Anyone remember the 1951 film 'The Day The Earth stood still' ? In the last scene, Klatu told the world leaders, "I am not here to help you resolve your petty problems. I am an envoy, I am here to give you a message. Do not come out here, and bring your aggression. We will turn your planet into a burning cinder." I find that old film to be very prophetic.
We are a self absorbed and think we are the big fish. If there is intelligent life out there and finds us, we will find out we are nothing and at the mercy of a more advanced civilization. In only 250 years, we could battle every war with an army of 25 people. And they may never step foot on a battlefield. A civilization that is thousands or millions yrs advanced, would laugh at our aggression and hostility.
In 1976 in the UK, when I was aged 8 we were experiencing an amazing summer. I was out playing with friends. A crystal clear, blue sky. We saw a white object high up in the atmosphere and it descended, becoming larger. We all saw it. It was what we now would call a "tic tac". No noise from it, no vapour trail, no wings. I would estimate it descended to about a thousand feet and was clear as anything. The same shape as a tic tac but what has struck me since then are two things in addition to the aforementioned. One: It was perfectly smooth and white, looked like it was made of porcelain, just like the porcelain they make toilets out of with no rivets, bonds or joins. Two: After floating above us for about 20 seconds it shot up with incredible speed. It just zipped out of there like a bullet from a standing start. Incredible. I know what I saw. It was not from this planet for sure.
I've also seen a flying Saucer in Arizona. literally the size of a football field. at an altitude of 500 meters high in the middle of the desert. I drove there with my car. on a desert road. that thing followed me for half an hour. and became with purple lights scanning my car. i was scared as hell. I know what I've seen. and it does not come from this earth. he also shot like a bullet within seconds back into the clearing universe between the stars. Let's face it, it's impossible that life is possible on Earth alone. the problem that we don't find aliens is . the distances in light years are even if you can travel at 300,000 Km per second. it still takes you 100th 1000th million years to get to our neighbor proxima centauri 4.3 light years travel. I believe with all my heart that we are not alone. and the aliens who have been visiting us for 1000 years are local extraterrestrials. who live near us for up to 10 light years. And the weirdest thing is that people want to believe in a god whatever his name is. blind to faith of a book and a story. but in the real belief that we are not alone People just don't want to believe that. there are almost 5 billion believers on this earth . and admit that aliens do not exist, when the real truth comes out, these beliefs will fall and world wars will break out. My father was an engineer on the telescope for SETI in PR. He worked on other NASA projects before he left to work with White Sands Missile Range. I think the woman at the 11:00 min mark is the woman that the movie “Contact” was based on. I could be wrong. Anyway, my father brought home the most amazing telescopes. I wish everyone could experience what I did and see what I saw. I believe that if only one planet, in every galaxy, has intelligent life then we have hundreds of millions of planets with intelligent life. No we won’t. Here on earth we can say don’t capture these animals and people will still do because it is accessible, but space travel is just different it will run by smart people like Elon.
The only way they could do that is if an extraterrestrial spacecraft would crash somewhere, because if they would land here to make contact with us I don't think they would let us catch them and even if they would catch an alien they would literally destroy us especially with their technology that is thousands or even million years ahead of us. I doubt the government would take the risk of kidnaping an alien, it would be the other way around, the aliens would capture humans for tests.
Cant speak for Aliens but Humans treat animals based on there intelligence capability....We elephant, or dolphin, or ape differently then we would an earth worm, cockroach, field mouse ext.....If we found what we would consider a intellecual peer to us that would be a different form of treatment as well. You dont treat your peers the same way you do your dog as an example. You might enjoy both your dog and your coworkers company....but you treat them differently because of there difference in intellect....The biggest two questions would be how capable we identify the aliens to us, and perhaps more importantly, how do they view our intelligence or capability to themselves. Common sense would dictate that its more likely the smarter species would be the one making the introduction and the less smarter species would be the one recieving company from other visitors.

Finding a planet with life on like earth, is like finding a specific signed grain of sand on 1 of earth's beaches or in the depths of one of our oceans and saying go find it with no clues to what beach/ocean/country it was hidden in/on and then making it a billion times harder by spacing out each grain of sand light years apart without oxygen, water or food. isn't it obvious why? you need antennae to capture the signals, you'd need them all over the world, such you have no blind spots, then computers to analyse the signals and discriminate it from noise, maybe decode it, if it ever gets received. Also there's need for money to pay for the massive amounts of electricity needed for all the equipment, but also their operators and designers need pay as well. the truth is that ET could transmit at this moment and there would be no way of detecting it, SETI got only to mere percents of the funding it needed.

But if there were other non-benign, more technologcally advanced civilisations out there who wanted our resources or to destroy us then they would have been here and taken them and destroyed us as a civilisation long before now; but as we are quite capable of doing that ourselves anyway without their intervention, I feel that they would see us as very primitive in such a comparison and not worth bothering with. The Earth is a planet in a small, insignificant solar system which in turn is situated right on the very edge of an insignificant galaxy in the entire universe of trillions of others. Any 'intelligent' civilisation owes to itself the value of learning and developing from each other, communicating between each other and so on, this is fundamental to humanity's existence on the planet Earth, so why not outside our environs? And 'they' may very well be trying to communicate with us but we are not technologically advanced to recognise or interpret those communications or, they may be technologically inferior and can't respond? And of course it would be dangerous to assume we are the most intelligent life in the universe and bring a whole load of problems upon us so we also need to be prepared in case we are not! But equally we owe it to ourselves to search for other civilisations; we owe it to ourselves not to assume we are superior in the universe, we owe it to ourselves not to ignore the fact that in a universe of trillions of planets there could be others like us or not so much like us. And I can't think of a greater risk than living on a massive ball of rock floating in an infinite void and held up by mere gravity alone! So you don't need to say anything more at all, just open your mind more to possibilities, which is the more important thing!

The big question is: is it possible for humans to communicate effectively with a different form of life?? We don't know the exact number, but by using enough data, we can statistically figure out approximately how many galaxies there are within the visible universe. This dataset does not change in the span of a lifetime, while weather patterns radically change in the span of hours or days due to a large number of unpredictable variables. Not sure why you would think our ability to predict weather indicates our ability to analyze galaxies.

In 1976 in the UK, when I was aged 8 we were experiencing an amazing summer. I was out playing with friends. A crystal clear, blue sky. We saw a white object high up in the atmosphere and it descended, becoming larger. We all saw it. It was what we now would call a "tic tac". No noise from it, no vapour trail, no wings. I would estimate it descended to about a thousand feet and was clear as anything. The same shape as a tic tac but what has struck me since then are two things in addition to the aforementioned. One: It was perfectly smooth and white, looked like it was made of porcelain, just like the porcelain they make toilets out of with no rivets, bonds or joins. Two: After floating above us for about 20 seconds it shot up with incredible speed. It just zipped out of there like a bullet from a standing start. Incredible. I know what I saw. It was not from this planet for sure.

My father was an engineer on the telescope for SETI in PR. He worked on other NASA projects before he left to work with White Sands Missile Range. I think the woman at the 11:00 min mark is the woman that the movie “Contact” was based on. I could be wrong. Anyway, my father brought home the most amazing telescopes. I wish everyone could experience what I did and see what I saw. Cant speak for Aliens but Humans treat animals based on there intelligence capability....We elephant, or dolphin, or ape differently then we would an earth worm, cockroach, field mouse ext.....If we found what we would consider a intellecual peer to us that would be a different form of treatment as well. You dont treat your peers the same way you do your dog as an example. You might enjoy both your dog and your coworkers company....but you treat them differently because of there difference in intellect....The biggest two questions would be how capable we identify the aliens to us, and perhaps more importantly, how do they view our intelligence or capability to themselves. But you are likewise assuming hostility! However your point is taken and certainly Stephen Hawking thought that this idea was premature to a point; probably for similar reasons as your own. But if there were other non-benign, more technologcally advanced civilisations out there who wanted our resources or to destroy us then they would have been here and taken them and destroyed us as a civilisation long before now; but as we are quite capable of doing that ourselves anyway without their intervention, I feel that they would see us as very primitive in such a comparison and not worth bothering with. As Dr Vakoch says, they; if 'they' exist, basically already know we are here anyway! The Earth is a planet in a small, insignificant solar system which in turn is situated right on the very edge of an insignificant galaxy in the entire universe of trillions of others. Any 'intelligent' civilisation owes to itself the value of learning and developing from each other, communicating between each other and so on, this is fundamental to humanity's existence on the planet Earth, so why not outside our environs? And 'they' may very well be trying to communicate with us but we are not technologically advanced to recognise or interpret those communications or, they may be technologically inferior and can't respond? And of course it would be dangerous to assume we are the most intelligent life in the universe and bring a whole load of problems upon us so we also need to be prepared in case we are not! But equally we owe it to ourselves to search for other civilisations; we owe it to ourselves not to assume we are superior in the universe, we owe it to ourselves not to ignore the fact that in a universe of trillions of planets there could be others like us or not so much like us. And I can't think of a greater risk than living on a massive ball of rock floating in an infinite void and held up by mere gravity alone! So you don't need to say anything more at all, just open your mind more to possibilities, which is the more important thing!
They pointed earth out using pulsars sending waves our way, the time when they did it it was an amazing idea but pulsars can change their pointed ways of sending waves fast so most probably they wont find us the way it is on the golden plaque.

The big question is: is it possible for humans to communicate effectively with a different form of life?? So different that we can't possibly imagine what these differences are...perhaps they will never be accessible to us due to these undefined differences. Which doesn't't mean that they don't exist...it would be really naive to think that the species from other planets would remotely look and/or act like us. Hence, it might be simply impossible to establish the connection.
If they're intelligent, we can find ways to communicate. Transmitting the number Pi (which if they're in any way technological, they will know about) can at the very least establish we are intelligent and want to communicate.

We don't know the exact number, but by using enough data, we can statistically figure out approximately how many galaxies there are within the visible universe. This dataset does not change in the span of a lifetime, while weather patterns radically change in the span of hours or days due to a large number of unpredictable variables. Not sure why you would think our ability to predict weather indicates our ability to analyze galaxies.
