”
He's talking to you Disney. If I'm them, I offer him a boatload of money to come over and head up the TV side of their business because it is clear they don't know how to make TV.

Isnt supernatural one of those shows tht ur told to hang in there until it gets good? Seems weird coming from him. Hell network tv arguably did it worse alot of times because of the 22-25 episode format. Star trek tng, a show tht gets called one of the best scifi shows of all time, infamously has some of the worst first two seasons of tv a show can have, so its not like this is a new thing, we just have higher expectations for tv nowadays.

I am old enough to remember when really really good shows sometimes had rough first or even first couple of seasons before they found their footing. The streaming era demands perfection out of the gate or the axe comes down and I think that is unfortunate. Maybe it is cause they are spending too much on the shows, or maybe it is the current philosophy of executives, but I fear a lot of good stories aren't getting told because of this. Also without Jecki I am not sure I cared about more Acolyte. Hashtag Justice For Jecki

    • @njebei
      @njebei 2 місяці тому

Jecki was the most compelling character on the show for me as well. I could have watched a season of her and Sol going from planet to planet as Jedi. Intermix their scenes with Osha wandering through the galaxy trying to find her place. I wish Disney understood how to make TV shows -- they used to know how to do it but those people are long gone.

Shogun was so amazing because it was a ONE SEASON show. Just imagine how bloated and unsatisfying it would have been if it knew going into it that it had three seasons? Imagine how it would have introduced the beloved mystery box into the show, where it would be loaded down with "Who's the traitor?" and having Toranaga's brother or whoever switching sides multiple times until we get to the final season. Mariko's sacrifice pushed off to season three. Etc etc.
MAKE ONE-SEASON SHOWS! If it's a hit, make sequels. I have semi-high hopes for Shogun season two, as they will have to create an entirely new story with new arcs and new endgames. If they are honest about their two-season renewal, then at worst, it's only one season they can push off the major resolutions.
The scourge of modern franchise storytelling is "We've got a great multi-season story planned." Every problem with The Acolyte (and with Ahsoka) can be boiled down to the contorted storytelling decisions made prolong any resolution to some imagined later season. Showrunners want to make shows that will allow them to be employed for multiple years. But none of them have the skill to pull that off. I see this in all shows. Severance should have been a one-season show. Stranger Things should have been a one-season show. Every one of these shows could have told their story in one rock-solid season, but cut themselves off at the ankle by pushing off all the important stuff to a later season.

Disney needs to figure out how to make actual TV shows again. They keep making movies disguised as TV shows. Go back and rewatch Agents of Shield, Daredevil, or Agent Carter. All were good shows made by ABC Studios with compelling storylines and made for a fraction of what they are spending on the garbage they putting on Disney Plus. The Acolyte could have been a great movie. It could have made $200 million on a $125 million budget and then it would have then ended up on their Disney Plus catalog like the TV show. I hope a lot of the top decision makers are fired for this mess because it is clear these people don't know how to do their jobs.
I'm not sure how the executives at Disney can't figure out how to make TV shows for Marvel and Star Wars. They are thinking way too much. Use the Agents of Shield model. The cost should be cheaper -- use Netflix's budgets per episode as a guide. The stories should be lesser stakes because when every show has high stakes, no show has high stakes. Break the formula -- make it a comedy -- or a detective show -- or any genre. Put it in a different part of the universe with nods to the greater universe like in Andor. $180 million for The Acolyte and $250 million for Secret Wars isn't sustainable, especially when you consider what we saw on the screen. It's maddening when you see what they were able to do with this massive budget then compare it to something like Godzilla Minus One. I refuse to pay for a monthly Disney sub until they figure out how to make TV shows again because I'm not going to fund this type of foolishness.

There’s something really worrying about the belief that” incel dudebros” got The acolyte cancelled. It was a terrible show.
I’m a casual fan in the sense that my love of SW is from the original trilogy. I haven’t read any books, EU stuff, or comics. I’m not deep into the lore.
I watched the prequels and thought they were pretty bad with the possible exception of Revenge of the Sith.
I watched the sequels and they were at best meh! Though I really struggled with how Luke Skywalker was depicted. But interestingly I’d watch TLJ before I’d watch Rise of Skywalker again. That was such an insultingly bad film.
I’m in the minority about The Mandalorian, I thought it was less than average. I didn’t watch Boba Fett and tried to watch Asoka and just couldn’t do it, giving up after ep2. It was dull.
Andor is the only thing that has got me excited and I’m just hoping season 2 will deliver. It meets your hallmark of something new, plus the call for more diverse characters, a gay couple and strong women. But the difference is these identity markers were not front and centre in the story. The story came first. Even the minor characters were engaging - Lieutenant Gorn, Tamaryn, Nemek and Skeen in the Aldhani arc - all memorable characters who you could identify with and feel something for.
There’s no one in The Acolyte that I felt any connection to - possibly with the exception of Master Sol. I just felt sad for him, even though he seemed to be making strange choices and decisions.
There’s no escaping the fact that The Acolyte is awful. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” The writers and creators may have had good intentions but just couldn’t or wasn’t able to deliver on their vision.
    Enough of “performative DEI” please!🙏🏾

Sadly. Its for the best. 180M$ for a below average show is just not sustainable or reasonable. Shame. I was really excited for this show. But the weird character motives and changing on a switch. How they showed the Jedi and Sith. I just felt empty, angry, then disappointing.
Also. I'm a bit tired of people saying or attacking the Star Wars fans. Fans generally like Andor, Ahsoka (I didn't like but it has its fans), Rogue One, and Mando. All have diverse casts. Fans just want good content from what I see. Sure you get some bad apples but I've also seen some hateful things said towards this show being cancelled and attacking the fans.
At least we have Andor season 2 to look forward to. Loved the first season and easily the best show Disney has produced.
Side note. Been watching Star Wars: Darth Plagueis - Episode I on UA-cam. Why can a fan video be better then a Disney product?

I agree. Disney execs are going to have to figure out how to make TV shows again. They need to let the characters gel with smaller stakes with a small core cast so the audience gets to know them then expand the cast in later seasons when the writers have figured out the characters. If I were Disney, I'd let showrunners know future projects will have budgets half as large and force them to get innovative like TV shows had to do in the 1990s and early 2000s. They need to understand they are going to have to reuse sets and focus more on compelling dialogue because the $180 million budget is what killed this show. It's inexcusable we barely got to know half the characters on the show. The episode with Jecki and Yord would have hit harder if we knew them better. TV is supposed to be slower paced because it's got more real estate but Disney keeps trying to make 6 hour movies on the TV and it's never going to work.

I feel this way about every bloated show/movie that is either a remake or sequel to a long time show/movie which only shows there is no new ideas being churned out. Now this show was not great at all, but the online discourse about star wars, HOD, and anything else that becomes conversation not about the merits of the show but the color of the actor's skin or their gender only makes the objective conversation about show quality harder. Star Wars needs to fail harder and then disappear for another generation.

At the end of the day, if you blow $200M on a streaming show and it doesn’t turn a profit then it doesn’t matter how good or how bad something was made. Case in point, Andor has incredible writing but it’s one of the lowest watch streaming shows on Disney Plus. I don’t even think the Mandalorian movie is a lock. I’m ok with Disney taking a break with Star Wars.

@@firestarter000001 Corporation doesn’t operate on the principle of “like” or “hate” because money doesn’t discriminate against race, culture, sex, etc. I truly believe Kathleen Kennedy when she said she doesn’t have an agenda beyond giving female and minorities opportunities. The problem is, you can’t spend $$$$ and just think it’s “automatic” that the fan base who has spent their life savings are going to continue spending a $400 on a Star Wars Hot Toy figure, $30 ea for Star Wars Black series figures, blowing $5000 for one night at the Star Cruiser Hotel with new characters while re-writing/erasing the past. A HUGE chunk of why Star Wars is worth so much is not the original films but the toy deals. That’s what buffers the losses. No one buys your products, the line is as good as dead. I’m sorry there’s no way I’m blowing $400-1000 on dead Jedi figures. All killed in ONE episode. At the end of the day you have to SELL a product. Not run a series, “Defund the Jedi!” And people will throw the shirt off your back for the privilege of owning an Acolyte exclusive. 🤷‍♂️

For years, Kathleen Kennedy has been going out of her way to destroy what made Star Wars what it was (she had to get rid of the more popular competition), to replace it with something completely different but with the same name (watch The Acolyte to get a close-up look at HER 'vision'.Or not), while also DELIBERATELY driving away the original fan base, hoping to replace it with a new 'modern audience' (which for some reason never turned up for her anti-Lucas 'masterpiece',).
    NOT the brightest of ideas.
It was only when Favreau got involved and with Chapek's backing, revitalised live action Star Wars with The Mandalorian, while trying to return it to it's roots that things started looking up again.
And then they got rid of Chapek, brought back Iger, apparently sidelined Favreau for Season 3 of The Mandalorian, and things started going downhill once more.
Star Wars fans MIGHT have had more goodwill towards Lucasfilm, if KK hadn't insisted on refusing to give them what they wanted simply to serve her interests.
Which is apparently a fixation on people's gender, skin colour and bedroom habits as opposed to good writing and interesting characters.
