- A playthrough of Seta's 1990 action-platformer for the NES, Castle of Dragon.
It's not a terrible game, nor is it a good one. Castle of Dragon is odd in how intentionally stiff its controls are, and like the arcade game upon which it is based, how insanely cheap it is, through-and-through, as well as how it generally reeks of a lack of polish. The best representative example of this that comes to mind is how the game penalizes you when you use the mace. It the most powerful weapon in the game, but it randomly deals damage whenever you use it. How fun! Since there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how it dishes out the dolors, swinging your best weapon ends up becoming something of an absolute crap shoot. Partner that with seemingly endless numbers of unavoidable enemy attacks and you get a game with a bloodlust that really does its best to hinder your fun. Eveything feels just a bit too flaky.
At the very least, though you get one life and can't continue from the stage you died on, you do get to keep your weapons and extended life bar when you restart the game.
Thankfully, there's no real reason to play this if you're looking for a more-methodical-than-the-norm NES platformer. Athena, the developer, released what was essentially a remake of this game - the 1992 Activision release Sword Master.
There's little differentiate the general mechanics in terms of bullet-points, but unlike Castle of Dragon, Sword Master's control is completely solid, the framerate consistently stays well above 12fps, the enemies typically move in generally discernible patterns, and the graphics blow away those of nearly any other game on the NES. Sword Master was also an absurdly difficult game, but the challenge was a bit more fair in that one. I appreciated that a great deal.
Anyway, if you want to play Athena's first pass at a concept, try Castle of Dragon. When you're done getting killed and are staring open-jawed at the pile of awesome ideas that was hampered by Castle of Dragon's inept execution, go ahead and move along to Sword Master. You'll promptly forget that this exists.
...well, except for a hidden Easter egg. Now, stop reading here if you are below the age of 18 or are otherwise sensitive to "adult" imagery:
Check out the end of the video. I tacked on the hidden "bonus" ending scene, wherein the princess - experiencing an extreme wardrobe malfunction - comes bounding toward you after the last boss is killed. This alternate scene is shown if you hold down up, left, a, b, start, and select at the final cutscene before the credit scroll.
Yeah, that's right. That's in an officially licensed NES game. Deformed though she may be, that's quite the image to slip by Nintendo's censors! :o

I owned this game in the 90s was never able to beat it so watching this was absolutely amazingly awesome.
It's not the worst game I've played on the NES by far, but why bother? Sword Master is essentially the same game, only it was blessed with good production values, solid controls, and every other thing else that this game lacks. On the other hand, Castle of Dragon does have boobies, so if that means a lot to you...

I couldn’t help but feel some Castlevania vibes from this game (especially since the knight sprite is the same colour as Simon’s sprite, and he also has a Vampire Killer-esque weapon)
I rented this, and since games either didn't come with instructions, or very basic ones, never could figure out why I was dying when using my weapon (the mace), but was obviously taking no damage from enemies. That's right up there with Wolverine's claws hurting him when you use them.
This was actually a port of a VERY obscure arcade game of the same name which was released in US arcades by Romstar.
This game was so fun. A real diamond in the rough, wasn't a big franchise or anything. I remember all this music clear as day. I could definitely beat it back then.

NES games were never actually supposed to be beaten. And among this hardcore the developers set one try for the whole story. I miss that time.
Oh yeah, forgot about that hidden scene at the end. Knew about it before from the game's TCRF article but forgot it existed, thanks for the reminder. Quite the reward for beating such a tough game.
This one made an impression on me when it was time to finally give it it's chance at the rental store because it does what I would later recognize Phantom Fighter improved and Sword Master perfected. And I can't be the only one who sees a resemblance to Splatterhouse. I really, REALLY agree with the encounter-by-encounter, methodical style of games like this that was so rare in their time, but became an entire genre when Devil May Cry popularized what started with Onimusha. Ocarina of Time's Z-targeting instantly reminded me of these sorts of games and it instantly melted away any apprehensions I may have had about it.

Why does everything retro have to be the Dark Souls of it's generation, like Dark Souls is some kind of good game better than everything else? Why can't this Dark Souls be the modern version of a retro game? You kids always get everything backwards. Besides Dark Souls is not nearly beastly hard like the 8 and 16 bit generation of games were, not even close.

The first though in my head after reading the title was... "The final boss of a game named "Castle of DRAGON, will be an actual dragon?" a part of me laughed a bit when I glared the final boss, the same situation happened to me with the first Dragon Quest.
The game seems a bit like Castlevania or at least the attack with the sword remember me to the good old whip attack due to the timing and rhythm of the attack.
I also liked the design of the helmet, it was pretty cool.
About the interesting final secret scene, I guess the game was so hard that the Nintendo censors did not arrive to actually watch the scene or the guys at Seta pressed their luck a lot and didn't tell a secret to Nintendo.
The life and power bars are from Mega Man.Something reminds me Ghost n' Goblins and Zelda 2.
The between level map screen made me think of the map in G ‘n’ G instantly

...This is what they had back then, I guess. Reminds me of that other sexy gem with the princess who gets stripped, *Phelios.* Such nostalgia. Nowadays they just make high-quality H-games that you can just play on your browser. Imagine that! A mere dream in the 20th century. Anime waifus and all...
Life is way too easy for us spoiled gamers seeking sexual gratification, isn't it? ha. We could learn a thing or two from this era...

Just like Maruko Chan did wrote, the H-games were famous in the 80s and 90s as well, but like you can expect these games were only for PC and home computers, there were a few games for consoles but of course the sexual content were removed at all or it is mostly more tame than search "boobs" in Google with the safe filther on.
A few examples are a game for SNES, visual novels for Turbo-Grafx and Sega Saturn and the only example that I remember, Strip Fighter 2 for PC Engine.
I have played and beaten Strip Fighter but it is just Street Fighter 2 with unbearable women as fighter, the sexual content is mostly tame or will dissapoint you if you wanted to choked the chicken.
The h games of the present are full of weeb trash and inmorale subjects, but I am sure that them will make a good job allowing you to choke the chicken and release a load.
Strike Gunner STG, Lutter, and this...Athena were underrated bad ass developers that got crapped on a lot. This game reminds me of Wizards and Warriors vibe mixed with tad of Castlevania and Ghost n Ghouls.

No this is a brand new playthrough. The original video for this game was only 240p, so I did it over again with much higher quality.

I remember there was a game about a dragon, it was a vertical shooter, and the power ups added a second and third head to the dragon, do you know what game is it? It was for the NES.

I quite enjoyed the game but I experienced an always appearing bug in the final boss fight and thus I never completed the game. Astyanox is much better.
