There are several qualities to this NZR railway layout that strike me: the incredible detail of the landscape which is dramatically distinct from expansive layouts I’ve seen from European and North American sets - the details capture the unique features of the NZ landscape and life; the livery of the locomotives and trains of carriages and rolling stock seem to accurately represent the features of NZR - whether or not they are historically accurate in minute detail is beside the point; the background panoramas of sorts merge with the foreground layout in a wonderfully realistic way, and; most impressively as a viewer I feel that I’m sitting close to the tracks as the various locomotives from steam to diesel, and the onetime ubiquitous rail cars pass by - and it transports me to a real place in a real time in my life where I was that train buff kid sitting near the tracks or on an overhead pedestrian bridge in Gore, Eastern Southland waiting for the steamed Southern Express or freight train to pass by. This is simply an impeccably presented layout. I’d love to see more! This is a case of “size doesn’t matter” - small or large this is the best detailed layout I’ve ever seen, 2:25 and there’s been many across the western world!
The detail in this NZR model railway layout is astounding! It captures everything that is true regarding the locomotives to the rolling stock to the NZ scenery in the back drops. Brilliant!
lol I've just seen this vid and ive seen you've been asked this a lot but, where did you get your steam engine from? I've been looking for ages but have never found one
Matty. Ken Cousins 09 8338929. He has stopped building them but he would be the guy to set you in the right direction. You could also try Neville 09 836375. He makes railcars etc. Best of luck.
Wow! Some great modelling work has gone into this. Takes me back to those days. .. (they are also running so smoothly) Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant!!!!! I love the models and the backscenes are so effective. Wow!
Great looking scenery and trains, looks like it must have been difficult to make all that rolling stock!
I always wondered what is was like in real life ……. Incredible ……. Malcolm Macrae retired VIP chauffeur
Cool! Sure got some heritage units! Ha ha!
Nice trains I'm from NZ so they make sense
Hi George.
Great looking layout. Where did you get your backscenes from, are they available to purchase?
please can you update what work has been done the layout
Hi was wondering how you make the toi toi plant
I'm assuming this is in HO scale. Which means the track is incorrect. HOn42 is also called Sn3 track. Time to convert???
do the loco's make the noises or did you add it afterwords?
Where did you get all the locomotives? I cant find alot of old steam and diesels
I bought most of them from West Auckland modeller Ken Cousuons
How much were they? and where did he get the sounds for them
I thought I saw an FM van which were not run at the time of the steam locos
angus Marshall hi I sometimes run the railway as all steam or sometimes as a Diesel layout hence theFM van.
Good one George
So So coool. Whis I had something like that.
What scale
I am v-e-r-y impressed! Are your models made from kits or are they scratch built? Kits of NZR rolling stock and locos are quite pricey.
I want kits too
Seems they are unavailable except for a D, A, ww with both types of boilers, wa and a double farlie (thats all I can dig up in stock)
I recommend switching to 1:120 I was s scale but after having a hard time with space and finding locos 1:120 is much easier
Where may I find these sets?
Neil these are made by people who belong to various modelling groups. Best to start by contacting www.nzmrg.org.nz
George
Any chance be able to veiw this ?
You were a Labour mp, George. And NZ Railways was your little playtoy, was'nt it George.
