How wonderful that you and Todd are encouraging your neighbor, he was so excited. So many children today have no idea where our food comes from. I subscribed for his encouragement
Thanks for the tips on canning pumpkins. We ended up with around 50 pumpkins this year 😁. I have discovered a great way to grow them. I make a 5 ft circle of chickenwire in the fall . I put landscape fabric on the inside and cardboard and start a hugel mound in it. Layers of corn stacks leaves and grass , then chickens bedding. I will add weeds, leaves , old tomato plants, sticks, wood chips or shredded paper. I keep layering it until it comes to the top. It sits all winter. It will sink to around 1/2 of what you started with. I save leaves and grass in plastic bags over the winter to add to my circles, I will add more chicken bedding, layer finished compost on the top then potting mix if needed. I use the top of this planter for strawberries and I plant the pumpkins plants or seeds at the base- the giant compost fertilizes the plants all season. You need about 20-30 ft around the hugel circles. I had 2 pumpkin plants at the base on opposite sides . Left me room to pick strawberries. I do this in my chicken yard. I had 3 circles and 6 plants that really produced. Last year we had 60 pumpkins. I gave a lot away. We and the chickens eat them all wInter. Happy growing everyone.
What a sweet young man!😊❤️👏🏼so many kids have utube channels on crazy stuff! Would be great to see kids that are being raised by homesteaders, to encourage a new generation!👍🏼you guys are awesome!
My family's favorite pumpkin meal is "Dinner in a Pumpkin". I have modified it to be similar to Shepherd Pie. Filling recipe is basically rice(cooked), mushrooms, mushroom soup, celery, onion, red bell peppers. Ground meat (we use venison) Soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar. Either stuff your pumpkin and bake, or I put in casserole dish and cover with mashed pumpkin and bake.
My husband and I love to watch you guys. He said that we are a lot alike so I needed to share my latest discovery when processing my pumpkins in NC. When making pumpkin butter and pumpkins chunks were cooked through, the juice in the crock pot was saved to be used as broth in other dishes. Used in Jambalaya and it was GREAT. Wanted to share this detail with you.
I have been making pumpkin soup and chili for a few years. A lot of folks think it's so odd, since pumpkin is for pies. Boy, are they missing out on some good tasting soup on those cool/cold days of fall and winter. I love how homesteading youtubers are sharing what to do with what you store. It is helping the person new to gardening or homesteading realize there is more than making sure your pantry/store room is full. It also gives those who aren't new to homesteading diffhomesteaders. Thank you for all you do. And special thank you for incouraging a enthusiastic young man to becoming a future homesteader.
Hi Rachel and Todd. Todd, thank you so much for giving people the opportunity to subscribe to RJ's channel. I am so happy myself. I will be seeing his channel and I will enjoy it as well. God Bless the meal you Rachel prepared, and I Bless RJ as well. He is so cute. Stay safe all. Maria. PS. I am still healing. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
😂 I'll keep eating new foods and healthy options with you Rachel. 🤣 Idunknow why Todd is reluctant. I ordered gete because of your channel. Can't wait to try! Good evening y'all! Thank you for sharing your life! ❤
Pumpkin soup is a staple winter dish here in Australia. I just do mine with some garlic, salt, pepper, sugar, (to taste) and curry powder fief off with pumpkin chunks at the beginning. A little chicken stock to cook the pumpkin till tender. Blend all together and top with cream or even plain yogurt. Yummo! This is the first time watching your channel as I’m canning pumpkin for the first time today. I’ve subscribed and will be watching lots more of your videos. Thanks for doing them.
I enjoy watching your video and I really agree with you that we have an opportunity to be up lifting on social media. There is so much that is bad on Facebook UA-cam and other social media sites thanks for trying to balance it out with positive and encouraging videos. That rare squash is so awesome hope next year you are able to get more to grow. Where did you get your seeds?
We love your channel! Thank you both for taking the time to educate folks. I just came across this video and after seeing Todd change his pumpkin-guts-utensil a few times, wanted to mention what I use. A canning lid works wonders to scoop out the seeds and such. Again, thanks for the great videos and take care!
Always good to see yawl!!!!! Cant believe people will buy pumpkins and just leave out on the front porch to rot. Hard to grow here in the central Texas heat so lot's of churches bring in and make a pumpkin patch to sell and raise money. We have grown but it's difficult. We always get a few and Rochelle will have me cut up and we can a freeze. I like to blanch a 2x4 piece and grill it, it's great! We subscribed to RJ's Farm and excided to help him. We are also thinking of starting our own page but I need to learn how to set it all up. Weather here is finally cool and the Fall/Winter garden is off to a good start. From our family to yours God Bless. Mike and Rochelle
Where did you find your Native American squash seeds at? Definitely interested in growing some due to my Native heritage. Sure do miss the days when children knew how to say yes and no Ma'am or Sir. The soup recipe sounded wonderful. 🍀
Rachel, you and Todd are great mentors. Russell is such a smart and amazing kid, I watched all his videos. U Tube camaraderie is giving me hope in America.
Thank ypu so much for all you share with us. About the unriped pumpkin; I've learned to use them as a pickle vegetable, shredding them as a squash or plane it and eat it on some crispbread with a sprinkle of black pepper. Really tasty. Many hugs to you both, I really appreciate to follow you. /Mia
I love your videos and love how you both work together to share knowledge with us. I'm super stoked that you are in my old stomping grounds in Michigan! God bless you both!!
I need to go watch the caramelized onion video, I didn't realize you could can then. We LOVE to add them onto our grilled cheese sandwiches after they're cooked. They're amazing on top of polenta, on top of focaccia bread, mixed into mashed potatoes 🤤
Thank you for this video, this is my second garden year, and I have been in my kitchen almost every day for the last two months 🤣I LOVE canning,Thanks to you Rachel 💕When I get a delivery ,my son asks me : ” more canning jars ?” 🤣🤣🤣but at least we know that we have good ,healthy by our own grown food in our pantry, and I will try your recipe tomorrow.Have a nice weekend 😊🇸🇪
I just love Russell, recommended a few channels to him including "Gardener Scott". I also told Scott about Russell, and he loves him and will be willing to help him learn about raised bed gardening. He is a master gardener in CO and taught at a garden school for kids. Your pumpkins are incredible. TFS
You can roast and then freeze dry the pumpkin to save on jars and prep time. Powder the results and you can still use the results for soups mashed etc.
Your pumpkin soup looked delicious. Excited to learn from you how the Gete-Okosomin tasted. Native Americans must’ve set great store on the taste given their centuries of hand pollination. Looks like RJ has reached over 1000 followers now! A super young man.
Russel is a cutie and very intelligent. So glad he is so happy for the shout out. The pumpkin soup and pork loin supper looked amazing. I've never canned pumpkin or grown it. But if I see any I will surely pick up a few and can them for future eats thanks to you. Awesome video! Thanks Todd for helping, you both compliment each other in the kitchen and in your daily lives and getaways to the off grid property.
WOW what a pumpkin, you should be very very proud of yourself. That soup looked amazing but unfortunately in our current temps there is no way I could eat hot soup hahaha. RJ is a wonderful little boy & his parents should be so proud of themselves, I have subscribed & am enjoying watching him. Cheers Denise- Australia
I had one pumpkin plant this year and ended up with 2 pumpkins both large and I just puree and froze for pumpkin pies. Next year I plan on growing more.
That was so cool for you guys to do this with the kid 🥰. Such an inspiration to see young people into homesteading. We subscribed to his Chanel after seeing him.
This was a fun video to watch. Nice to tryout a new pumpkin. It looks wonderful. Also I love it when you show us what you do with your canned products. Thank you to you both.
How wonderful that you and Todd are encouraging your neighbor, he was so excited. So many children today have no idea where our food comes from. I subscribed for his encouragement
Not only children but grown adults have not a clue on where/how food grows
Thank you for supporting Russel.💥
That phone call - so sweet! Another great video. :)
I feel Todd was hoping you were gonna say forget the big pumpkin lol
I am his 759th subscriber :) What a great kid, I am excited to see what he does with those birds of his :D
I was one that saw RJ on your channel. I went to his and subscribed. Such a small thing to do for so much sweet joy.
The pumpkin ,being underripe is fine...in Asia they eat them at all stages of development.
RJ is such a cute kid. It was so kind of you all to help him grow his channel.

Wow! Thank you. I struggle growing pumpkins. I wonder if this would work in a very dry/hot area?
Is the landscape fabric lining the circle or just at the bottom?
Qweeknee the hugelkulture (sp?) actually works really well at keeping moisture. Should be great for your area.
I'm glad to know I am not the only one that went on a cleaning frenzy!!😂😂😂😁
He has over a thousand now....awesome!!
Sometimes! 🤣🤣🤣 You guys are precious.

They say to salt brine them and rinse them helps with the roasting to but gives flavor I been wanting to try that and growing some pumpkin
I just subscribed too his channel,he is so cute, and he is over 800 subscribers....so excited for him too grow his channel
I just adore you guys. Angels among us
An old canning lid scraps out the stringy goop really well.
I got pumpkin down One regular jack-o-lantern pumpkin is 7 quarts. I will buy 3 medium pumpkins and get 21 quarts to last me all year.
I missing notifications ,I thought this am how come no videos . Glad I looked very sweet you are mentoring young man Russell . Love pumpkin !
From the angel of looking at you guys, when you took a pic of your soup, from my angel I could see a jack-o'-lantern 🎃
I've seen a hack using a flat canning lid to scrape out the seeds from the insides. Russell is a great kid.
I use a grapefruit spoon. The serrated edge makes it easy to scrape the goop next to the flesh.
My husband and I love to watch you guys. He said that we are a lot alike so I needed to share my latest discovery when processing my pumpkins in NC. Those white pumpkins are just gorgeous!
Those chunky seeds look a lot like the seeds in a pink banana squash. They are sooo yummy when roasted!
I’ll definitely head over to RJs Farm to subscribe! I must have missed that video…I’ll go back and check it out.

Canned pumpkin is so good. I use it in pies and bread and just plain ole butter salt and pepper.
Smart women ! Pumpkin should not be wasted ! It will be delicious ! I have been canning up squash and pumpkin like crazy! Such a versatile vegetable !
He'll be at 1000 by Saturday ❤
I like the seeds roasted every bit as good as the squash/pumpkin flesh.
Yay Russel
I made pumpkin pie with carrots. Same spices canned carrots mashed eggs and evaporated milk.
Now that you have a freeze dryer you oughta try freeze drying it rind It might be great as a thickener

I have huge Hubbard squash. I'm a small person so I drop my squash on the concrete to crack it open! Amazing help. I trim it into nice piece.
Sooo precious ❤️🙏

Great video! All I could think was that Rachel was so brave wearing a white shirt- I would have been as orange at the pumpkin. 😂
I was thinking the same lol
Wow, that big white one says it's machete time. I love all kinds of pumpkin and squash.
We love your channel! Thank you both for taking the time to educate folks. Todd “ Not everyday” 🤣 cracked me up! Soup looks delicious. I’m headed over to check out RJ channel.
Your pumpkins look great.
I saw somewhere on UA-cam to use a used canning lid to scrap out pumpkin guts. It has a curved sharp edge that works well.
Rachel, you and Todd are great mentors. Russell is such a smart and amazing kid, I watched all his videos. U Tube camaraderie is giving me hope in America.
Best part of fall is the yummy soups, chilies, and stews! Mmmmm!

I still have some canned pumpkin from a few years ago I just might use in pumpkin soup! I’m so excited for Russell! That boy brought a tear to my eye.
I save the seeds from pumpkins and soak them in salt water and roast them for a snack!! Yummy!
I missed the episode where RJ was on but I just subbed. I am excited about your soup and pumpkins!
You can roast and then freeze dry the pumpkin to save on jars and prep time. Powder the results and you can still use the results for soups mashed etc.
I laughed at Todd when he talked about skinning and gutting the pumpkin.
#thingsonlyahunterwouldsay
Just subscribed to RJs farm . You guys are great people and I’m glad to see Russel is too! Great video and love seeing pellet smokers being used .
