Thank you for the video!! I just bought a 70s beetle as my first car and I’m learning a lot on how to deal with engine problems with your videos. My beets recently died on me while I was on a date because the generator stopped working😅
Thank you so much for this! I've been tracing wires and connectors to check why my Gen light isn't coming on with key on, even checked the bulb and connectors in the speedo cluster too. I had no idea that if you take the Field wire off and ground it then the light would work to verify all the wiring is good. If I would have seen this 1st then it would have saved me 2 days work. Easy verification of my alternator being bad.
What is the best way to determine if the alternator is internally regulated or has one under the seat? I might have a senrio where someone has upgraded to an internally regulated alternator but left he reg in place under the seat, is this a thing?
Bravo ,well done ,how about stall stutter on a 1978 FI uber beetle, these are the bosche revenge lock alter nator with big screw drive to boss on alternator.
What to look for on the volt-drop test please? What are good and bad numbers? (I'm presuming an appreciable drop indicates current flowing from or to battery, but how much is desirable?). Thx
Electric current will always flow the path of least resistance so your meter reading will indicate the loss of power on that circuit from component to component. 0.5V to 0.75V is acceptable on the earth side and 0.5V on the live feed side. Hope this helps & thanks for subscribing!
Have been searching for that special wrench you hold or lock the generator pulley with but no result. Have to search for tha right/correct name and I am not what it is called. What do you call that in englis and where is it orderablevquickest? Thanks for your help. And very good videos of course.
Hi, ah sorry about that, here is the correct link directly to the tool. www.justkampers.com/c-spanner-tool-for-dynamo-and-alternator-pulley.html Hope that helps :)

it was jealous !
@DanTheManIOM It's just a piece of junk like all VW's. Sorry I traded my 1978 F150 for a 70 Bug. Worst mistake ever.

Thanks for the video. Be handy to know where you're putting the probes when you check the output of the alternator.

I'm a little confused by the + - circuit test with the lights on. What determines good or bad?

Thanks. Though what would be the issue if the Voltage is too high from the alternator. 16v-19v when revving the engine?
Hi, the issue is that it would over charge your battery and cause damage. That issue is normally caused by a voltage regulator fault. Hope that helps.

@@justkampers Can you please point us to something equivalent in the USA that would do the job?
