This album is literally the equivalent of a disturbing thriller that's cinematically beautiful and you can't look away from and then have to think about it for the next few days
I've been following The Weeknd since late 2011. And when I tell you this man takes you on a rollercoaster, I mean that shit. Almost all of his music is tied together. It's his life story. He's telling you when he first dropped out of school, living homeless, chasing woman and of course doing drugs (Trilogy). Then he tells you about him getting money, becoming famous, being in a different world (touring), and of course women and drugs (Kissland). Then he gave us his inside edition of what mainstream and Hollywood is really like while still chasing women and drugs (Beauty Behind The Madness). Then being what the mainstream and Hollywood people want, to bring the numbers and money up. With more women and drugs (Starboy). Now he's showing us how mainstream has changed him but he just wants to be himself and he wants to give his OG fans what he hasn't since Kissland. At this point his women and drug chasing is getting old but that's all he knows (My Dear Melancholy). Now, After Hours, is a big rift between his old self to his new mainstream self. He's getting tired of the same shit but again that's all he knows. Almost as if he's crying out for it to stop but it just won't. It's a never ending cycle. Chapter 7 is a long ways away but I have a feeling it's going to be something totally different and I can't WAIT!!
this whole section is insightful yet concise and it gives me enough info to know his situation. i'm thinking that maybe he'll pull an Elton John in the sense that he'll drop some bad habits but continue to make great music
i like heartless because i dont think he genuinely believes what he’s talking about. i think the song represents that moment after a breakup where you’re bitter and angry, when you say “i didn’t need you anyway”, even if you know that’s not true
Same! Always got that impression, even in his earlier works he often talks about substance and girls and loneliness and after all these break ups apparently he's always been heartless? @@Mymyiauw yep my friend who I bought the ticket for to the concert. She got married so hopefully anyone else can go with me. So when 2022 comes it can start off right
I used to think 'Blinding Lights' about his addiction, like the line ' I can't sleep until I get your touch' literally translates into I smoke before sleeping and that the line ' you don't have to do much, you can turn me on by just a touch' translates into get a big puff and boom you are high, you don't need to do much.
I feel like "escape from LA" was about them being friends with benefits. That's why he was singing about how she's talking to him about all of the different men she's been with "pillow talk" ( trying to hurt him) but deep down he knows that he's engraved in her mind ( she still loves him ). So basically she didn't cheat on him just trying to provoke him .
Oh and also with the whole "flex " thing. I feel like he's saying that all of those things that he has he hasn't had the time to enjoy them and he doesn't really care about his house or pool because "this house is not a home without my baby". Basically his relaxing comes from his interactions with his fans because LA only accuses him of stuff and the paparazzi are following him not allowing him to have his own personal life.
@@naanbread4523 yea... and it will make it worse eventually. At first it's nice to escape, but inevitably, it will put you in a darker place than where you started bc now you have a habit, that messed up your brain and organ functions, so you can't critically think effectively and your confidence/humility are hard to find! It's best to not even start bc nobody becomes an addict in purpose, ppl think they have control and by the time they realize they don't, it's already ruined them... but it's never too late.... until it's too late!!
@@notcha8080 lmao yeah it’s nice to see him talk about something he enjoys for once, instead of somethin negative he needs to talk about but shouldn’t have to
Opinion: After Hours (title track) is the single of the year so far. The transition into the druggy beat, and how the beat reinforces the dark vibe of the lyrics, and the PRODUCTION, specifically after the beat drop, is amazing. The lyrics as well, is an impressive expulsion of this dark character and the person he thinks he actually is. It’s great.
@@pedrolins7449 I love Rina but I find it hard to make this my favourite track. However, I have listened to After Hours a lot more than her music, so I find myself appreciating XS a lot more.
idk bro i had an abusive ex years ago that stanned the weeknd so it made me feel too weird to listen to his music but maybe ill give it a try because of the fact D'Angelo almost never compliments anything and he did LOL
This album reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd's The Wall, which is a story-album that tells the depressing and drug-induced story of a man as he fails to cope with his life and his past. He's clearly flawed, which the songs show with his drug abuse, destructive mood swings, fascist hallucinations, etc. But you also hear the helpless sorrow in his voice and the numbness from his drug abuse as he doesn't really know how to cope. It adds to the insanity since its a mix of progressive rock and psychidellic rock. Long story short: The storytelling of a broken man descending into madness is one of my favorite album concepts. Go listen to the Wall. And also thank you D'Angelo for introducing and getting me into the Weeknd. I love this album so much
Dude I loved this album but you made me realize how well it describes a toxic, codependent relationship, especially when drugs are involved. I’m not mad at it, it’s fuckin accurate
I feel dumb because here I was listening to these songs on shuffle and not paying attention to the lyrics. You’ve completely blown my mind with your explanation 😂
This was hands down the best review of After Hours you literally solved the case on why he has blood on his face on the album cover everybody so was focused on the music and not the story
Almost it's obvious that Abel in every album tells us a story. Other artists just throw some songs and they call it a day. So i'm gonna pull up Gordon Ramsay and say that other artists album are bland and RAW
I myself am a huge fan of the weeknd and although I'd want to back him up usually, I completely agree with this. The messages going from each songs are almost like he's in denial and then comes back to loving Bella in a repeated cycle. I found the album was still amazing in my opinion, I knew once I heard the single 'after hours' before the album released that the production and vocals would be incredible and give off a different sound than starboy due to his realisation that with all that money, you can still be unsatisfied. With the weeknd's music though, I find myself more encapsulated by the sounds and vocals than the subject matter of the song, which made me love the alum even more, as some of the songs reminded me of other songs from every part of his discography. For example, if you listen to 'coming down', you can see it has a similar feel to 'repeat after me(interlude)' and the outro of 'until I bleed out' has very similar vocals to him on 'next', which is, in my opinion, the song where he seems the most emotional even whilst singing it. Overall, After hours would have to be my 3rd favorite album by him, with Trilogy being first and Kiss Land being second. He managed to convey a clear message to listeners and maybe even Bella with his emotions still not being silenced by the huge focus on perfect production and over-edited vocals, which is something you can't say about may artists. He really needs to get a handle on things in his personal life though, and either move on with the relationship or make sure that he can keep the promises that he says in his music and never let Bella go again if he gets into another relationship with her. Great album. Get off the drugs Abel.
@@muhammadfarian1775 yeah I thought he was sober aswell, especially from My Dear Melancholy, but he's definitely on drugs again now. He's referenced a lot of drug use in songs like snowchild and heartless, even in 'faith' he said "I've been sober for a year now it's time for me to go back to my old ways". He also did a few live streams in the past couple of days where you can see him lighting up.
@@ksslndxo6932 yeah i saw him on a blunt or a joint whatever but going back to coke? Well i guess we should have an amazing music. Again. Like the masterpiece of trilogy or kissland i hope
Bro the deluxe album has an ending for ya. I was really hoping you’d cover that here too. I think the whole album is just about his relationship with this girl. The ups and downs of a relationship. Until i bleed out might have been about him hurting himself but i think personally it was just him saying “i want to stop thinking about you because it hurts”. Because in the deluxe album, the song “Nothing Compares” talks about how no one can compare to her, “Missed You” is him finally admitting he misses her and Final Lullaby is him coming to terms with the fact that he cant make her stay in a relationship she doesnt want. So he sings a lullaby to put their relationship to a rest. Either way i love this album haha and im glad people are realizing how good it was.
The Weeknd in the song and The Weeknd in real life are the same person, in a reddit q/a he said everything in his music comes from personal experience.

Some suggestions for people who like storytelling albums : Trench by twenty one pilots Electra heart by marina Melodrama by Lorde Lemonade by Beyonce Humanz by Gorillaz Atlas:Enneagram by Sleeping at Last Added in the comments: Crybaby by Melanie Martinez K-12 by Melanie Martinez Blurryface by Twentyone pilots Igor by Tyler the creator Goblin by Tyler the Creator Danger days by My Chemical romance The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance Three cheers for sweet revenge by my chemical romance Blue Neighborhood by Troye Sivan Nothing Happens by Wallows Good Kid MAAD City by Kendrick Lamar Rare by Selena Gomez Kiss Land by the Weeknd The wall by pink floyd
Crybaby by Melanie Martinez is also a really good one. It’s someone about herself but mainly about a character. It has harsh and real world topics so it’s a little dark in some of the songs. Her newer album K-12 is also good, the film on her channel is great. The K-12 songs are named things related to school (Detention, teachers pet, recess, the principal, etc.) but are really about other things. Some people explain it in videos but I can easily explain all of them bc I do a lot of research. Crybaby is the same way, with the names of the songs being related to child/baby things (supply cup, training wheels, tag your it, Mrs. potato head, etc) but again are related to real life things and sorta dark things too. Sorry if I talked to long I just wanted to give an explanation/ preview on the albums if you listen to them. Have a good day ❤️
Yeah both Trench and Blurry face by Twenty One Pilots are great concept albums. Also, Danger Days and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge by My Chemical Romance are amazing storytelling albums
After hours is my favorite body of ART from mr.weekend also, the music 2020 scene is fucking thriving between this , Future Nostalgia, PND’s new project , and hopefully NORMANI as well as Rihanna dropping soon. I’m being over saturated
I have been a fan of Abel’s since 2012 when Trilogy dropped. To me, Trilogy always has and always will be his best album. I really love all of his albums, but there’s something about Trilogy that speaks to me more. It’s an album I always come back to and can listen to on repeat over and over again and never get sick of. Having said this, I’m not the biggest fan of After Hours, but I still love and will continue to support him and everything he does. I’ve been here since 2012, and I will continue to be here! Maybe this is an album that will grow on me the more I listen to it. Not sure. We’ll see. Thanks for this video, D’Angelo.
Old school Abel fans waddup 🤟🏽 It’s been a crazy ride with the trilogy tapes being holier than thou then receiving Kiss Land which for me is terrrible, then he got mainstream with a few bangers but no solid album until we got my dear melancholy which I believe was hiss return to RNB royalty, my friend doesn’t like MDM because he thinks its just crying for 25 minutes but I think it’s next best to trilogy. How would you peeps rank his work?
What if.....the 80s beats just reference the past story of this relationship? And so he reminisces about how he couldn't live without her, and now he's drugged and trying to forget about this past story.
when heartless came out, a guy i was hanging out with (and stupidly gave my virginity that meant a lot to me personally, not saying it’s a big thing everyone but for me it was) ghosted me because he thought i deserved someone better. i blasted that shit so hard
If you're looking for another cinematic story album, Childish Gambino's "Because The Internet" album is accompanied by a screenplay! Thanks for posting this.
Fun observation - there’s a underlining theme: On “the morning” Cali is the mission, on “tell your friends” two years later he says “Cali was the mission” like he’s made it and on the “snowchild” he says Cali was the mission but now a **** leaving.
I personally love "heartless" do damn much, definitely one of my favourite songs this year so far. It's the typical kinda funny thing of him singing about getting pu$$¥ with his angelic voice and then getting kinda deep and sad. The chorus sounds so longingly (idk if that's the right word) and sad while the beat slaps.
I like how The Weeknd lyrically explores these terrible, grotesque behaviors. And it's really cool to experience that (from a distance of course). Like, basically, I can I can examine my inner darkness through this album ☠️
After Honest did his review of the album I was DYING to hear your take. I went on a night drive just to get out of the house last night and listened to this album. It felt like I’d dissociated into an apocalyptic 80’s race car game and then the story just blossomed from there. It was incredible and haunting and hit home for me in a few instances. Enjoyed your review as always
Funny. I’ve only heard the songs “Blinding Lights” and “In Your Eyes” by themselves and love them. But it’s really cool hearing about this album as a full story, and how those songs create the narrative. It’s kinda like listening to “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd, thinking it’s just an anti-authority anthem but it adds to the narrative of a man who builds an emotional wall around himself throughout his life, but it hurts the people around him.
I think escape from LA was more just him being with a girl he can’t have. Maybe Selena Gomez because she was still in love with Justin Beiber “she’s all mine until he calls her line” but could also be about Bella because of the chromehearts reference
The 80s sounds were my favorite part of that album 🤣 after hours, save your tears, and in your eyes where my favorite tracks. I loved this album. And I really wonder if this isnt the retelling of he and bella's relationship. Toxic relationships are like a really dark intense movie. And about the time he was making this album he and bella were breaking up AGAIN 🤦♀️ and both had cheated! it's really sad, all that success and money and a ton of toxicity. Just my theory I have no idea whether that will stand any fact checking dont come for me lol I'm a basic fan not a diehard.
For a bit of context, Abel said in an interview that the song In Your Eyes was told from two different perspectives. It's about two people who are in love with each other but constantly keep fucking with each other. I think that adds a whole new element to the story. Also it seems to be a widely accepted theory that the entire album is a love letter to Bella Hadid. Personally I think she inspired big parts of the album but I don't think it's all about her.
I know it's like, almost a year later, but I haven't stopped listening to this album for months. Literally. It's. So. Good. And I love a dark storyline. This man is a genius. (Also mad because he didn't get any nominations.) I watched all of the music videos in sequence again and it's legit a movie.
I like musicians that don't always pretend to be the hero or the victim and can sing about their own faults. That's what we need more of. A good song with a relatable story is the ultimate catharsis when trying to forgive yourself. 🙂
You can clearly tell who listened to the album or not. Everybody is worrying about what this mans face look like now instead of worrying about his mentally 🤦🏾♀️
At first glance the artist name, the Weeknd, looks like it's just the word "weekend" minus the letter E. I just noticed that it also looks like the word "weakened". Especially when you take the missing E (or E's) into account while reading/pronouncing it. I might be slow on this, I've never looked up the actual meaning of the name I just wanted to point out what I saw while watching this video
“i’m bot endorsing anything that’s happening i’m just kind of enjoying what’s happening from a distance.” me the first time we were introduced to hisoka in hxh
His least popular (poorly titled) album Kiss Land deserves more credit. It was his first album where he included more intense, ethereal sounds which he emulates in his newer albums. Pretty is definitely one of the best (production wise) songs on the album
I come back to this video everytime I get myself together and decide clean my depression room mess. Its just nice to listen to and enjoy music in a positive way. I hope you make more videos for really good albums, just being passionate about them. Everytime you talked about a song, I stopped and listened to it then continued the video. It really brought me along.

I feel like this song also ties into the song “Secrets” from Starboy. That’s also about a girl that continuously lies to him.
Deslovespancakes I take it as a confession of him cheating, especially when he gets to the second part of the song. But I like your perspective too
but towards the end of the song he says “she’s all mine until he calls her line” so basically the girl is cheating on her partner with abel

It’s great.

TheLoveKam he is doing, well I’m going to see him next year in Manchester and I heard he’s singing some of his others songs from other albums
The hook to nothing compares hits so close to home.
Oooh and final lullaby...sums up the whole story perfectly
This album reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd's The Wall, which is a story-album that tells the depressing and drug-induced story of a man as he fails to cope with his life and his past.
He's clearly flawed, which the songs show with his drug abuse, destructive mood swings, fascist hallucinations, etc. But you also hear the helpless sorrow in his voice and the numbness from his drug abuse as he doesn't really know how to cope. It adds to the insanity since its a mix of progressive rock and psychidellic rock.
Long story short:
The storytelling of a broken man descending into madness is one of my favorite album concepts. Go listen to the Wall. And also thank you D'Angelo for introducing and getting me into the Weeknd. I love this album so much
Play it while watching The Wizard of Oz!! Trust me.......
@@kimmyball4961 i think that might be Dark Side of the Moon, but yes!

The ending to Escape from LA was top 3 sexiest songs the weeknd has ever made
I myself am a huge fan of the weeknd and although I'd want to back him up usually, I completely agree with this.
I thought he's been sober for a couple of years now
@@muhammadfarian1775 yeah I thought he was sober aswell, especially from My Dear Melancholy, but he's definitely on drugs again now. He's referenced a lot of drug use in songs like snowchild and heartless, even in 'faith' he said "I've been sober for a year now it's time for me to go back to my old ways". He also did a few live streams in the past couple of days where you can see him lighting up.
