      Me too....I have three feather weights, I have 4 soon to be 5 of these 500's. WHAT you say. I was gifted by guilt ridden parents a 500 at the age of 12 in 1962. Yes that makes me 74 now and my machine will be 62 this summer. The others were picked up over the past 10 years to have spare parts for my original who started showing her age around the half century mark. First thing it broke a hand wheel spring. Ordered two spare machines thinking parts. One wasn't a 500 some how a bait and switch by seller. The other was frozen due to the wrong oil used on her. Even repair services couldn't fix it. It has a few parts that probably would swap out if need be. Then I bought a third which arrived with shipping damage but still I used last summer outside on a covered 24 foot patio while I re-designed and sewed trim in a 22 year old class B+ RV I bought a year earlier. Anyway I just ordered yet another used 500 because the summer machine is giving me problems which are classic to these machines such as jamming up in the bobbin area. Also tension problems which are part of the damage due to shipping. Still it's all fixable we believe. And today the new spring for the original arrived the newest machine arrives tomorrow. And it's in a lovely portable case which means I'll have a spare for taking alone in that RV. Evenings when I've read the books along and no cell or TV nor do I want to watch DVD's I'll be able to sew. Plus I'll have three working 500's. I'm so happy I'm like a bird with that french fry. May your NEW MACHINE give you 62 years of wonderful sewing. Mine made my wedding dress in 72, but has sewn mainly heavy duty fabrics like pack cloth, Cordura 500-1000D's, marine canvas of various weights as well as coated and uncoated vinyls and upholstery fabrics. We literally wore the lady out. Tents, sleeping bags, down jackets, ever bag imaginable and many we did just that thought them up out of thin air. The machine is and will remain a work horse. We do take good care of our machines. Service them, lubricate with correct oil and grease. I just ordered two more tubes of grease to insure each machine has it's own service kit at hand. Oh it did my wedding gown proud and my husbands raw silk country dress jacket back more than 50 years ago too. I forgot I used to make all his work/cowboy shirts with snaps and fancy stitched yokes. All with this machine and an occasional childhood kitty sitting on the corner of the cabinet as it sewed away. The cats were kittens when I was 15 and so my husband married me for my sewing machine, my new car I had paid off three months before the wedding and my cats. That's half the joke the other half is I married him because he could keep the machines running and he liked cats. The latter being the most important of course. I drove that car to death 24 straight years. Used it in my career in the Ag Fields for work or it might have gone another 10. Our latest car was new in 2004 so it's going strong and looks good. We have 5 college degrees between us. And our sewing machines have played a significant part in our lives both together and individually. My parent had no idea what a gift they gave that 12 year old. My brothers fish tanks, clarinet and all the fishing equipment doesn't even exist in his world today. I never complained about all they gave my brother but for some odd reason they noticed and when I came home from doing my 2 week visit to grandparents one summer they presented me with this Machine. I didn't know what to think at 12? Just sat down and began reading the manual. Yes even at age 12 I read manuals. And just down loaded a PDF service manual to print out for each machine has it's own along with the user manual and a small service kit small box bag you can find directions for here on UA-cam. Many many happy projects to you.

    Such a beautifully maintained machine and so quiet. Ive wanted one for years, but they never made it to the UK. Now Im in US, I'm fulfilling that dream. Ive found one locally but the needle doesnt move and its making a high pitch buzzing. Now I've heard this one I know its not the bobbin clutch engaged. Could it be a jammed camstack like you mention here? Or more likely the motor or pedal on way out? Fearful of buying a lemon!

    • @tksewingmachineandrepair4243
      @tksewingmachineandrepair4243  Рік тому +1

      If the needle does not move, this machine has most likely been sitting unused for many years. The first thing I would do is remove the top covers, bottom covers and oil everywhere metal meets metal. Do not run the machine until you can turn that handwheel manually. Could it be the camstack? Maybe. However, most of the time the issue is along the main shaft drive all the way to the needle bar. Oil the machine and wiggle the handwheel every day. Eventually it will loosen up. IN my shop, I spray the entire machine down with degreaser and then wash it out with water. The body of the machine is aluminum. Then I spray a fine mist of oil all over the inside of the machine. Then, I work on figuring out what is stuck.

      @@tksewingmachineandrepair4243 Thank you! I appreciate the experienced advice, I was hopeful it's more likely that. Its an estate sale so it's very possible that it's not been used in years. It's looking a little sad.
      Years ago I opened up a Singer 347/8 to find it locked solid with aged grease. I'd got it as a non-runner for parts for another one I had been given, but once I cleaned it, it ran beautifully and I ended up with two of them to pass forward! I really enjoyed cleaning the machines, it's very therapeutic and rewarding to give them TLC and a second life. You have an awesome job!

    When winding a bobbin, you loosen the stop motion wheel with the right hand, place thread on the spool pin and take the thread to the left between the tension discs on the top of the machine then over to the bobbin winder passing alongside a post that helps control the thread. Then through one of the four holes in the top of bobbin. Position the bobbin on the winder spindle and engage the latch by pressing against the bobbin. Hold the thread end to start winding. ( Hold tight until thread breaks ) Activate machine with foot controller. The full bobbin will automatically release. Tighten stop motion wheel. Cut thread. It will wind perfectly on the bobbin when you use the tension discs.

    I have my mother's 500a that she had new and took really good care of it. I was going to buy a new machine but I've decided to use her machine. It has been sitting in it's original case for about 13 years. I'm going to have it cleaned and serviced first, is that what you recommend doing? Also, what is the recommended amount of time sewing between oiling? I read after 8 hours but not sure if that is accurate. My mother never had a bit of trouble with this machine and I want to take care of it properly.

    • @tksewingmachineandrepair4243
      @tksewingmachineandrepair4243  Рік тому +1

      Where are you located? You want to make sure that the repair shop that you take this machine to, works on vintage machines. I sew on an old Kenmore. I can always tell by how she sounds when I need to oil her. I stop and oil her. If you are sewing non stop, 8 hours would be fine. The 500 needs oil on the worm gear and bushings that control the swing arm, which also controls your stitch width and ability to do the fashion stitches. All are under the top lid. If there is nothing wrong with her, take the cover plates off, vacuum her out, oil her. She should be fine

      The manual has the oiling points and schedual. Some oil has paraffin (very bad) so use sewing machine oil. These are metal to metal, oil frequently. These may be high maintained but maintenence is simple. Cared for machines will sew like new long after modern machines are in a landfill.

    • @tksewingmachineandrepair4243

      I believe the 503 is straight only. The 500 does a multitude of stitches

    • @1953childstar
      @1953childstar 2 роки тому

      The # 503 is a straight stitch, plus will do a variety of zigzag stitches with the "drop in cams". The only drawback is that the stitch is "only as good as the cam".. Meaning, if the bakelite cam has manufacturing flaws it will not create an accurate stitch. I had issues with basic zigzag stitch width. I find that the # 500 is easier to use because all the stitches are built in.
