MerStede broke something in me lol. It was so in-character for Ed, and so perfectly matched for Stede's overdramatic reunion fantasy in the beginning but also it was just so much 🤣
Also something I noticed that in my opinion is really important is that Ed wanted to live before he heard Stede's voice! He had to be pushed instead of jumping down the cliff, he was already struggling with the ropes, ... basically that he found his own desire to live even before hearing Stede's voice. Stede gave him that strength to make it back, but Ed wanted to live, he saved himself and valued himself! And I find this so so important because you can't live solely for someone else and it is so important thst they made sure we know that it's not just stede that wants ed to live, but Ed doesn't want to actually die!
Yes. If Ed had felt certain that he wanted to die, and not just that his suffering was untenable and something had to change, he had the opportunity to do it himself. It was because he wasn't sure that he kept trying to get someone else to take that decision out of his hands.
Realised some things while writing my first reply to this (past reflections, not current mental state dw) and UA-cam is not the place, but I will say this; not wanting to die isn't the same as wanting to live. And yes living for one person isn't healthy for either person, but if that's what it takes to keep fighting for something healthier, then that's what it takes Edited because it's late AF here and words are hard lmao
YES to this. He was already conflicted - he couldn’t deal with the pain he was feeling and he wanted it to stop (and thought that unaliving himself was the only way out of the pain), but he still didn’t actually want to die. That’s why he kept trying to push other people to unalive him for him - first Izzy, then the crew, and in the end Hornigold. But Ed, at his core, did not want to die. As you said, Stede just gave him the strength to power-through the hurt and bring himself back. That’s why it’ so important that Ed and MerStede didn’t touch. It was the *presence* of Stede that allowed Ed to *pull himself* back to life. And that distinction is SO damn important.
Feel so sad for Stede seeing his beautiful ship that he put all his dreams into in such a state. I’m sure personally betraying the incredibly prosperous and powerful Zheng Yi Sao, queen of a whole pirate army, will have no big consequences in the future. “How many broken-hearted pirates we have on this ocean?” “You can’t do this to me with Kate Bush!”
the most tear-jerking, heartfelt moment where stede is telling ed he’s waiting for him, he loves him, and then… MerStede😭😭😭😭 i love this fucking show😭😭😭
This show is so incredible. I went into the first season knowing and loving Rhys and Taika's previous work and thinking a fun pirate comedy would be something I enjoyed but only watched once. Here I am, having watched the first season a dozen times, having watched these first three episodes of season 2 twice, and in absolute awe with the writer's and actor's ability to so perfectly balance emotionally devastating and poignant scenes with the goofiest shit you've ever witnessed. I need to clarify that when I say "goofy shit" I don't mean the merman Stede scene. I've seen a lot of people use the word "cringe" to describe it, which really disappoints me! Yes, it's supposed to inject some fun quirkiness into an otherwise really heavy scene, but it wasn't meant to be "cringe". I can't help but feel like if you peel that word back you'd find some internal shame or embarrassment surrounding queer fantasies/fanfiction tropes being laid bare on screen for all to see. Anyway, cringing is dumb and as soon as those fuckers remember how to feel whimsy it's all over for them, lol.
As someone who felt "cringe" at this I can confirm its all internal shit. (And tbh, most cringe feelings stem from personal insecurities) I laughed because I knew of the merstede trend in the fandom and was blown away that they actually did it, this show doesn't straddle the line between ridiculous and ernest, it goes full tilt in both directions simultaneously! In the BEST way So despite feeling cringe I was never against the scene, but I have since realised... if it was a conventionally attractive 20 something in the mermaid costume then whether it was cringe or not wouldn't even be a discussion. There's a lot of internal bias that tells us it's weird but that's something we can acknowledge and grow from
@@hazell1304I just wanna applaud you for being able to recognise that within yourself. That’s f*cking strong. We all have our own hang-ups that colour how we see the world, and the only way through it is to recognise it. So, sorry to take this so seriously, but I just really appreciate when people are willing to look at how they view the world and acknowledge how it’s forming their view of reality 🩷
Wait, we´re getting another one today??? Dude. The end. Kate Bush + Ed´s brain making Stede a merman murdered me in the BEST WAY. The tears were real. Impeccable madness. I love it so, so much.
My favorite thing this show does is balance the emotional and the absurd so well. Like, the underwater scene was so emotional and serious and stressful and then it just gets the LEGS knocked out from under it (in the best way) with Mer-Stede while still being emotional! Like never has a show made me cry but also absurdity laugh in the same moment??? It's a great balance.
I'm not usually a conspiracy theory person, but I'm convince Ed's coma sequence was laced with way more metaphor than the surface level 'I hate myself' stuff. Or it's foreshadowing, or Ed was hearing everything around him. 1. Ed 'wakes up' on a beach. Izzy says they deserted Ed on a beach - and he says it right in the captain's cabin, which seems to be above where they were hiding Izzy. That's why Ed could smell the rotting leg. 2. The pig has Stede's hair color. Hornigold says 'Hey Ruthie (Hebrew name meaning 'friend'), if you're not going to help, then at least keep up.' That can easily be a reference to how useless and reactionary Stede is right now. 3. There's a black haired pig in the pen with the blond/ginger pig later. 4. Ed wake's up again and feels paralyzed. Like he can feel his real body that won't move. 5. Hornigold keeps talking about soup. The crew in the real world is fed soup after being rescued. 6. Hornigold says "I know you've probably got some bad memories of your captain in there" when he's feeding Ed. Maybe it's just the first hint that it's not real. But I think maybe someone was feeding Ed broth irl. 7. There's an emphasis on the color blue in 'purgatory'. Might just be a continuation of the Ed=black/blue Stede=amber theme, but they focus on the strings of blue rocks in one shot. I think this is about the indigo trade. 8. All of Ed's favorite things are physical comforts that are easily associated with Stede. 9. The 'Stede is a lighthouse' metaphor continues with Ed seeing a light through the darkness. 10. End scene confirms Ed can hear and feel somewhat while he's in the coma. Things I suspect have meaning: 1. Hornigold says 'open up for the cargo ship' while trying to feed Ed. Foreshadowing cargo ships? A childhood memory? Just silliness? 2. Woven things. I'm probably reaching, but Hornigold's 'camp' has a bunch of woven/braided things, and then they zoom in on the woven sandal. Could be a unity metaphor. The trailers heavily foreshadow the 'End of the Golden Age of Piracy' plotline and Izzy says piracy is about 'belonging to something'. I think there's gonna be a 'united we stand' situation when the Republic of Pirates is threatened. And since Hornigold is supposed to be Ed, then Ed is the one who weaves things together. I'm thinking an eventual team up with Zheng Yi Sao. Maybe season 3. 3. Why is Hornigold fiddling with a scrap of cloth during the live or die conversation? 4. What does the 'staff' represent? Why did Hornigold tell Ed to pick it up? Is this a simple pun? Staff = employees = crew? Seems like Ed was hearing everything around him and is intuitively putting together clues that something bad is on the horizon. The show has shown several times how clever he is - reading weather patterns, inventing fuckeries, knowing when Frenchie is lying. It's possible he's only just noticing because he's been too distracted by his depression spiral. You hear him say in the trailer 'Something's wrong. Feels like a storm is coming'.
oh you are feeding us well!! that final scene made me lose my absolute mind. rhys darby's acting will be the death of me. and the way ed's face lights up when he sees merman stede... ahhhhhhhhhhh god
SO many feelings. It's like the Miracle Max scene in "Princess Bride" but with a merman. Also, remembering the moment in 1.3 when Stede's life is flashing before his eyes, and the people he's seeing (father, wife) aren't a comfort to him, but the person who cuts him down and saves his life is. When Ed's life is flashing before his eyes, it's all the good parts, and it's all Stede.

I was looking forward to your reaction of this episode. MerStede is the greatest concept David has thought up in that brilliant head of his, and the fact that it was entirely practical makes it even better. They used 5kg of glitter on that tail!! Anyway I adore this show for giving us as many fanfic tropes as it can possibly cram in.
The mermaid trope is in fanfic because it's heavily tied into queer fantasy (a fantastical underwater world away from normal society, and 'humans' will kill them if they get caught). I love David for giving us this, but I don't think we can give him credit for the whole concept. Plus this trope is already more common in the OFMD fanfic than other fandoms - for the obvious reason that they're on the ocean, and Ed mentioned that being 'massaged to death by mermaids' would be a cool death.
@@sybariticcupboardrat3763 I wasn't saying it was something David thought up himself whole-cloth - that's why I said they were cramming in as many fanfic tropes as possible. And I know that the mermaid is an allegory for queer fantasy - you're preaching to the choir. :)

Most relatable reaction. That last scene omfg AMAZING, so beautiful and emotional but still that funny twist wow. Love this show and love your channel ❤
Yes yes yes, love you calling it for the end of this ep! augh! when Izzy says 'we cannot let this crew suffer anymore for our mistakes' ...my heart!! augh, Con said Izzy was gonna have growth this season, but really, this is so much so fast!! heh, nodding along with Stede sussing out the error of not following his own saying...our crew was nodding at the same time... yeah, it's Gravy Basket time!! i felt like the first hint at Ed being in a near-death state was when Ben flipped him over on the beach and half his face was covered in dark sand. The whole half light/half dark symbolism... Your shock and then cheering for Stede's sneaky plan! and then i chuckled at your heartbroken pirates comment, ah yes, we are in for it this season. showrunner David Jenkins did say something about wrecking our 'ships' this season and then the rock drop and mer-Stede and Kate Bush and HANDS!! and..augh! it's so much *sigh* and yep, staggered eps are good, heh. be well! Happy recovery from all that! see you in the next one!
They really dialed up the hyper emotional moment and then hit me with the MerStede and I choked a litttle, but I still wept. And I still need to be put in a medically induced coma until Thursday.
when Samba Shutte (Roach) tweeted "Good Luck, you'll need" or smth of the sort....and the cast all insinuated that we wouldn't survive the first three eps...yeah...I get it now. The parallels from Stede entering his "home/house" in S1E10 and seeing his picture erased and this, now, entering the ship and seeing himself erased, but so much more violently...only this MEANS something to him...the writing is so good! and the "jeff is trying to improvise another business idea with a buddy except the buddy won't play this time unlike Stede" - heartbreaking. Someone needs to set up some proper therapy.. Buttons? Olu? Because boy, the've all got SO many issues! Those last three minutes will stay with me for a long, long time. The acting, the timing, the writing, the music, the cinematography - it's so heartbreakingly beautiful ...I'mma take a few days to recover from that shit Absolutely...no.fucking.words.
Thank you for all the super quick uploads! I'm really into this season and I don't know if I can wait for the rest of the episodes to come out but it's nice to see you react to them.
Omg I feel so represented It's been 4 days and I still can't process that ending 😭❤️ This show just keeps getting better and better! Can't wait to see what happens next and to experience it with you too!
I was NOT expecting the mermaid, gotta say. 🤣 A week is too long, I am not okay with a week. I need more of all of these broken, interesting people NOW.
I didn't knoe that song was from Kate Bush but I absolutely love it! I need it to become as popular as that song from Stranger Things cause the moment was iconic
you are not the only person who blue-screened at that moment. my reaction was pretty much exactly the same as yours, complete with distressed hand-waving and forgetting to breathe.
So happy to see this, I don’t have anyone to watch this show with, this is my happy place, it’s going to be fun seeing where they go with the romantic tropes next!
Yes. We know. We all know the feeling. We've been there. I'm not okay. I'm not okay. And d'ya wanna know what I'm thinking? The next Mermay will be INIMITABLE.
Oh my darling, if you are a slut for “Come back to me” moments, you need to find the film “Somewhere in Time” with a young Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour if you haven’t seen it. That’s the entire premise of the film.
I might be about to screw with your 7 working days to recover. Title of the next episode is "Fun and Games". Other people: YAY COMEDY Me and my angst loving brain: Isn't there a saying that's to do with fun and games *does a Google search* Aha! "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt". 💔
MerStede broke something in me lol. It was so in-character for Ed, and so perfectly matched for Stede's overdramatic reunion fantasy in the beginning but also it was just so much 🤣

The acting, the timing, the writing, the music, the cinematography - it's so heartbreakingly beautiful ...I'mma take a few days to recover from that shit
Absolutely...no.fucking.words.
your reaction was mine exactly "i'm a slut for come back to me moments" ME TOO GIRLIE
Thank you for all the super quick uploads! I'm really into this season and I don't know if I can wait for the rest of the episodes to come out but it's nice to see you react to them.
Omg I feel so represented
It's been 4 days and I still can't process that ending 😭❤️
This show just keeps getting better and better!
Can't wait to see what happens next and to experience it with you too!
MerStede made me feel the Aww as his face appeared swimming up but they completely had me busting as he bobs like a cork inches from Ed’s face.
Kate bush songs made so much epic moments, first stranger things and now this 😭🙏
@karualicekilian9733 ......and they're not even my favourite KB songs. "Hello Earth" was once used years ago on Miami Vice.
I have cried exactly twice this year and both have been to scenes with that kate bush song.
I was NOT expecting the mermaid, gotta say. 🤣 A week is too long, I am not okay with a week. I need more of all of these broken, interesting people NOW.
So Stede saved his crew, even Izzy, and brought Ed back from the dead, he’s our gay superhero
I didn't knoe that song was from Kate Bush but I absolutely love it! I need it to become as popular as that song from Stranger Things cause the moment was iconic
@0912sooli Off the album "The Sensual World" 1989.
watched the new episodes in my house with like, 8 of us there, lemme tell you we were RIOTINGGG at the end
you are not the only person who blue-screened at that moment. my reaction was pretty much exactly the same as yours, complete with distressed hand-waving and forgetting to breathe.
Heads up, each episode of this season has a post-credits scene!
Ahhh I'm soooo stoked for the next part! I loved your reactions. Your face towards the end was exactly my own reaction too!!
Yep. Crazy. Amazing. Love your reactions!
the fact that you thought this series wasnt for you
am i the only one who doesn't see 2x02 video on the channel? there isn't episode 1 either, but i already watched it
The playlist shows them as “unavailable”. Maybe a copyright strike
@@ktburger659 probably 😩
I’m late to the party but I am loving your reactions. Feeling it!
There is always an extra scene after credits!
IT'S SOOOO GOOD!!!! 😭😭😭❤
I have so much joy out of this😂🎉❤
Aw i missed eps 2 before it came down! I was asleeeeep!
Did the other ones get taken down?
They're back up!
Oh my darling, if you are a slut for “Come back to me” moments, you need to find the film “Somewhere in Time” with a young Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour if you haven’t seen it. That’s the entire premise of the film.
Have you seen _Deadloch?_ Archie from this show is in it. I think you might enjoy it.
now i want to rewatch xfiles
Beautiful.
Your playlist is a little broken; cracked me up to see that critical role thumbnail tho, hello Taliesin!
Umm . . . S2E1 and S2E2 reactions are not up on your channel. I saw the first one, but didn't get to the second.
@gaywatch As a fellow ‘“come back to me”-moments-slut’ (& bi gal), can you recommend any good ‘come back to me’-moments?? 😍😩❤️
2:20 Polyamory!
Re the wisdon from Izzy, him saving the crew the episiode before that wasnt exactly stupid ;)
that mermaid scene was the absolute gayest thing i’ve ever seen and i can’t get over it
me: izzy izzy izzy izzy izzy *gentlebeard* izzy izzy izzy izyy izzy
I might be about to screw with your 7 working days to recover. Title of the next episode is "Fun and Games".
Other people: YAY COMEDY
Me and my angst loving brain: Isn't there a saying that's to do with fun and games *does a Google search* Aha! "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt". 💔
