I've just seen this today (I know I'm too late 😅) And was astounded with her rendition 💯. Watching this while peacefully having breakfast was a TERRIBLE idea, I ended up SOBBING instead 😂. So for those who read the comments first before watching, YOU'RE WARNED 😂. She'll surely dig up the wanted/unwanted emotions within you (which is a good thing). That's just show how heavenly/magnificent performer she is. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 to this wonderful human.
Lea Salonga is such a wonderful singer; in the 10th anniversery of Les Mis - she is simply stunning as Eponine.. this song is beautiful in her voice, now I really want to sing it too! =P
there's no emotion in her voice... great voice, but all the emotion is in her physical actions... there's power in her voice, but no pain, no hurt or passion
This is from the musical Chess. A great Cold War/star-crossed lovers story and some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard in a Broadway play. It no longer runs and is hard to find videos of, but you can read the synopsis on Wikipedia. The music was so popular when the play debuted that some of the songs topped the billboard charts. You might end up recognizing some other songs.
I love all her performances; the music, the voice, the soul/emotions are all there. She is truly a multi-talented singer/stage performer/actress etc. Don't forget she won a Laurence Olivier Award as Best Actress in London, England and won a Tony Best Actress Award for her performance in Miss Saigon. She is UP THERE.
you're dead wrong on your last statement. it is in fact the opposite. lea is well-known in the theater world as having this angelic,crystal-clear , full-tone voice thats a pleasure to listen to. she's a broadway elite & have quite an impressive body of work to her credit. she's even a disney princess twice over if u know what i mean.
I love this performance but Helen Sjöholm's version (the Swedish one) is just incredible. I love that even though I don't understand the words haha This one from Lea is great too
I just put this in a Broadway review and had the leading man sing it- about the other leading man- it was beautiful and wove a secret to the show- which the audience was in on....made the leading lady's songs all that more tragic- cause we knew the he she loved was in love with the other he.....hot.
for me leah did an amazing job here. relaying the best emotions for this song. and she dont need to exaggerate the emotions just to please the audience
*GASP* Cool! I didn't know about Pochahontas! I love that movie... Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon, or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned . . . ?
whoa. def my fave performance of this song so far. im auditioning for eponine from les mis in my theatre companys production of it this spring, and im using someone elses story as my audition song. its been hard to try to get down the right facial expressions when singing the song, but im gunna study off of this video and steal a bit of technique from salonga. she does it perfectly imo. :)
There will be those who are born with voices better than Lea's, but theirs always lack Lea's ability to tell a story through her singing. I love her distinct crystal-clear voice and how it gives me goosebumps. My highest respect to this woman.
She does go sharp, but very briefly (for about a second), before she hits the note proper. I was specifically listening for it (as I read this comment before she got to the end of the song), but it really is a minor wobble!
A soubrette voice is light, with a bright, sweet timbre and the term can also refer to a soprano voice type. However, many young singers start out as soubrettes and then as they age, their voice becomes more develop and they can be classified into another voice type. They could be a light lyric soprano or a lyric coloratura soprano.
I think Lea Salonga is an exquisite performer, but I have to agree with douchehater on this one. This is a showcase performance, not a characterization. Not that it always has to be, but for me it's what makes it interesting.
@doobeedoo58 Thank you for putting me in the same league as Lea. Although she is my age, I consider her to be a huge influence on my interpretation of Broadway librettos. I'm not sure I could even carry that lady's bags, but I thank you for the compliment :) the video of my Miss America performance is posted on my UA-cam Channel....it is not my favorite rendition, but it is the one most remember.
What do you mean? Lea Salonga is a tony award winning actress from Broadway and West End. She's most known for originating the role of Kim from Miss Saigon. Why do you think she has no experience in musical theater?
although a lot of singers have sung this song with their beautiful voices this is so far the most soulfull! so expressive! she didn't just sang the song, she became the character in the musical.
i agree w/ Felicity, it's just a matter of taste & opinion really. i like helen's version for she has a nice singing voice no doubt... but i like lea's more simply bec. lea has this sweeter, angelic tone in her voice. no wonder that lea's resume. body of works is much more impressive than helen's... now, that is my opinion!
@annief31 actually in this version, Lea did have a bit of problem staying on pitch (that C#) and Liz was very much on pitch during her performance. Granted Lea my be a great broadway performer and actor, but she does have a bit of trouble staying on pitch during her singing...
sorry, but looks like you didnt understand the song itself. If u internalize he song. the singer (broadway actress/singer) is relaying someone else's story. in my opinion, Lea's facial expression is like shes wondering and confused (like shes just observant from the first part) from the first part of the song (which truly complements the song), and then slowly she knew it was her.
I've just seen this today (I know I'm too late 😅) And was astounded with her rendition 💯. Watching this while peacefully having breakfast was a TERRIBLE idea, I ended up SOBBING instead 😂.

I wish people would stop comparing all these wonderful singers! They each bring something unique to the song and each perform it beautifully
after not hearing this song for like 4 years it's just that much more powerful and beautful
Lea's voice is absolutely flawless-- love her singing one of my favorite Mezzo Soprano showtunes of all time! Beautiful...
Lea Salonga is such a wonderful singer; in the 10th anniversery of Les Mis - she is simply stunning as Eponine..
this song is beautiful in her voice, now I really want to sing it too! =P

Oh, man. Her belting is just so ridiculously natural and flawless!!! I have voice envy. Love her!!!!
i was in the crowd here...lea is truly one talented Filipino artist!
I love her so much! She has the kind of voice that would really fit a Disney Princess (see Mulan). I love Lea!
She is fantastic!!! I love the clarity and perfectly timed vibrato
there's no emotion in her voice... great voice, but all the emotion is in her physical actions... there's power in her voice, but no pain, no hurt or passion
One of the loveliest versions of this song I've ever heard.
... whoa. that's absolutely stunning.
why do i have shivers? ... oh yeah!! its cuz she's amazing!
seen it hundreds times, still love it
According to music critics, if Lea sings a song, you can say THAT THE SONG HAS BEEN SUNG!
I Love how she feels the songs she sings-beautiful!
Brava! I remember seeing Lea in Miss Saigon in London back in '89 - if anything her voice has matured. A very talented lady, still very pretty too.
Lea is amazing, what a voice!

US TOO
I love all her performances; the music, the voice, the soul/emotions are all there.
She is truly a multi-talented singer/stage performer/actress etc. Don't forget she won a Laurence Olivier Award as Best Actress in London, England and won a Tony Best Actress Award for her performance in Miss Saigon. She is UP THERE.
YES SHE IS
she really sings w/ emotion, very pretty voice to go with it too.
I am so moved by this perfect performance !

i am so touched by this song and its rendition. bravo!
I love this performance but Helen Sjöholm's version (the Swedish one) is just incredible. I love that even though I don't understand the words haha This one from Lea is great too
Riveting and magnificent. Truly Splendid
I wish I had a quarter of Lea Salonga's talent.

Very beautiful rendition. Amazing.
Gorgeous, stunning, a true class act! BRAVO!
This is unbeliveable and she looks so gorgeous!
I just put this in a Broadway review and had the leading man sing it- about the other leading man- it was beautiful and wove a secret to the show- which the audience was in on....made the leading lady's songs all that more tragic- cause we knew the he she loved was in love with the other he.....hot.
Don't get me wrong, I love Kerry Ellis' version as well, but Lea Salonga simply ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF!!!!! She's so great!!!!

So...how'd the solo go? :)
I love Lea Salonga.
Nicely done *clappity clap clap* Love that song, favorite from Chess. Easy pick, but sometimes the right choice is easy to see.
There is a concert version from 2008 that is definitely worth seeing.
UA-cam her singing "I'd Give my Life for You" from MISS SAIGON. Looks for a stage version.. its from over 20 years ago.
Singing this my music coursework.... wish I could sing it anywhere near as well as her!
Love this song.
*GASP* Cool! I didn't know about Pochahontas! I love that movie... Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon, or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned . . . ?

I love her facial expressions...so entertaining
A true Angel Voice
cool song!
Oooooooh, okay. I don't know my Disney princesses! Ha. No matter what though, I love Lea.
Perfect rendition

Very difficult song to carry from Chess.. both in range and in emotion. Well done by Ms. Salonga@
i love the meaning of the song
I love her in Cinderella (Shanghai Stage)
i really like this song. i so can relate to it. bravo lea! :)
I love Lea, and her voice is perfect, but there isn't enough pain in her interpretation of this song.
oh dear she went sharp on the last note for a sec there! =O
There will be those who are born with voices better than Lea's, but theirs always lack Lea's ability to tell a story through her singing. I love her distinct crystal-clear voice and how it gives me goosebumps. My highest respect to this woman.

The song is from the musical "Chess". It's written by Björn Ulveaus, Benny Andersson and Tim Rice ;)
i wish i was her. wow.

However, many young singers start out as soubrettes and then as they age, their voice becomes more develop and they can be classified into another voice type. lea's rendition of this song is the best....the best
This is the best rendition I've heard of this song. Bravo, Salonga!
I think Lea Salonga is an exquisite performer, but I have to agree with douchehater on this one. This is a showcase performance, not a characterization. Not that it always has to be, but for me it's what makes it interesting.

AND SHE SINGS POCAHONTAS AND LES MIS AND ANNIE AND MISS SAIGON AND FLOWER DRUM SONGS
no problem! :) ye im from sweden.. she is famous here yes.. check out all of the vids of her here. some are quite recent! :)
I think she's way better than Helen. She sings with so much emotion. = )
I love you Lea! XD
hands down best version ever!!! xxx
Amazing! Way better than EVERYONE who ever played this part in the musical.
The grave mistake you've done was saying she's Not There Yet without knowing the artist's background
@ocanna92. Tiny bit sharp sharp not flat and her voice show vulnerability at the end. She's wonderful.
this is a really good version :)
everyone should check out kerry ellis' version from the chess concert in the albert hall in London- AMAZING
although a lot of singers have sung this song with their beautiful voices this is so far the most soulfull! so expressive! she didn't just sang the song, she became the character in the musical.

Lea is a nine! Helen is 10❤️
i harassed the replay button, sorry.
i sang this in 6th grade!! OMJ!
@annief31 actually in this version, Lea did have a bit of problem staying on pitch (that C#) and Liz was very much on pitch during her performance. Granted Lea my be a great broadway performer and actor, but she does have a bit of trouble staying on pitch during her singing...

I would listen to Lea sing the phone book.
Backwards.
