For the people saying that the axes look unusable because the handle is too short. He is a master on saving time and avoiding details that don't really matter. That's why he makes them short. Because they can become longer super fast after he decides what they'll look like and which one is getting picked.
I really appreciated the bit where he talked about dealing with rejected work as an artist. I've been struggling with that recently and it's just nice to hear that I'm not the only one. Love your work!
I really love just watching him working and all his to thoughts about different things and how to really grow not only as a productive person but also as an artist
You are 100 percent correct about concept art of a living in art in general isn't truly all that glamourous. I'm a comic book Illustrator...ive had to redraw panels, concepts, long nights, there truly isn't any celebrity in it like the 90s with Image and whatnot...the reason to draw as much as we do I because we love it...we love coming up with ideas, designs, how much we learn about the history of this world as well as how we grow as artists...it's not always peaches and cream and chicks with big boobs...but it's what we love to do. And anyone who wants to get into this, has to love it as well . Great video, sir :)
I’m apprenticing to become a tattoo artist, and I’ve found a lot of your videos, this one specifically, to be very helpful. I’ve always been the type of artist that likes to render something for weeks, but I’ve been having to learn to think more like a designer than I ever thought I would, as the image in my field still has to serve application and is also limited to some extent by the medium. It’s a hard pill to swallow at times, that the most compelling imagery is usually at its core simple, even with some of the most detailed artists I grew up admiring like Moebius or Serpieri. The image is always appealing even from a distance. Thanks for these tutorials and tips!
Man watching you draw all those patterns with the symmetry tool was mesmerizing! I struggle with adding detail to my pieces, so seeing you work & listening to your advice really helps! Thanks for the longer video!
I want to thank you for this because when I first started writing my graphic novel I didn't think too much into that stuff and now my world is starting to feel more open and alive vs just being in one spot. also I have been asking people when I do redraws to explain more about their characters so I can use that info in the redesign.
Man at right around min 19:40 is where I wished I could subscribe a 3rd time. I already was subscribed on my personal account but I had to like and subscribe again with my work account too. Keep on hittin em with the "troof!" my dude. I tell my students we aren't shooting for perfection we aim for completion.
This was really interesting and inspiring! Made me want to design more weapons. XD Thank you! I wish Photoshop had a good symmetry tool. Looks very neat!
Hats down sir, thank you for sharing your rigteous skills! I actually got to try sketchbook pro after I saw this video and the software seems so much lighter and better for what I use it for, concepting for my 3D work! Thanks for the vid and keep on rockin'!
omg when you made that axe that is on the top right. I was thinking it should on the blade base have a gap and something for the handle like a hand gaurd which you placed the brace knuckles and that gap. lol my mind was blown!
This video really lit up my imagination, and i loved hearing about the story-building you do to help you come up with good concept. For me it elevates the art-process in a meaningful way, making it more inspiring to work on a piece. I will try to adapt this process in my own work from now on. I'd love to hear more about your process creating environments, and culture-styles in the future! =D
really cool vid man! love these weapon conceptart. would love to see more of that, but i also respect that you might have other plans instead :P i remember myself at school randomly drawing "medieval/primal savage weapons" pretty much similar way as in this video.
most of those axes are so short and the blades are so close to the handles that i can't imagine a hand gripping them. the brass knuckle one it's ok, it's mega short but at least it has some space to put the hand but most of them are ungripable. I know it's a fantasy drawing, but just have a hand in mind whenever you create a new weapon
Agreed. They look all great but unholdable. Especially 6th one is impossible to hold. And many of them are too short. I'm pretty sure that he can easily extend all the handles in a minute though.
Man that are some badass axes. :D I draw a loot of weapons and armors lately and I try to imagine how this will feel if I have to wear it or use it. But its still hard for me to get realy into this. :D
People who new to the design world, have to accept the fact that you can't only make one concept and spent all your hard work in that. and expect your project leader to accept that.
why did you choose to use this program for this task? Would you usually use different programs for different pieces? And which would you recommend as the better program to use? Another person I watch on UA-cam says all companies still use photoshop exclusively, is that true of game design as well?
Trent, Ive been following you a lot and you've helped me through many Artist block and motivation, thank you! I want to ask, do you prefer Sketchbook Pro over Photoshop? And do you still use Photoshop?
Hi Trent, not sure if you'll end up seeing this but man.. I'd truly appreciate your input on something I've been struggling with. How do weapon designers come up with guns, or artillery, projectile weapons? I watch some artists create brilliant, sci-fi, mechanical, or more blocky but conceptually functional weapons, and I have no idea where to start with those weapons. I'll usually look at old machinery, or a factories production floor to have an idea for mechanical parts and their movement, but applying that to projectile weapons just doesn't translate. They turn out too blocky, or not intricate enough. How do you find the middle ground, between blocky, intricate, and functional when designing a gun or projectile weapon? Thank you for all of your videos. They've been incredibly inspiring, and I've been following them for what feels like years. I couldn't ask for a better source of knowledge.
You talked about hidden backstories in the projects that you've worked on. What's your take on Ivern's interactions with the jungle creatures on Summoner's Rift?
Can you answer me one question please? how much time have you taked to do these designs without the speed up? I'm always thinking I am so slow in everything I draw, but maybe it's just a mis perception, I don't know. In any case thanks a lot for the video!
which pencil brush is it that you use? I love its texture! Also this video was fantastic as always, this is exactly the kind of concept art I want to develop more so it was great to watch your process
These axes have such short handles. Either your fingers or your hands will be cut. Plus, if the handle is so short there is no mechanical advantage, it can't swing as hard as something with a long handle
Trent I've been wondering recently what the tool is that you use in sketchbook pro to get your original siloute, as well as any of the other brushes you use on a regular basis
Hey I love your work. I have a question for you. Say for a 2d game, how do decide what size to draw the assets. Games i have played, have small assets but they have lots of detail and quality. When i try to do the same my assets turn blurry. Is there something i am missing ? Hopefully you understand what i am asking haha. Thanks for you time and video's.
Thanks for you response, shocked i got an answer back from a pro. I am trying to learn digital art and art concepts but failing. The work you do is amazing thanks for sharing them with everyone.
Trent, those are cool looking axes! However, i don't quite understand how can they be handled. I imagine elves wont be using those, humans? maybe, but those look more like dwarven/orc axes. Those species have huge hands and huge fingers, and even if they didnt have, even if those were for a race with tiny slender hands, they wouldn't be able to hold them, let alone use them in combat, isn't functionality always in the first place? I understand that for example in FF XII Cloud has his huge sword, completely unrealistical, but at least it's technically possible to hold such a sword.
that's a good question, but I guess these are just to get the feel of the style and this page would go through some people, who would decide which axes they like and give some feedback as to what should be changed
Hey I'm thinking about getting sketchbook for my iPad Pro, I currently use Procreate but I like the look of this, does it have all the same features on iPad does anyone know?
that's not a good tutorial for the beginners , it overwhelming us, we will gonna appreciate if you start making something simple and we can learn step by step
@@TrentKaniuga THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT yes i will gonna watch all that serie, man honestly I'm getting tired of tutorials around, i have been subscribed in your channel like a several months ago due to your advanced skills, your arts is Coooool ,, but me as beginner with digital art i found myself really lost and i can't find the right path to learn. i will gonna appreciate your hand ( Help). I love how you can look at each one of these and imagine a totally different character wielding each one
I simply got a freelance to make tons of fantasy weapons concepts, and this video has helped me so much! Thanks Trent!
If you're sponsored by Sketchbook Pro and are subtly selling it, its working. Seeing you use it and talk about it makes me want to try it.
well it's a free app. so... You should.
I really love just watching him working and all his to
thoughts about different things and how to really grow not only as a productive person but also as an artist
Sooooo satisfying and therapeutic to watch

Working in comics is hard core. Respect!
I love the way you vary the size of the parts of a drawing!

Not only super helpful but you really keep it real. I formally dub this video a certified hood classic.

Great that we finally a symmetry feature in Photoshop as well, and hey, it just took them 25 years :)
I found myself really enjoying weapon design recently. glad this popped up in my subscription box.
Your vids are therapeutic. Helps to draw and to be at ease
I agree
This is what I missed 5 years ago 😂❤❤ thank you for your tips.

Loving that explosion effect on the intro!
This was really interesting and inspiring!

Thank you!
I wish Photoshop had a good symmetry tool. Looks very neat!
Just watched this again. By far one of my favorite videos! The way you think of shape language and construction is just awesome!
Great video, Trent! I agree, story is the most important aspect of a good design.
they all looks as amazing as they are unusable- the only thing I hate in video games. Great video and tutorial! Keep the great work
Omg this dude created Blade of the Ruined King,Championship Riven and my Silver trophy Icons from season 2 :O.Well u are the master!
Dude! How do you draw amazing axes like this?! Every single one of them is awesome! Hahaha.
These designs are gorgeous !
Trent, this video was awesome. I'm a big user of Sketch Book Pro. It really is a great product. Keep up the great videos dude!
Love listening to your design philosophy. Always a good reality check
you are an absolute guidance Trent, thank you so much

Great work man. I see the Diablo feeling came up from these axes!
This is so awesome! I love your art so much and you have taught me so much about concept art!
Amazing job Trent! keep the videos coming!!!
I like to desing weapons and armors too!
This is an amazing video. Thank you ^^
Around @20:00 you mention hidden stories that may never be found hidden in the enviroment. Would be awesome to hear some of it!

Just downloaded Autodesk today, quite surprised with how many shortcut tools there are. I am digging it!
Nice bro.
Man i love your art. It just looks like that the axe head is too near to the handle.
I thought so too, but I think it's just to keep all the designs fitting on one page, since handles usually don't need a whole of extra detail
Agreed. They look all great but unholdable. Especially 6th one is impossible to hold. And many of them are too short. I'm pretty sure that he can easily extend all the handles in a minute though.
He's not the one that approves it, he just draws lol
If he wants to cram many designs in one page he needs to keep them as short as he can.
Great video, as always. I guess the 20:00 axe will be hard to hold :P
very very very nice.. .. great work!!!

Am i the only one who likes the enviromental world building type of concept art cooler than the character design stuff?

Amazing Ax blades and heads! Though I don't understand how anyone would be able to hold them, since the handles look odd.
Can you answer me one question please? how much time have you taked to do these designs without the speed up? I'm always thinking I am so slow in everything I draw, but maybe it's just a mis perception, I don't know. In any case thanks a lot for the video!

Very informative. Thanks for the effort : )

im new here to try improve my draw, (and i'll enjoy it as a podcast) ;)
is your brush in the software or is it personalized ? nice work !
u've a fan here man, o/
Trent I've been wondering recently what the tool is that you use in sketchbook pro to get your original siloute, as well as any of the other brushes you use on a regular basis
We love RPG-like melee weapons. Thank you.
By the way: How do you change colors "that fast"?
Hey I love your work. I have a question for you. Say for a 2d game, how do decide what size to draw the assets. Games i have played, have small assets but they have lots of detail and quality. They drew them big and resized the image. You can always go smaller later so make it big.
Thanks for you response, shocked i got an answer back from a pro. I am trying to learn digital art and art concepts but failing. The work you do is amazing thanks for sharing them with everyone.
Failure is your best teacher. Make sure you learn something or failure will become a habit and it will bury you.
Nice as always. Have you done like Sci fi weapons?
How long did it take you to develop your main brush set?

Zyraelify true. Also it's VII. You said 12
why doesnt have photoshop such a symmetry tool? I will have to take another look at sketchbook pro i suppose.
This is amazing!
if only i could draw :( ha
Hey I'm thinking about getting sketchbook for my iPad Pro, I currently use Procreate but I like the look of this, does it have all the same features on iPad does anyone know?
basically, you gotta axe the questions!!!
......
i'm sorry
no
@Milk Guy dani
wow.. god hand
I use sketchbook pro but I cannot find that pencil brush....
Trent should try Clip Studio Paint
🖤
Wich brush is it your using?
hi i see you tutorial box pack how much

it’s funny that these designs don’t make any sense. they’re just shapy nonsense
Have you ever played World of Warcraft? lol.
