Love the last point and it’s so true about drivers overthinking, I work nights aswell, been a HGV driver since 2016. I found listening to podcasts, especially crime podcasts ‘case file’ ‘crime junkie’, I find they give me other things to think about like solving the case as it goes along etc. And it stops me thinking about ‘other negative stuff’.
Keep up the good work and stuff the haters mate

Great video Deady. Interesting I’ve come into the industry to improve my mental health. I found my old job as a manager very stressful and demanding. I find driving much more relaxing but I didn’t realise how tiring it can be! I do sleep better since I’ve been driving so I’m seeing it as a positive move! For me the positives will always out way the negatives. Thanks for you honest opinions

Ive followed you right from your training videos and for one have learned shed loads, I don't care how long you've been doing the job, youve at least got the stones to say what you feel and to do out of your own time what you feel is right.

Great stuff Deady. That vlog deserves a lot of credit. I think you are bang on with what you say. I've been watching for some time now and felt compelled to comment. I'm retraining having been in the building trade for over 30 yrs. I can relate to having loads of time to 'overthink' and to getting home to the 'circus'. That isn't unique to professional driving but you made the point very well. Sadly, life can become skewed with too much thought.
But regarding the haters and to quote a famous saying. “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time".
They are human beings, that's the problem.
If you were a completely different person, the same people would still dislike you probably.
I've no doubt there are insular people in the industry as there are in others so credit to you because people should have the opportunity to talk at least and I think your idea of a group chat in some form
deserves all the support it can get because talking is the best healer.

Hi. It’s not illegal to undertake on a motorway, it’s strongly advised you don’t according to the Highway Code. You are allowed to undertake slow moving vehicles but shouldn’t weave from lane to lane. If you undertake and then go back into the lane you’ve just left, then it becomes a problem.

    • @deandurandt
      @deandurandt 3 роки тому +1

And before anyone starts, the Highway Code specifically uses the words ‘MUST’ and ‘MUST NOT’ to indicate legal requirements and nowhere in The Highway Code does it say a driver 'must not' overtake using an inside lane. In fact, Section 268 states, “Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake.” The use of 'do not' instead of 'must not' means it is technically legal to overtake in any lane except the hard shoulder.

I completely agree that in the job you have to be comfortable in your own company, but without distractions, music, podcasts etc then anything can come into your mind. Deady is one of the main reasons that I am going into the industry, along with Truck Driver Hayley, as they do give very honest opinions on the industry, the good and the bad. I would honestly say that the way you are so honest and open about your struggles really helps people understand that although the job can be easy, there are difficulties, especially as new/inexperienced drivers. But by being open, discussing the issues and getting help they can all be overcome. after all, it takes a community to make a village. Keep your chin up mate, you are truly an inspiration to many.

Great video Deady, I have been through tough times but I am always positive when leaving a comment on any of the vloggers that I follow, especially the trucking ones as they give their free time to edit videos for their audiences to watch and I appreciate that. Its sad that there seems to be so many haters out there and like you I hope this video makes them think about their life and whether they are happy or need someone to talk to about anything that bothers them. Hope you have a good week this week, stay safe

You are one of the few who inspired me go for becoming a driver. Thank you, sincerely for that! Now I work at Costco, class 1 and it s great! Before watching you and a few other people I thought all drivers are old grumpy men. It s not far from it but people like you make the difference! What I hate abort the HGV industry. Lack of professionalism. People who pull the pin first when disconnecting. People who are not considerate of others. People who when driving a scania drop their trailer with the mid axle up instead of in the down position. With the government announcing changes to the tests I unfortunately see the industry getting worse. We all need to do better and start acting like professionals.

Only just found your vlogs mate hopefully doing my class 1 in a couple of weeks so been a real gem to watch your progress and see where you’ve got yourself from those early days. I love that you’ve touched on the mental health subject, it’s not just the haulage industry though as you know, but this could be much more important in a safety aspect. If my heads not in the right place, then I know I can’t focus properly on what it is I’m doing, and I’m sure loads of people are the same. Ever been watching TV and though your watching, you miss 10 minutes of what happened and can’t remember parts etc? It’s a lapse in concentration, but people are unlikely to admit it if they drive professionally for fear of losing their job. There’s a great deal can be done to help everyone, not least of all blokes, with mental health issues. I’ve been doing a bit this year to promote it through my long distance cycling challenges. I lost my best mate through him taking his own life a few months ago, and he was the least likely you’d have expected it from - but he just didn’t know how to talk or who to talk to.
I’ve often thought there should be ‘Chat Rooms’ in truck stops etc where blokes can have a natter. Some people don’t naturally have confidence to start conversations, so people, ‘ambassadors’ if you like, who can would be great for those that don’t. My Dad was a trucker most of his life and I can relate to your comments about driving again after a week at work, I remember, like you, when he used to take me to Scotland with the big fridge. He used to drive Seddon Atkinsons and MAN’s then. I always wanted to be a trucker from an early age, but he told me to stay away as it cost him his marriage and family life. I remember his social circle being helped by the CB fraternity and remember some of the conversations, even now, 40 years later!! Amazing, bet no one uses them anymore, but again - could be great for helping people talk, virtually anonymously.
Keep up the good work mate, fight the good fight and forget the hate, it’s not worth it. Hopefully catch you on the road sometime.

You are a top top bloke. I'm just about to start my HGV driving journey, spurred on by your positivity, so keep that going. Regards, the head health, I think you're definitely on to something. When you do a job like driving where you are comfortable with it and find it realtively easy, then that allows more head space for thinking. Combine that with what we can be constantly fed from the media, relationship/home issues and the fact that the majority of men are either not aware of their head health, or just won't talk about it, then that shit builds up and keeps digging itself deeper and deeper because it's not allowed to be released. Most of us carry unwanted baggage of some kind and you're right, things need to be done and put in place to help each other, allow more and better communication and help people to become aware and accept that it's OK to feel this way and it's OK to talk. By talking, by becoming aware of yourself, your feelings and your thoughts, anyone can move over to a brighter and positive place. I'm with you on this one Deady and if you need any help setting anything up, give me a shout.

Big up Deady, I’m a London Bus driver (just about to do me class 2 theory) what you said about drivers being miserable is so true even in the bus Industry I’ve noticed that so many drivers are awkward & are very unhappy people, I’ve noticed that so many drivers outside of work have so few to no friends at all, many of the drivers come from broken marriages probably due to the long hours, so many of them live in bedsit’s or just rent a room in someone’s house, I was amazed when talking to people to find that so many drivers go home to nobody.
As bus drivers were not even aloud to listen to the radio to keep you slightly entertained & sane to keep you’re mind ticking over. There’s only so many times you can fantasize about winning the lottery & what you’d do with the cash or Marrying page 3 bird before it gets boring, then you start to think of all the bills you gotta pay or regrets in life or maybe you had around with the Mrs. and you didn’t sort out before you went to work, or thinking of going home to a empty flat.
At Christmas is the one time you can actually get a day off at my workplace if you want one because so many drivers are willing to work rather than sit at home on there jack jones…

Hi Deady, watched your whole series of videos as I'm considering getting into Class2 and Class1 and enjoyed every educating second of them.
You're open, honest and wear your heart on your sleeve and it comes across extremely well as an insight into the business from the strong 'based' person you are.
RE: You're head health. Todays media led society and lefitst/liberal thinking filled with hatred and bitterness is from a tiny minority of keyboard warriors parachuting in and regurgitating nonsense about which they have no clue. It's is only because they've been programed how to think and what to say with ZERO life experience in much which they spew from their sticky keyboards. They must tow the line of what their peers tell them or their friends do without the mearest hint of critical thought or working something out for themselves.
You work hard, you deserve it, and I think your views home life are pretty based too, IMHO you're on the correct path and I hope to cross it sometime in a HGV in the future and say hello.
Life's tough, scary and risky but that's what pursuing something meaningful is about, taking the easy way out by slapping an iPad in front of kids will not end well I totally agree.
Anyway, keep up the good work, IMHO you're and heart and head are in the right place, societys head isn't.
    N1, cheers for the videos.

Great video as usual Deady. Im a psv coach driver & middle lane hoggers do my head in. But you are legally allowed to "Undertake " it's called "making progress" providing you and the other vehicle are doing less than the speed limit of the road/motorway and you obviously stick to your lane after making the manoeuvre.

I agree. I think that there might be issues with the head issues. I think that hgv drivers and other people who work in industries which are so lonely should be able to see a mental health professional or companies should employee someone who can be about to listen to drivers and be at the end of a phone for if they are facing issues and need to talk about it

I'm not a driver but working in a warehouse I speak to quite few drivers and I've heard quite a few say that lorry driving is about the worst job in the world if you are having any kind of personal problems that are playing on your mind or depression of any kind, its not the sort of job that you can keep your mind occupied with because there's nothing to do and you get far too much time to think, deserted motorways in the dead of night with nothing but a white line to follow can almost be hypnotic and not so much the loneliness but the sheer lack for something to do is where the problem lies. I've heard it said that a manual gear box actually helped, back in the day when lorries were actually hard to drive you had to concentrate on keeping the wheels turning, it gave drivers something to do

    • @norm4260
      @norm4260 3 роки тому

Very true all of what you've said. By making trucks so easy to drive it's removed even more mental engagement. At least with a manual you had to plan your gears for an upcoming hill or descent. Even cruise control makes you feel removed from the driving experience.

Not slagging you fella i do quite like your videos i've watched quite a few, i think they are informative for new driver or drivers who are interested in coming to the industry, the thing is the pay rates have only just started to be quite reasonable there didn't use to be many driving jobs out there that paid a good hourly rate you had to put a lot of hours in and do nights out if wanted to get a half decent wage, its only in the last couple of years that some companies have realised the value of good drivers and are now paying good rates but still not that many of them about. I have worked in the industry for 37 years and now like you are working for an agency i have found if you get the right placement some of the agencies are paying good hourly rates which means you don't have to kill yourself putting lots of hours in. Fuck the haters young man just keep doing what your doing.

Lone working can cause anxiety and social issues. as you said, you have a lot of time to think and over-think things. If you have a run in or an altercation with someone on the road, at a drop, in your own company yards or even on the phone, you have all this time to sit and stew on it. It can lead to anger and frustration because you have no one to vent to.
Unfortunately, this means when you do get home, especially if you are tramping / working away, the first real amount of time you spend with anyone is when you are home with your family and these events can leave you irritable when you get there.
Humans are social animals and need the company and interaction of others to cope with day-to-day life. In the military and emergency services you can now get counseling for these things... why isnt there something for the Heavy Goods drivers? Like you said, a group that drivers can join to vent and be vented at, to discuss these things and try and maintain some sort of sanity is truly needed!

12 years of Hgv1 tramping, done Europe all over uk. Main reasons I hate tramping
    1. Rude customers
    2. Traffic planners with no experience with no Hgv license.
    3. Long hours
    4. Pressure and no understanding of a Hgv driver.
    5. Low wages
    6. Urine and poo in lay-bys.
    7. Showers dirty.
    8. The Heath and safety OTT
    9. No family and friends time.
    10. No personal time.
    11. Early starts 3/4am.
    12. Unit sharing.
    13. Lidl/ Aldi drive and self tip and load.
    14. Middle lane drivers.
    15. Cars brake checking
    16. Traffic Jams.
7/7/21 M6 I was stuck for 11.5hrs and done a 17 hr day because no where to park.
    17. Cpc
    18. Bosses not listening.
    19. Noise from fridges when parked up.
    20. Thieves nicking your diesel.
    21. £2k fine for driver each illegal immigrate on your truck, when you’ve secured your truck and trailer 100%.
    22. Dvsa
    23. Shall I go on.
    24. Industrial estates with double yellows.
    25. £30 to park in services smelling of p#*s.
    26. Rush rush rush.
    27. Your late we’ll tip you now.
    28. Your on time we’ll keep your here for hours.
    29. No more friendly drivers.
    30. Reasons I still do this job is because I have 2 kids and a wife, with a mortgage and bills to pay. And I have no education.
    31. I have forklift, adr, hiab license.
    32. Reason I can’t do day work is coz my monthly outgoing is £1300/£1500 a month.
    33. Work in a warehouse at £9ph at 48 hrs doesn’t cover bills.
So this is reality of a Hgv 1 driver no bull, straight up. Some drivers are lucky pending on where they live or where Hubs, rdc, are. But 90% of Hgv1 drivers go through this day in day out.
    34. So for new driver wanting to come in to this industry after 1/2 years the enjoyment will go and family will want you home. Mark my words work takes over.

Head Health : is so true.
I've been HGV driving since I was 21 ( 44 now ) I spent 7 years ( Until recently) in the petrol industry ( tankers ) and 3 years of those was as a union rep.
I was told by many drivers ( privately) that they suffered mentally due to shifts and hours etc. Some were drinking excessively just to get to sleep. A couple told me they had suicidal tendencies.
I also believe cameras in the cabs are a major problem to drivers head health.
I'm now in my second year of training to be a therapist / counsellor. A massive well done for touching on this subject.( I will subscribe now) Maybe, if everyone talks about it, then the industry might adapt.
The biggest problem I have found is getting drivers to open up, it's a macho environment.

I have heard back from Ask The Police re undertaking on the motorway. In short, there is no specific laws against undertaking on the left, so Yes you can undertake on the left on the motorway when there is a lane hogger, as long as you do not cross lanes to do so and/or exceed the speed limit. IE, travelling in the 2nd lane, then moving into the left land just to undertake. If you are travelling in the left lane, and there is a lane hogger under the speed limit that is not moving back to the left, then you are, by law, allowed to undertake, as long as done safely. Also as a note, it can also be an offence to drive unnecessarily slow on the roads. So be not undertaking, you could actually be more dangerous than undertaking.

First quick point on videos I've found that any of my happy videos have rubbish views but controversial stuff can go through the roof. Human nature I guess. Now then I count myself as one of the lucky ones as I have never had a job that I did not like, but then I think is that just me and my attitude to it. Started lorry driving March '84 and still love it, still love going to work even if I am in the north west most of the time now. I am known for being anti-social and now I wonder if it is partly the job that has made me this way. Don't get me wrong I am happy in life and have been with my wife for more than 37 years she the daughter of a lorry driver too. The best thing for me to combat any low feelings is to book the odd day off have a lie in spend the day with the wife and TALK. Most drivers I know confuse complaining with talking it is not the same thing. Keep the positivity going Deady lad it is not all about numbers. Enjoyed and liked the video. Going anywhere nice. After the suicide attempt, we got him out of the job and over the last 2 yrs he is a different man.
