- Légende - d’après les Elfes de Leconte de Lisle
Henriette Renié (1875 - 1956)
Live unedited recording, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London, June 2018
Directly inspired by the poem The Elves by Leconte de Lisle, Légende portrays the tragic story of a knight’s journey and fight against the malevolent elves as he attempts to find his betrothed. The Elf Queen, however, kills his beloved bride, a tragic episode which Renié translates into music by using the technique of plucking the strings with the nails.
Dedicated to Theodore Dubois who was Director of the Paris Conservatoire at the time, it was published in 1901. This highly programmatic and orchestrally-coloured music is the epitome of Renié’s genius, and of her ambition to present the harp as a fully-fledged solo instrument.
