Thank God Joe was able to repair the slide. I would’ve had to call for help or take the trailer in for repair and I’m sure it would’ve been far more expensive than what Joe spent to do it himself. Felt so bad that you guys got sick and was worried about Joe’s back. He needs to get some muscle relaxers to keep on hand in the event that ever happens again, I suffered a back injury a couple years ago putting my ebike back on the rack on my trailer. Ended up in the emergency room long story short now I have to really be careful with my back. I so enjoyed the video. Alaska looks so beautiful. It’s been on my to do list for many years even before I went full-time RV living. ❤ Thanks
Look forward to seeing you in the comments each week. 🙂 You're always so encouraging. I'm pretty sure my back is from 30 some years of bad sitting posture and poor lifting techniques. It tends to go out without me about once a year (last time was on a golf course in Michigan when I didn't warm up enough). I hear you on the repairs. The thing with this rig is they literally don't make the parts for this slide anymore. When it broke in Texas I looked all over for a new gear and they don't make that kind...anywhere. 👀 Keeps me limited on finding repair people that won't pitch me a whole new slide mechanism. -J
As a retired machinist moldmaker for 42 years in the Glass Buis. I am impressed with your fix on the slide. I've been watching the adventure from the view of the couple you guys are traveling with. We own a Brinkley Z and had it to Alaska last summer. Awesome trip. Travel safe and check out the music at Burlington Bill on you tube. Awesome video of a Grizzly bear at Kluane Lake and waterfalls near Valdez. Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on you tube.
Awesome! I'll be sure to check that out! We've seen far fewer bears than we expected so far (but hoping a trip to the ever popular Brooks Falls changes that tomorrow!) -J
@@OpenRoading We saw lots of Grizzly bears in Alaska and black bears all through Alaska and Canada! Is the big Sam's run paying off? Take care, have some fun and can't wait to see what you guys are up to next week.
Costco prices were pretty similar to lower 48 - most things were just slightly more expensive. The great Sams trip has absolutely paid off because we weren't near this costco for months after we did the stock up. 🙂 I do have to ask....what's your favorite bird? 😁 -J

Kalyn rocks behind the wheel. She just hates it. 😁 You are 100% right - it DOES suck to get sick on vacation! This isn't a big deal - but I do want to clarify that we're not actually on vacation. It can seem that way because of the video content but between producing these videos, Kalyn's business, and freelance work we put in full time work hours each week! We just are lucky to be able to do it from our RV on the road which we do not take for granted. -J
Something I'm learning is that if the tools are small projects can be a way to build your toolset. I didn't have the vice to the dremmel - so I picked them up and added them to the collection. 😁 -J
You two never cease to amaze me! ❤ Ah the ups and downs of being on the road in Alaska! Makes me only want to cruise there…😂😂😂 Not true! I do want to travel by camper van there one summer, but I will take my Joe and Kalyn lessons with me. And many tissues and trash bags in case of flu. 😆🥰 Glad you two are feeling better.😊
Since I have arthritis in my lower back, I know exactly how you feel dealing with back pain. Hopefully the pain didn’t last long and you were able to enjoy your travels through Alaska.
I would recommend getting a cordless impact wrench, since you are on the road with so many tires. After working on cars all my life without one, I have to say it is the best tool I ever bought. You'll still need a torque wrench putting the nuts back on, but the impact will save so much time and effort, and could save your life if stuck in a dangerous spot. I have the Earthquake from Harbor Freight, and it is amazing! 😀
This is why I travel with Craig.... to borrow his tools. 😁 A kind person gave me a Dewalt Impact gun but I believe I purchased the one that's not high toque (screw bit attachements as opposed to the 1/2") so I don't think I can use it on the tires. But I'm slowly building my cordless tool kit and this one has already been super helpful in helping me fix some stuff around the RV! But it is good exercise to do these things by hand too. 😂 -J
I edit the videos so if that happens...you won't see it...the videos will just stop. 😂 In a future video you will see me use a jack stand (I think....I know we used it...I just can't remember if we showed it being used.....). -J

i agree with another commenter about Aleve, however I take the pill form. Generic is Naproxen Sodium. Walgreens has a heating pad sized ice pack which is great for applying cold to the back. You can alternate with Tylenol. If you take the Aleve make sure you take with food!!! I'm a veteran of 4 back surgeries so trust me, I know what I am talking about. Love the insert pictures of Trinity. She hit the jackpot with you guys!
Thanks for the tips! I did take Naproxen. It helped a bit for me but the only thing that got me to the end of it all was just time and movement. I've found that walks and such are good and long periods of no movement cause it to stiffen up more. Just glad it's over for now. -J

Back pain is awful. My deepest sympathy to you J. When you are good again, seriously think about giving Yoga a try for your back. It can work wonders. Specifically, iyengar yoga. It focuses on proper alignment and strength.
Get a breaker bar, the 18" x shaped one. They are quickly spun on and off, and give you the best options, including two people or standing on one arm of it. Lasts 100+ years.
About those screws, use a dab of glue, or nail polish in a pinch, to keep them from backing out from vibration. But not too much so they never come out.
If you are still in the area, visit the reindeer farm in Palmer AK. You will get up close to some very large alaskan animals. Yes people die on the mudflats every year by walking on them and getting stuck in the mud.
Trinity clearly said "they didn't even ask if I would drive"! Kudos on the fix! I would have been trying bringing it in/out about 15 times before I trusted myself. I got 10 years on you, and frequently pick up stuff up to 150 pounds, Tylenol without a doubt, short term, chiropractor and massage if three days Tylenol didn't work. If those chocolate chip banana muffins were included in the postcard plan, I would pay a fortune!
haha - depending on the size of the fortune things could be arranged. 😂 As to the slide - I have the opposite thought... I assume my fix is good for 100 sets of pulling in and out....so I don't want to waste 15 of them on tests. LOL -J

BIG 👍 for the fix!
I couldn't see the head of the bolt, but using a higher grade bolt may ensure longevity for the cure.
Good work with the Dremel!!
Ingenuity is the mother of repairing.
Keep RVing 👋
👽
They were grade 8 bolts! Only the best for this rig. 😁 -J
I'm enjoying watching the adventures. Glad you are all feeling better. FYI as a nurse practitioner...it's not flu season however COVID has spiked...highly possible you all had COVID especially since it spread so easily. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Happy travels!
It sure is possible. It could have been any number of things I’m sure. I had not gotten a lot of sleep over several days so I’m pretty sure my immune system was down for the count and a shopping cart handle could’ve taken me out. 😂 -J
Thank you for taking us alone it's a fantastic trip❤
Glad you enjoyed it! -J
When I was still working (been about 15 years now) I lifted a lot of heavy iron onto the lathe and mill and my back would act up. Now retired anytime I stress my back (like when you fixed the slide or changed the tire) I take a couple Naproxen (Aleve). It really helps. I'm almost 74 and I don't take any prescription medicine. Travel safe.
@@burlingtonbill4687 Thanks so much! I took some generic Naproxen but I think i may have been too late on the game with it. Should have taken it a lot earlier. -J
Haven't had internet, but we got Starlink today and WhooHoo! Internet AND an Open Roading video! Made my night. LOL I'm so sorry you got sick, we unfortunately know how you feel. We arrived to start our 4 month RV adventure and immediately got sick... 10 days completely lost. The RV NEVER seemed smaller, we never left except to get the dogs out for short walks. I really mean it when I say I feel your pain. Glad to see you both feeling better and moving forward! The biggest kudos to Joseph!! I'm SUPER impressed with your repair skills!! I love the puffins! They're my second fav bird. I'd love to see them in the wild but I learned unless nesting they live way out in the open ocean. They're cute, but fierce little buggers. How were the prices at Costco? Is the big Sam's run paying off? Take care, have some fun and can't wait to see what you guys are up to next week.
Costco prices were pretty similar to lower 48 - most things were just slightly more expensive. The great Sams trip has absolutely paid off because we weren't near this costco for months after we did the stock up. 🙂
I do have to ask....what's your favorite bird? 😁 -J
@@OpenRoading Penguins!!🐧🐧🐧
Got my postcard today, ty very much. Alaska to Germany via USPS took 26 days. Look forward to more vids.
Holy cats! That’s faster than I expected! -J
lol at Trinity trying to catch a bug @18:55.
We regretted not getting gas where y'all did. We were running on fumes by the time we got to Cooper's Landing after a detour to Hope (which didn't give us much hope of getting to the next gas statjon w/o running dry) 😂
Your newsletter has me super excited - y'all are in one of the most beautiful areas in Alaska imho.
We're loving this area. It's been pretty foggy but the next couple of days are supposed to be really sunny so we are going to try our best to take full advantage! -J
Sorry, Joseph, I'm definitely Team Kalyn on the muffins! However, I'm Team Joseph when it comes to the jelly on a PB&J. LOL! Great video! Glad y'all are feeling better!
Very diplomatic of you. 😁 Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy our videos and yes, it feels so good to feel good again! -J
I’m sorry you guys were dealing with so much sickness! Here’s to healthy and fun days ahead!
Thank you. No worries though. It happens! Just get through it and move on! 🙂
@@OpenRoading I’m also so impressed with you both driving your rig! J through sickness and back pain and K for an hour on unfamiliar roads 🤩 it’s been such a joy to live vicariously through your adventuring! We love roadtripping with our 5 kids, but just in our van. Invariably, as the “relief” driver, I always seem to (and despite all best efforts) get the shift with crazy weather or road conditions 🤪 it’s hilarious, but also not my favorite 🫣
@@MJPH5 Oh boy! That's gotta be fun to navigate with the fun mayhem that children can also bring! We literally turn off our radio when it starts raining in order to concentrate more. LOL -J
@@OpenRoading lol! I’ve thought about getting a custom “please be patient - toddler backseat driver” sticker made for our van 😆
Yes back issues here also, L5S1 fused. And last episode was 3 weeks down. I have a H wave device and it works wonders. Also use gels lubroxum some very good stuff.
Thanks for the recs! -J
slide out repair, extremely impressed
Thanks! -J
Great job on the slide repair!!!
Thank you! -J
I’m enjoying your trip vicariously and watching your viewership rise. Hooray! Well deserved.
We so appreciate that! We're currently pretty exhausted from our schedule (not complaining! Just reality.) and getting encouragement like this is so so helpful to keep the engines moving! -J
It sucks to come down with a cold while on vacation, but fingers crossed that you’re all set for the rest of your trip!
Kalynn handled the driving like a pro and I was so happy to see you got through the other side!
Looking forward to next week!
Kalyn rocks behind the wheel. She just hates it. 😁
You are 100% right - it DOES suck to get sick on vacation! -J
Great job fixing the slide. $1,000 is highway robbery. I'm glad you had the tools to tackle the project and save all that money. Awesome!
Thank you! We'll cover a lot of this later but smaller is better in Alaska! -J
Since I have arthritis in my lower back, I know exactly how you feel dealing with back pain. Hopefully the pain didn’t last long and you were able to enjoy your travels through Alaska.
Great viedo,i watch Craig an Victorias viedos all the time,so you guys to,enjoy rest of trip, safe travels
Thanks for stopping by! -J
I agree completely. Something other than a bottle jack, and a couple of jack stands would be a good idea too. Hate to see Joe get crushed.
@@AlmightyG1969 for sure that would be helpful! 😀
This is why I travel with Craig.... to borrow his tools. 😁
A kind person gave me a Dewalt Impact gun but I believe I purchased the one that's not high toque (screw bit attachements as opposed to the 1/2") so I don't think I can use it on the tires.
6:57 specially with those DIRTY HANDA 😂😂
You know that Kalyn’s eyes were watching those hands from the moment I came in the door. 😂 -J
I started following your channel not too long ago and you two have become my favorites! Just the way you two blend is so refreshing and watching you adopt Trinity and working to save for your travels. I will continue to watch your channel and hope you guys are having a great time on this Alaskan adventure of a lifetime. Best wishes to the both of you.
I believe the term “bush fix” is from Alaskans so your awesome repair is “at home”. STRONG WORK!!
Bush fix! I like it. -J
Hey, another great video,
Glad to see you both are feeling better,
Joseph is such a good fix it man ,
The money you save, good on you both.
Thanks for keeping it real,

Thanks so much for the kind comment! We're both so happy that that week is behind us. No fun being sick and while Kalyn was sick I wasn't a big help because of my back. Sigh.... -J
Very impressive slide repair... yes 👏
Thank you! -J
The aerial drone footage was incredible.
Well done Joe! With all these skills u are acquiring fixing ur own rv, u could start ur own repair business! Thanks for bringing us along on ur journey!
Post card came in the mail yesterday! THANK YOU!
Yay! We're almost through the first batch....we're gonna have to put the pedal to the metal to write out the second cards! 😂 -J
@@OpenRoading Pace yourself- don't want to get hand cramps! I heard you were doing several hundred and just the thought made my hands hurt lol.
@@SmokyOwl I think 372 was the total of cards that needed to be written. I had really good intentions of doing 3-4 a day...it has turned into marathon sessions ever several days. 😂 I really enjoy it though! -J
Thats crazy that Cabela's would tolerate that type of activity in their parking lot. It will eventually ruin it for good RV'rs to stay there if they decide not to allow anyone to park there. Great work Joe on fixing the RV and saving $1000.
If you watch @WildRVLife's most recent video they go into more details on the infamous "Cabela's incident." 😁 -J
Whistling or humming helps when you are in pain. Probably involuntary. Glad you fixed your issues.

I tried to refuse…but eventually my back was just done. -J
I have been to the Alaskan Sealife Centre. It was our included excursion on our cruise, a wonderful experience. We then walked along by the water and spoke to people camping on the water. Loving your Alaskan adventures from Australia 🇦🇺.
Loving the series! Keep them coming!
Trying hard to get a new one out each week! 10 months and we've only missed 2 weeks! -J

So sorry you got sick. That certainly puts a damper on the trip. But you sure are troopers! You pulled through and even recorded while not feeling well! It's been a rough week, had to do some physical work that I wasn't planning to do and I feel you on the back pain. So enjoyed watching your video and you did a great job fixing that slide! Now time to relax and rest, at least until Sunday when I get to watch Wild RV Life to see what else you guys have been up to... LOL I am so enjoying watching you guys travel together!
Enjoy the rest! There's nothing quite like unexpected physical work to derail a week! -J
Good episode. Great job on the repairs you saved some money. So sorry you weren’t feeling well. But I have to say when you’re back was so bad you had to let your wife drive. You didn’t need to find something to do. Maybe you could have just. Rest and relax. Love the Bridgewater hoodie!
We are very picky about who we rep on our shirts. Only the best. 😀 -J
i agree with another commenter about Aleve, however I take the pill form. If it gets really bad see a doctor about some muscle relaxants, but no driving and you can feel sleepy the next day too. Like I said, really bad spasms only. Glad you both are on the mend.
@@OpenRoading Yup, it’s all about happy mediums.
Just found your channel - awesome video. I sympathize for anyone with a back issue. I dealt with that for many years and luckily my back has been good since. Very hard to even lift your legs to hit the brakes - I know. Continued safe travels!

Awesome job fixing the slide! Your camper looks so much like ours that we sold last fall.
It’s a hardy rig!! -J

Hi I found you coz of your friends in tow great. People thank you God bless
Craig and Victoria are the best!! It’s been an awesome summer primarily because we’ve gotten to enjoy it with them. 🤗 -J
About those screws, use a dab of glue, or nail polish in a pinch, to keep them from backing out from vibration. But not too much so they never come out.
Look at you Mr. Handyman on the road! Nice work on the fix. Hope the rest of the trip goes smoothly.
If you are still in the area, visit the reindeer farm in Palmer AK. You will get up close to some very large alaskan animals. Yes people die on the mudflats every year by walking on them and getting stuck in the mud.
Cordless impacts work great
Indeed! -J
You're a trooper, mate. Handled that flu with resilience.
And a few complaints 😉 I don't think I full on Man-Colded it though so I'm proud of that. LOL -J
As to the slide - I have the opposite thought... I assume my fix is good for 100 sets of pulling in and out....so I don't want to waste 15 of them on tests. LOL -J
Another fun video! Sorry that illness dampened a bit of your trip but hopefully you both all better by now and back to fully enjoying this spectacular trip!! Safe travels!
