3rd yr med student here and seriously considering Internal Med 💗 and yes, the the attraction to its complexity resonates with me. I'm also thinking a lot about Surgery, on the other hand. I enjoy learning both at an almost equal level. Perhaps next year's clerkship will give me more clarity as to what specialty to go into. Thanks so much for this video! Glad to know that a lot of people actually share the same sentiments I have regarding the field of Internal Medicine. Gives so much hope and encouragement to people like me who are at a cross-roads in life right now. 💞
I love the art of the admission block. Tracking ER patients and being ready with a rebuttal as to why a patient does not need admission to the hospital is one of my favorite things that keeps the job exciting after 10 yrs. Tactful debating with ER providers sparks introspection and may bring some heat initially but the ER providers will think twice about a lackluster workup before they call you for a future admission.

I would like to choose IM but I recently took step 1 and I'm pretty sure I failed. I've not seen my result but honestly I'm not hopeful of a positive outcome. please is it still possible to match into IM with a failed attempt?

Are there many options for specialising or sub-specialising into neurology on top on internal medicine? Also is it possible to do both internal medicine and surgery at least to some extent?
I am a general medicine PG and it is so confusing esp. in my hospital where we deal patients of neuro, pulmo, cardio , rheuma , nephro , gastro, even suspeected covid19 pts. due to unavailability of the mentioned wards . All patients come to the general medical ward and its a f******* mess ! drives a doctor insaane !
In US are cases admitted under our name in hospital after we complete IM residency? Or cases admitted only under the name of fellowship completed doctor? Do we get nyt calls though we are not in night shift after IM residency in US??
Essentially when you're an attending - so after residency. But if you do fellowship then it would go under your attending. Night call depends on the job you sign up for. For example, I don't have any but some have some or all nights in their schedules

I really like the outpatient setting but I would still like to do inpatient as I would like to retain the skills and ability to manage inpatients and more critical cases.

There is two options, one is bachelor and the other one is general medicine residency. I want to be a medical doctor as well as the best I can be. But, I don't know which one should I choose! PLEASE HELP ME
Hi, when to choose for a fellowship, do we have to write an exam or what is the procedure. Also as you mentioned in the video, after 3 years of internal medicine residency, if we want to do a fellowship, do we have to do right after residency or can we work for an year & then join a fellowship.

I can surely make a video on this. I'll say this first - nothing you do in the summer will really make you more prepared. Seems untrue but you tend to study with a different focus during actual school vs. light passes. Enjoy your summer. A good test is to ask yourself at the end of the year if extra review would have helped. Almost guaranteed you'll say you didn't need it. If you do choose one (because it's tempting ) go for anatomy of just the first block (back, arms, chest) you'll be covering. Micro is too heavy to review during your summer. But once again. With what I know now - the summer before med school should be used for hobbies, vacations, chilling, and personal growth. Thanks for your comment!
@@TheMDJourney Thanks man! I know a lot of current students say to not bother "pre-studying" but I do want to have a leg up if I can. If nothing else, if I can prepare anatomy or learn some micro that will help me not need to study so aggressively later than it is worth it. My school starts out with gross anatomy as it's major first class, so maybe I will lean more toward learning that. I just heard that bugs/pharm requires pure memorization that just takes a ton of time to manage

Not as common to do neuro/IM or IM/surgery

Internist = internal medicine intensivist = internal medicine doctor that specializes in critical care (ICU)

Yes you can work and choose to apply later. Its another application process (essays, resume, interviews) but no extra exam

Neurosurgery is only 1-2 years longer to get to the attending level than internal medicine....
3 years for IM residency vs. 7 years for neurosurgery residency. So 4 years at least
