K-8 D-5751 flew silver distance with me in Örlinghausen in August of‘68 at the tender age of 16 and maybe 25 Stunden TT. What a thrill winch towing, hanging out on the airfield all day, and flying the -13 with instructors like Herr Rademacher who could climb under an overcast sky. All that, and the F-102’s whizzing by, scaring the bejeebers out of me.
Cute. I soloed in a K8, and did my first cross country flights in it. In the one we had, the canopy had been changed to be all plexiglass, so the view was amazing. The Ka6 felt claustrophobic after :D

He obviously landed on the designated landing zone beside the winch take-off point on the glider field, which is parallel to a rather commercial-looking airport.
Of course, beeing in the allowed range of the center of gravity is very important for every flying machine! If you are to light weighted you have to bring in additional weight in form of "lead pillows" in a K 8 which need to be secured tightly (can block the stick if it/they move!!). In newer gliders, e.g. ASK21 which had the same Designer as this K 8 B = Rudolf Kaiser ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Kaiser ), you have up to 12 blocks of lead with 1 kg which can be secured with a screw in the front cockpit floor. 12 x 1 kg lead blocks works like 15 kg, because they are placed even more in front than the gravity center of the front pilot. A minimum of 70 kg are normally needed in the front seat of the ASK21, therefore with 12 blocks the pilot has to be at least 55 kg minus the weight of the security parachute. Sometimes the very young students (mostly the girls) have to install extra lead pillows, if they can´t even reach the 55 kg!! See here the weight and balance sheet of Alexander Schleicher Flugzeugbau for the ASK21: www.alexander-schleicher.de/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/210_TM35_E_HB.pdf AS = Alexander Schleicher (manufacturer) K = Rudolf Kaiser (Designer) 21 = 21st model of Alexander Schleicher Flugzeugbau Bigger problems arise if you are a "larger" person. It is logical that someone "larger" is also carrying more weight, and therfore the maximum load can be reached. In this case you have to stay on the ground unfortunately, until Helium drugs are available. But 100-110 kg are typical loads for a glider in the seat. On most "modern" gliders more weight in form of water can be carried in the wings, for better performance on high speeds, affecting the centre of gravity lesser, because the tanks are nearer to the center of gravity. The ASK21 being an example once more, doesn´t have the option of carrying additional water ballast, neither has this "old" wooden wings K 8 B, with a covered tubular steel frame fuselage. The maximum load on a ASK21 in the front seat is 110 kg. The maximum load on this K 8 B is even more at about 120 kg !! gross weight 310kg - empty weight 191 kg = 119 kg en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schleicher_K_8 These values can decrease, if an airplane has undergone repair works, or extra instrumentation and therefore gained extra weight beacause of these "modifications". The weight and balance sheets have to be adapted accordingly, and are found as stickers in the cockpit, mentioning minimal an maximum load.
Stefan, I am considering changing my Ka-8 into a Cabriolet. Would you have any idea if there are any drawings of the modifications to be made, any LTB doing the work?
Hi odd question. How tall are you? I am looking to buy something like this however at 6ft 2 I’m concerned I will not be able to fit into the glider. Loving the cabriolet version of Ka8 👍✈️😃
We also had a cabriolet K 8 B in our club, but sold it, because of deteriorating aircraft glue at the flap boxes and the work issues with that problem and all the others maintaing a vintage glider. This plane was amazing to fly in thermals (you could even feel the warm air approaching a thermal), full rudder with some aileron, and up it went. Also the easy going ailerons (minimal forces) were a pleasure. Before we converted it to a cabriolet, i flew my 50km (+ 40km back) in 4 hours ;) and had to land on a wheat field nearby a Harvester because i had to piss so hard, that i could hardly move the rudder anymore ;)
Winch launching is very popular in Europe (especially in Germany) because of low cost. In my club for students and club gliders = 3€ / Launch. For training start and landing you don´t need an expensive aero-tow to 600+ meters, or also the well known Rockefeller-Tow to 1000 Meters for aerobatics ;) With a winch launch you gain minimum about 300 Meters, depending on the winch (Diesel, V8 big block, Turbo Diesel, Electro ...), airfield (length of rope and wind direction), rope material (4,2 or 4,6mm steel or lightweighted AND strong fabric materials like Dyneema). Normally the cable length ("Schleppstrecke") is around 1000 Meters = 300m height with a double seater, with this K 8 here it is more like kite flying ("Drachensteigen") so we had about 100m additional with our K 8 B compared to our ASK21 double seater. But the winch driver needs more fine tuning with the throttle, especially at the beginning of the launch. There are extra long cables up to 3000 Meters, which allow launch heights at around 1500 Meters, which were (are?) used in glider aerobatics competitions. The Problem is, the lauch cable isn´t expected by other public aviation pilots in these altitudes. therefore a NOTAM has to be in place. ua-cam.com/video/zFKsjDIjmDg/v-deo.html unfortunately only the winch was filmed, 12 years ago with potato camera probably a TOST-04 Winch (TOST-03 and 04 very common in Germany) with Dyneema rope Chevy V8 big block 420hp ua-cam.com/video/hLntNUoVcCI/v-deo.html A complete winch Launch procedure, of a "traditional" Diesel winch with steel ropes (you can hear the splices clonging over the azimuth roller assembly) ua-cam.com/video/19lKmuRAFdU/v-deo.html ESW-2B Electric Glider Winch Demo And finally a german song from the Airfield Band of the Aero-Club Stölln, about theirs wish to Mama (most likely our Chancellor Angela Merkel) to buy them an electric winch with 2000 Meters rope, because Gasoline gets more expensive and they are favoring Atomic-Power ;) ua-cam.com/video/ImMhkU1zycE/v-deo.html The Buchanan Brothers - Atomic Power (1946) gosh youtube has it all, but i knew the song only by my old mixed-tape from my friend. With the low wing loading and low weight those old gliders can use weaker thermals and center them with very thight circles due to low speed. But yeah, the range especially with higher speeds is very limited.
Actually older gliders tend to climb more than modern gliders. I remember flying a Grunau Baby III (0.85 m/s minimum descent, theoretically). But you could thermal at 40km/h, so you would often outclimb the the Cirrus and the ASW20, to name a couple, just by staying in the better part of the thermal.
