  • We’re back! In this video we talk about what we’ve been up to and what we are working on now. Our latest project involves using a permaculture technique to help our mesquite shrubs grow into mesquite trees 🌳 We want to utilize our mesquite trees as the basis for our desert food forest. Watch this video to find out why!

Yes, supposedly, you can grind those mesquite beans into flour. We tried it and it is such a pain that we decided to leave them for the bunnies, the squirrels, and the quail. Watching the wildlife is much more fun!

We’re lucky to have some local mills that handle that for us but we still leave some for the critters because we love seeing them too.

I love what you’re doing. It’s gonna be interesting to see what a good rain does to what you’ve done already. Cheers!

Those rocks you raked to make a gully are actually really good mulch!

The rocks will be our backup if there’s not enough wood mulch. Thanks

Brilliant discussion and tutorial on boomeranging the existing Mesquite on your homestead. Digging and pruning. Making a miracle. Thumbs up!

I did not know the pod shells were edible! Such great info.

Velvet with spotted pods, Western honey, honey (from the east (someplace :) ), and screw bean. South of the border is Julian, a shrub with bitter pods.
Plant mesquite in the garden like the old-times (American Indian). It's great to prevent erosion, for shade, and nitrogen. We used to pick a lot of chiltepin from under mesquite.
Retainer dams, yo! We used to have to repair them in pastures on the range. The old woman said most were from the pre-columbian era. If you see a patch of agave along a dry creek bed and the remains of a wall, that's likely one.

We’re planning on planting some Palo Verde but I hadn’t heard about the ironwood’s. I’ll check them out. Thanks

I thought the Palo Verde (green bark and branches) were poisonous. Not supposed to use their wood to cook with. Just wanted to put that out for further research.

In Rainwater Harvesting by Brad Lancaster he shows examples of people using these techniques all over the world. It’s pretty amazing what can be accomplished with some good design and smart earthworks.
