Removing a Floor Tile without Breaking it - Re-Use Discontinued Tile

- I need to piece in some floor tiles after removing some cabinetry. The problem is, they don't make them anymore. I've started using this method to remove tiles from places where I can cover the loss and save them for re-use. Here, I'm chipping out a half tile to clear a space where I need to install a full one. I'll use the half piece against the wall, if I can pull it without breaking it. It's very tedious work, but don't rush it.

Nice video and thank you.
Ty for the video, removing two interior walls in kitchen separating dining room.... need to cover tile gaps on floor and cannot match early 2000 tile.... so will try to relocate same tile from where new kitchen Island will go.... to cover those gaps... your video was spot on..
Thanks Jose!. Another place to steal tile from is closets. Good luck on your project.
This video saved me a lot of money. Thank you so very much!
Awesome! Congratulations!!!
Thanks! I didn’t know I could use my saws all! I thought I would have to buy a whole new tool.
Lol at the ending!
Great ending
R.I.P. lil bug
Thanks so much, I am also interested in the efficiency. Usually, how many tiles or how many square meters can be removed in 1 hour? Thanks!!!
I really don't know. This is a very tedious, slow task, dependent on how well the original tiles are adhered. I only pulled a handful as needed. Removing multiple square meters and then cleaning the residue off all for reuse probably would not be worth it.
Thank you!!!
Thank you for this video. Your putty knife links to a page with a "stiff" or "flex" option as well as several different lengths. Which are you using in the video?
I believe I'm using a 1.5" flexible version, a Husky from Home Depot. I think the one in the link is similar.
@@AZDIYGuy perfect thanks again
❤ thanks what is the name of that sawzall bladd type..have never seen it before. Thanks Dan

@@AZDIYGuy hey thanks so much Dan from Toronto!
If someone is building A home out of reclaimed materials, this is the way to go to get tiles for bathroom, kitchen, and swimming pool.
Great video :) This is exactly what I need to do... How many blades did you wind up using? Also, how did you remove the thin set? Is muriatic acid good? Thanks much, Rob
I used two blades throughout about 8 tile removals around the house. I removed the thinset with a light tap of a screwdriver, some pick tools, a wire brush, and a flap disc in my grinder. Tedious. Here's the post with more detail: www.azdiyguy.com/blog/the-floor-in-front-of-the-door-missing-tile-challenge
How well would it work with a full tile? I seems a full tile would be easier to break?
It is definitely a little harder to do. The tricky part is to be able to get to the edges to start working underneath along the long edges. I pulled a good handful from around the house where I could farm for full tiles where they would be covered or hidden. It took a lot of patience to take it really slow.
Great video thank you. Question: I don't mind breaking the tile do you think circular saw would work?
I would think so, with a diamond blade. Then again, if you were not planning on saving the tile, gloves, safety glasses, and a hammer would do the trick.
I think that a circular saw would kick up a lot more dust than the recip saw, but maybe that's not a concern.
Meticulous attention to detail. I wish I could hire you to remove the tile in my house!
NOOO. That was scary
What about how to go about removing the old kwikset from the tile itself?
I used a chiseling action with a blunt screwdriver and a very light touch, then a grinder with a flap disk, a wire brush, and then little hand picks, kind of like a dentist's. There's photos in the blog post.
Now you can soak your tiles in Muriatic Acid 50/50 for 24 hours and then just hand wire brush the dissolved sand/thinset off the back......
I am not able to take the tile so easily from the concrete… how is this floor pasted or cemented…?
Impressive stuff I need to save my tiles too for reuse. Do you think this is possible for spanish wood porcelain tiles?
I think so. Each case is different, but the trick is to take your time and not rush it.
This may work with a cheap adhesive but good luck when you have C2 S2 adhesive.
I'm not familiar with that, thank goodness. I have heard of R2 D2 though.
what is the name of that machine tool?
It is a Reciprocating Saw, held upside down. This one is cordless, battery powered model. I used it with a Grout Removal Blade. Both are listed in the description with Amazon affiliate links.
If this trick works on granite, I will subscribe
You drive a hard bargain! 😀 Alas, I don't know, since I haven't tried it, but I don't see why not.
question is...how many were broken prior to successfully getting one out..
I broke one completely, snapped a corner on another, then had straight success for a half dozen around the house, once I had the process worked out. Just don't rush it. Don't use force.
Hi
One guy I was talking suggested to add a lot of water around and under the tile as well do you think this may help?
I ran out of tiles and need one to replace one on the kitchen floor I was going to take one from under the stove.
That's a great place to snag a hidden tile, along with closets, under the fridge, or if a cabinet will come out. I've not heard the water trick, but I don't see how it would hurt. It might get a little muddy with the grout powder and bits, but it would keep the airborne dust down.

Hay buddy I want to really know is ceramic tile can remove without damage?
It was some kind of ceramic, yes. It's still a little tricky not to damage any. I did break one here and there. Its tough to get started without breaking the first one.
We have some ugly tiles above original victorian tiles. I’m afraid if I damage the original tiles. can I use your method to remove the top ones?
Boy, I don't know. It seems like that would be really delicate painstaking work. It probably depends how it was done and with what materials. Good luck!!!
I wanted to do this… but it has been imposible!!!
What bit for sawzall n where did u get it
I believe it was this one from Amazon: amzn.to/32co1ey There are several others on there that look like they'd do the trick too. Good luck!
I want to lift some victorian mosaic floor tiles and reuse them, do you think its impossible?
I wouldn't think it's impossible, but if they are valuable, it's risky.
I would want this but too much work
What's my chances of doing this with a granite tile, no grout joint, on top of a heat element? Or is there a way to get some type of liquid epoxy type product down under there and get it to stick again?
I've head about syringe applied epoxies, but never tried them in that application. Seems like it could work. Good luck with it!
A cold chisel works for removing grout, mortar. It is not the right too for removing the tile. Use a putty knife, which is much thinner and can get under the tile better, and will not break the tile nearly as easily.
That was a putty knife.
@@AZDIYGuy I don't know how my comment ended up on your video , which I had not seen. I was commenting on one by a young woman who was using a 1" cold chisel and talking about being careful not to break it ,and how not to cut yourself. Only thing I can think is that autoplay often turns itself on, on youtube, which I find annoying . Sorry, keep up the good work.
Those tiles are lose already 🥴
Weird comment dude.
Get yourself some knee pads pal!
Indeed! I'm not getting any younger for sure. I do have some now.
@@AZDIYGuy none of us are. Glad to hear you aren’t being a savage on them knees anymore 😂
please wear knee pads.. you will regret not wearing them later in life.. thanks for this video
Good point! I do wear them sometimes, especially now that I've reached "later in life". Thanks!
That hardly seems worth the time
In my case it was necessary. I could not find the tile anywhere ( late 80's early 90's era) and I needed every scrap I could get my hands on. The whole house is done with it. Here's more: www.azdiyguy.com/blog/the-floor-in-front-of-the-door-missing-tile-challenge
Dude,
You R out of your mind....
Why's that?
