When I was growing up all I had was a Game Gear. I didn't even try Genesis sonic tiil in my 20's in the 2000's when I got roms and an emulator. It was fun but for me I prefer the game gear ones.
My family struggled to afford the niceties during the 90's. Growing up in the UK, the master system was all we could afford. As such 8-bit sonic has a very special place in my heart.
Trivia: the 8-bit version of Sonic 2 for the Master System and the Game Gear came before 16-bit Sonic 2 for the Genesis/Mega Drive because in 8-bit Sonic 2, Tails made his debut as a non-playable character. 8-bit Sonic 2 is Sonic 2, Part 1 and 16-bit Sonic 2 is Sonic 2, Part 2.
If you really enjoyed Mean Bean Machine I recommend taking a dive in the Puyo Puyo series itself. You already know how to play, and navigating the menus in Japanese is mostly trial and error, with memorization when you figure everything out. Mean Bean machine is based off of the first game which is clunky in comparison to Puyo Puyo Tsu.
Karby64 You're right, I really should look into it. I think the only other one I've played was the version you could download to your GBA from Phantasy Star Online.
@@GeekCritique you have Puyo Puyo Tetris for PS4, PC and Switch, and Puyo Puyo 1 and 2 will come out for Switch too, I don't know if you did already, but some of the DS games have fan translations
Thanks for the video ! That 8bit music from Sonic 1 has brought back so many memories. I played through the first 3 on the Master System way before I got to experience the proper ones on the Mega Drive, so those are the nostalgic Sonic games for me. I think I'll spend this morning play master system games
Let it be known that I truly share your pain with the first boss in Sonic 2 GG. It wasn't until the GameCube port on Gems Collection, 15 years later that I finally got past that damn thing.
I remember beating it a time or two as a kid, but I still can't really beat it consistently. In fact, that footage may be the first time in the whole retrospective that I wasn't dying on purpose. Sonic 2 was a pack-in game, and that really put a damper on my excitement for my brand-new Game Gear.
My memories of that game are mainly failing at that boss, or occasionally, getting past it only to get a game over shortly afterwards. That game was a pain in the ass.
@@GeekCritique The only way I ever got past the first world was by getting the stage select secret, which is by hitting start at the EXACT frame that Tails blinks on the title screen. Which is insanely hard to pull off and requires many system restarts.
13:59 that movie is freaking amazing!!! I'm so happy you referenced it. And by "amazing", I mean like it's actually really bad, but extremely charming and funny. I love it
Sonic Triple Trouble was my first video game. In 2001 my dad gave me his old Game Gear and GB Color with Pokemon Gold. These two games are why RPGS and platformers are my main jam.
I grew up with both the megadrive and gamegear games (here in spain) and i think both are awesome. People always talk about the gg draining batteries, but i always had mine plug in via the power cord and no problems.
I had Mean Bean Machine on a Plug n Play with Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Flicky. I legit couldn't get past the second level to this day. The dude just keep dropping metal beans :(
I'm a major Sonic Blast apologist. Sure it would have sucked to get Blast instead of Triple Trouble or one of the console Sonic games for a birthday or rented for a weekend, but having the benefit of hindsight - and a healthy dose of patience for a game that looked out of date when it was new - I really enjoy it. I actually like it more than the Master System Sonic 2, as a decent portion of that game frustrates me to no end, while Blast remains endearing, if simple.
Thank you! I'm shooting for Friday for part 2. Footage is capped and the script is mostly ready, but it's still a lot of work. Not QUITE as long as this one though. I am wondering, since you asked, what are YOUR thoughts on Sonic Philes?
Honestly? I absolutely LOVED the videos! The first one was my introduction to UnknownArchive's works and although it lacks "zomg super professional clean as a whistle" editing I do believe that the video's author made many great points and the humor was spot-on! The second one - released a year later - was also really good, and if you haven't had a chance yet be sure to check out his Film Mockumentaries. I've shown them to SEVERAL of my friends and they love them!
Loving these videos mate, its nice hearing about something so informative about some obscure spin offs I'll never play.....about from Mean Bean Machine. Seriously though great video.
I now own a game gear and several games for it. And I will say that in my experience, it is not exactly the norm that game gear games are just zoomed in versions of master system games. Games like Wonderboy 3 and Vampire master of darkness actually redesign every level and the U.I to accomodate for the lower resolution, while Castle of Illusion runs in master system mode, causing it to have the same exact aspect ratio of the master system, but at a lower resolution making everything a little blurry. So it is quite unfortunate that the biggest sega franchise and the one that actually suffered the most from screen crunch, didn't actually attempted anything to accomodate for the lower resolution of the game gear, just zoomed in this fast paced platformer ala super mario bros deluxe.
my dad bought us a Master System well before I had an NES. still remember playing Jungle Hunt, Hang On, Great Football, and My Hero. I still have the System in a box in my attic.
Loved this man! Game Gear was my first "console" (if you can call it that) first medium for playing games that I got when I was 5 or 6 for Christmas. With it came Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic Chaos. Sonic 1 was a great all around game and with some work I beat it and enjoyed it. Sonic Chaos was my favorite game for a long time. I played it all the time and loved beating it. Sonic 2...Sonic freakin 2. That was so hard for 5,6,7,8 year old me. I can't tell you how long it took to get passed the first boss. After a few years I was able to get to Scrambled Egg every now and then and then die. Didn't beat the game until 3 years ago as a Freshman in college. I love your videos especially Sonic since it was such a big part of my childhood. Keep em coming.
You have no idea how refreshing to see someone who agrees with me that Sonic 1 is my favorite in the 8bit series, though I didn't think Sonic Blast to be that bad, I agree that Sonic Labyrinth didn't need to exists and I'm a huge Sonic fan who had very low standards as a kid.
Wow, this was thorough. I had no idea most of these games even existed. I figured this would just be Spinball, 3D Blast, and the 8-bit games. The only 8-bit Sonic game I played as a child was Triple Trouble. I'd really like to see a Genesis port of that (and, to a lesser extent, the other 8-bit games). Maybe with a larger color palette and higher resolution, even Sonic Blast wouldn't be so bad.
Haha, I already knew about all of these, and even I was surprised when I actually counted up how many games I'd need to cover. Triple Trouble would've been awesome on 16-bit...
Ohh, the Master System, I love that console! We only had two games, a racing one (with motorcycles I think) and the shooting one you showed at 12:20 and it was so addictive! I remember it fondly and I think I still have the console and one control (but that's it, no cables, no cartridges, nothing) I'm from Mexico, but it is as you said, nobody else I've ever met knows about the console, here it was nintendo (and atari) or nothing.
Been a while since I watched these! And I remembered there used to be a secret annotation that led to a short discussion about Bridge Zone, positioned right as you brought it up in this video. Unfortunately, now that annotations are dead (thanks Google!), there's no way to actually SEE said discussion...
That mean bean machine and sonic the hedgehog 2 for gamegear were my first two handheld games. I couldn't believe that I couldnt get past that first boss bug for the longest time and then sometimes pulling the cartridge out while it was still on only to see the lower extension of the boss that you wouldnt normally see, it was a neat find. I could never however get past Green hill zone iirc, that was the flatline for me.
Just about all of the tracks I've used across this series and from NicoCW's channel, and the link to that is in the description. If you'd like a list of this video specifically since these tracks are more obscure, I can do that when I get back to my computer.

Oh my God, that stupid Sonic 2 on Game Gear, and that first boss. I thought I just sucked at games, I'm glad someone else thought the difficulty was just insane.
Sonic 2 was the only game I saw on Game Gear when I was a kid. My aunt pretty much said, "Here, try this." And it was horrible! That first boss is forever burnt into my head, along with the background music of the first level.
Actually came across a Segasonic arcade machine once, on the ferry to the Isle of Wight, at the start of a family holiday back in the '90s at some point. Can't remember if I actually played it at all...
That Sonic voice is as silly as that idol from that Moses game on the CDI..."I am an idol worshipped by many! There is someone downstairs who worships me!" 😂
I remember being ticked finding out there was a version of 8-bit Sonic 2 with better screen size. That first boss on Game Gear was hell for kid me, and years later I’m like “Are you kidding me? No! Everyone should have to suffer!”
It's composed by Yuzo Koshiro, after all. You can always expect great stuff to come out of the man who composed the Streets Of Rage and ActRaiser soundtracks!
It may be on some of the footage in part 2, but it won't happen again. For my personal gameplay, I tend to prefer them. But I know not everyone does, and UA-cam/MP4 compression only exacerbates the problem, so I like to go for accuracy when I cap footage for the channel. Unfortunately, I was roughly halfway through capturing footage for this series when I realized I'd forgotten to shut it off.
I'm an American gamer, and in some ways, I favor the slower platforming elements found in CD and Sonic 1 8 Bit than I do the faster games. Then again, I also played my Sonic games next to my shareware DOS platformers at that time, so I'd be doing Sonic 1 Genesis one second and Jill of the Jungle or Crystal Caves the next. Might be why. Not that I don't enjoy Sonic's speed when it's done well. I still hate the Wave Ocean boss, and Sonic Advance 2, while fun, and I love some of the stages like Music Plant, I hated the bosses. Who thought the running bosses were a good idea? After a while, I just gave up on ever getting all the Chaos Emeralds and forgot all about it, in lieu of Sonic Battle. That's still an oddball little Sonic game, but it was a fun way for me to pass many an hour, even if my builds were fairly predictable, and the fighting mechanics okay. But when I did finally play Sonic 1 on the Master System, I got a kick out of it. I really enjoyed the platforming mechanics, and I came away really liking Jungle Zone and Bridge Zone (of course.) It gave me respect for how some of the 8 bit releases of Genesis games were given a lot of thought and consideration for the conversions. Things like Ristar, and Shining Force. I thought both were treated fairly well. Sonic 2 8 Bit was okay, and yes, I once tried to play it on Game Gear. I beat it, with all emeralds, and am never going back to it again.
That first boss in sonic 2 has haunted me since I was a kid. I would use level select and beat the final boss. It was always odd to me that I could beat the last boss but not the first boss. I completely forgot the master system would have a wider resolution for the game, maybe now I can beat it.
I absolutely love Sonic 1 on the Master System. Such an excellent little platformer with great music. 8-bit Sonic 2 can bite me though. Chaos was way too ridiculously short and easy for my taste with EXTREMELY short levels. Triple Trouble improves on the formula immensely. I still think Sonic 1 by Ancient is the best 8-bit Sonic game but Triple Trouble did the best job of emulating the Genesis experience. Sonic Blast doesn't deserve to exist.
The first two 8-bit Sonic platformers were the only Sonic games I got to play as a kid. It took me over half a decade to beat them. Our Game Gear had to have it's power cord replaced at least once long before then. I remember the third act of Green Hills Zone in the second having some rather stupid level design. When I have to memorize minute background cloud details to avoid plummeting into lethal spike pits, something has gone wrong. 12:50 EDIT: RIGHT ON THE FUCKING NOSE. THIS WAS WHY!
Here's something for the Bridge Zone video. It makes Speedrunning the game boring. SMS Sonics are my baes, but I would never prefer their pacing over the originals. I think they do their thing pretty well. Never cleared Triple Trouble do to being annoying as fuck to find the emeralds. And Tails Adventure is amazing but it also gets tedious fast.
Somehow my dad accidentally got the Master System version of Sonic 1 on the Wii virtual console instead of the Genesis version. To this day, I've still never played any of the Genesis games.
Televisions in Europe also ran on 50hz, instead of the 60 we had in the U.S. so that also may support the reasoning for Europe’s enjoyment over the more slower paced platforming sonic games
Ha! Pansy! I beat Sonic 2 on the Game Gear with all the emeralds! No seriously apparently that gets you into the Salty Spitoon in the gaming community up there with beating Battletoads without a Game Genie.
i actually played the sonic patrol car in the arcades around early 2000's, both the japanese and english version (probably an asian release). i remember the english voice in the game was kinda deep, unlike what anybody would imagine sonic's voice to be like. i remember playing it, bumping the cars (i was around 6 back then) and hearing sonic go WHUUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOAHHH there are also other games i played similar to this, there's the wakuwaku marin, and then there's a certain game where a cat is the main star and it walks along the street, and then there's a dog which acts like the boss and you defeat it by shouting into the microphone
as a murican I like doing both the fast and the slow, Just whichever one I feel like doing, sometimes I just slow down to go explore during adhd moments, I like games where I can both take it slow and go fast with high skill ceilings, I like that even exploring can be a skill spectacle, part of why I dont mind marble zone, idk about labrynth zone tho cuz I never got that far due to hardly playing sonic 1, I tend to lean on 2, 3, cd and mania
One thing I should mention... while it is MOSTLY true for several games that they were never released in the US, that doesn't count the Mega and Gems Collections. Between those, one would possess every last Sonic Game Gear game and then some! Still no Knux Chaotix or SegaSonic ports though...
even kirby's avalanche and dr robotnik's mean bean machine have a original game from 1992 when kirby's dreamland was out in 1992, it was called!!! puyo puyo.
I was introduced to Sonic through a knockoff Master System here in Brazil, and I do prefer slower gameplay. I think this is why I didn't mind Unleashed too much, and I played the PS2 version!
god, that boss at the end of under ground zone, at least I now understand why I could never beat him. this did remind me of a video game magazine my mom bought me one time not long after I got sonic 2 on game gear. it was a gamepro (I think??) and on one of the pages it said there was a code to unlock the stage select on sonic 2. finally, I thought, I could make it past that stupid boss and see what the rest of the game was like. it said the code was in a different section of the magazine on page whatever, but going to that page yielded no codes for anything. I searched the magazine, and scoured the part of the magazine that actually had codes, but couldn't find this code for sonic 2. seriously, I was beginning to think it was hidden in one of the margins to make it feel more rewarding to find, but not even my parents could find it. a while later I tried looking again (I decided to try sonic 2 again and I was a desperate child). after scrutinizing the magazine even further it turns out that blurb appeared in a preview for a different spinoff magazine. gamepro basically took the first few pages out of the first issue of this new magazine and just kinda put them into a issue of their main magazine. the page listed was for a completely different magazine that probably went out of print months ago. I always thought it was a mistake, but now I'm 80% certain they did it on purpose, though you think they'd edit for that sort of thing. anyway I never did look up the stage select code after the internet became available to me, maybe I should actually try and look for it.
"What does Sonic need with a scrolling stage?" *Flash forward to Sonic Forces* I hate it/love it when fans unwittingly predict stupid decisions that Sonic Team will make in the future.
Me too! The gum was WEIRD, but the cards were fun, and it was just neat to have a tiny replica Game Gear that didn't leech up every battery in the house.
I remember when I got it - visiting my brother at summer camp. I also recall shoving all the gum in my mouth at once, to the displeasure of my parents... hahaha... Never did have a Game Gear myself, sadly ... until years later - picked one up at a flea market along with Sonic 2 and Triple Trouble - sadly, one of the transistors went bad, and the screen - as a result - draws only a throwup of pixels on the screen. ~____~ Gotta get around to fixing it.
Yeah, that's sadly a very common problem with Game Gears. But even when they were brand new, there was something very noticeably distinct about them. Like, I was playing one of the Game Gear games on Sonic Adventure DX the other day, and as the SEGA logo faded in, it reminded me of how the handheld would start buzzing when the screen lit up (probably poor shielding), and how it just had this faint electrical smell while in operation. Despite how it sounds though, I don't really consider those detriments. It's more just a result of the tech they were working with at the time. And it says a lot that all these years later, I remember that so specifically.

As a kid I never got a mega drive all’s I had was the master system till the ps1 so I love the 8bit sonics, it’s all I had
Let's not forget that the Game Gear even had a Master System adapter to play Master System games on the Game Gear, that's how similar they were.
oooh, I really like unknownarchive. Didn't realise he'd done a sonic retrospective too! :)
I remember being ticked finding out there was a version of 8-bit Sonic 2 with better screen size. That first boss on Game Gear was hell for kid me, and years later I’m like “Are you kidding me? No! Everyone should have to suffer!”
Sonic 1 GG has the best Sonic GG soundtrack. I really like all but about two song.
It's composed by Yuzo Koshiro, after all. You can always expect great stuff to come out of the man who composed the Streets Of Rage and ActRaiser soundtracks!
Most of the other Sonic GG soundtracks are very busy. They're kinda like free-form jazz.
Please, no more filters on your game footage, it makes them look like garbage.
The Geek Critique Sorry, I probably overreacted. I liked your video! Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Sonic Chaos was probably my favorite Master System Sonic game of the 4.
Loved the OVA reference lol strange indeed
I really enjoyed the platforming mechanics, and I came away really liking Jungle Zone and Bridge Zone (of course.)
It gave me respect for how some of the 8 bit releases of Genesis games were given a lot of thought and consideration for the conversions. Things like Ristar, and Shining Force. I thought both were treated fairly well.
Sonic 2 8 Bit was okay, and yes, I once tried to play it on Game Gear. I beat it, with all emeralds, and am never going back to it again.
I want them too
Triple Trouble was my first Sonic game.
That first boss in sonic 2 has haunted me since I was a kid. I would use level select and beat the final boss. It was always odd to me that I could beat the last boss but not the first boss. I completely forgot the master system would have a wider resolution for the game, maybe now I can beat it.
Sonic Drift was the source of inspiration for the third movie in the F&F franchise: Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift.
THIS WAS WHY!
i wish they would have made the sonic sat am game. there's a short video out there. it looked different. but inna good way.
4:03 - this is probably what the original cgi sonic sounded like xD
4:55 Is that Sonic Drift Labyrinth and Scrap Brain slander I hear
Sonic 2 master System was realesed a few months before the Genesis version. Which probably explains why the spindash was absent.
Ray the Flying Squirrel will be coming to Sonic Mania Plus.
Labyrinth Zone music for Sonic Labyrinth?
nice.
I also never got past the first boss in Sonic 2 for the GameGear
I beat sonic spinball when I was 6. It was the first game I ever beat.
I also remember that strange ancient place lost to time known as K-mart
Ha! Pansy! I beat Sonic 2 on the Game Gear with all the emeralds! No seriously apparently that gets you into the Salty Spitoon in the gaming community up there with beating Battletoads without a Game Genie.
i actually played the sonic patrol car in the arcades around early 2000's, both the japanese and english version (probably an asian release). i remember the english voice in the game was kinda deep, unlike what anybody would imagine sonic's voice to be like. i remember playing it, bumping the cars (i was around 6 back then) and hearing sonic go WHUUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOAHHH
there are also other games i played similar to this, there's the wakuwaku marin, and then there's a certain game where a cat is the main star and it walks along the street, and then there's a dog which acts like the boss and you defeat it by shouting into the microphone
as a murican I like doing both the fast and the slow, Just whichever one I feel like doing, sometimes I just slow down to go explore during adhd moments, I like games where I can both take it slow and go fast with high skill ceilings, I like that even exploring can be a skill spectacle, part of why I dont mind marble zone, idk about labrynth zone tho cuz I never got that far due to hardly playing sonic 1, I tend to lean on 2, 3, cd and mania
Sonic Blast is awesome
Since youtube got rid of annotations, you might want to link the bridge zone video in the description. =w=
One thing I should mention... while it is MOSTLY true for several games that they were never released in the US, that doesn't count the Mega and Gems Collections. Between those, one would possess every last Sonic Game Gear game and then some! Still no Knux Chaotix or SegaSonic ports though...
dude! that arcade game looks interesting.
Does anyone actually have a link to that Bridge Zone video?
2:38 the other way around. Or is it. Kirby and sonic 1991
In the 90's it was 4 games per year, now it's one game per 4 years.
Ah mean bean machine. The game that brought me my ex who i was dating at the time and our close friend actually had to be a team to bear.
Imagine if they used the School House voice for every Sonic game.
Maybe sonic labyrinth is slow because labyrinth zone from from sonic 1 is slow. The secrets out
He also means 8 bit series so the sonic series in general
even kirby's avalanche and dr robotnik's mean bean machine have a original game from 1992 when kirby's dreamland was out in 1992, it was called!!! puyo puyo.
14:00 I really hope I'm not the only one who got that reference, lol
Well I was going to watch that Running on Empty series, but it looks like the channel was deleted due to copyright infringement lol
I was introduced to Sonic through a knockoff Master System here in Brazil, and I do prefer slower gameplay. I think this is why I didn't mind Unleashed too much, and I played the PS2 version!
The creator(s) of Sonicphiles had his account terminated.
I actually had a copy of Sonic's Schoolhouse as a kid. That game is a fucking drug trip and creeped me out even as a kid.
First time I played Sonic Blast it was on a ROM. I actually thought it was a bootleg. I was shocked when it turned up in Sonic Mega Collection.
I LOVE the 8-bit version of Sonic 1. I think I like it better than the Genesis version of Sonic 1.
god, that boss at the end of under ground zone, at least I now understand why I could never beat him.
this did remind me of a video game magazine my mom bought me one time not long after I got sonic 2 on game gear. it was a gamepro (I think??) and on one of the pages it said there was a code to unlock the stage select on sonic 2. finally, I thought, I could make it past that stupid boss and see what the rest of the game was like. it said the code was in a different section of the magazine on page whatever, but going to that page yielded no codes for anything.
"What does Sonic need with a scrolling stage?"
*Flash forward to Sonic Forces*
I hate it/love it when fans unwittingly predict stupid decisions that Sonic Team will make in the future.
5:47 holy shit, I used to actually have that gum thing shaped like the Game Gear.
Me too! The gum was WEIRD, but the cards were fun, and it was just neat to have a tiny replica Game Gear that didn't leech up every battery in the house.
I remember when I got it - visiting my brother at summer camp. I also recall shoving all the gum in my mouth at once, to the displeasure of my parents... hahaha...
Never did have a Game Gear myself, sadly ... until years later - picked
one up at a flea market along with Sonic 2 and Triple Trouble - sadly,
one of the transistors went bad, and the screen - as a result - draws
only a throwup of pixels on the screen. ~____~ Gotta get around to
fixing it.
2:57 but werent you used to dying a lot in regular sonic?
Triple trouble looks like a precursor to sonic advance
Can anyone tell me the name of the song used on the outro?
