  • Thanks to ESS Promotions and Icons of Wrestling Convention here is my exclusive Apter Chat with the man who teamed with Chief Jay Strongbow and had a terrific singles career -- Jules Stongbow (the wrestler not the booker at the Olympic Auditorium). This is a totally unedited interview.

"I did all the work, he got all the glory"...yep, that sounds like typical a Jay Strongbow move. Always liked Jules. And he is right about the territories. They put themselves out of business for the most part.

Oh boy.....what a flashback of memories!! I remember Chief Jay and Jules ...The Strongbow Brothers. He is absolutely correct...they had the big feuds with Fuji & Saito and The Wild Samoans (which they chased both for the titles), and to a lesser extent The Moondogs (I believe. I always went for the heels so I hated the Strongbows, but they were great. Good to see Jules in good health (seemingly) and with no regrets. But Jules....get some better fitting glasses!! Geez! LOL.

This is outstanding! And Jules Strongbow is 100% correct. The current generation doesn't have near the staying power of the previous ones. That's got a lot to do with why those wrestlers who paved the way and were big in the 70s, 80s, and 90s are still more celebrated, revered, and remembered than the current crop of talent are or ever will be. Plus, the style they work today is more like a Flying Wallendas act than anything that resembles pro wrestling. They do nonstop highspots, most of it makes little to no sense, there's no psychology or less-is-more in today's product, and they're all killing one another with crazy moves and seem more interested in popping the boys than making a lasting impression on the fans. Today moves like the Piledriver and the DDT have been turned into transitional moves that mean nothing and it seems like it takes a tank or a bloody wrecking ball to finish an opponent off. Its all been bastardized in the modern era and they've ruined the magic formula, sadly. Thank the pro wrestling gods for men like Bill Apter and Jules Strongbow and that entire era of professional wrestling. It still holds up as better than anything we're seeing today.

Wow, him able to recall, down to the day and year, that he last saw you Bill, was amazing.
Him and Jay were awesome in the ring.
Also Jules isnt wrong about the difference between them (the old wrestlers that actually worked), and the people wrestling now (more about their gimmick instead of wrestling), it may be more about safety now, than the realism it was back then. 🤷
Thanks Bill, for finally locating "the Jules". Lol 😆

More about safety? The wrestlers of today are killing each other with moves that are dangerous and mean nothing. It's far worse today and the constant flow of injuries in AEW especially spells that out. It's all become overkill. Less used to be more.
