Never been to Shanghai; it looks like I should pay a visit soon. Spotless clean, so much great food, very orderly everywhere. Look at the air quality. It looks so transparent. China has improved so much over the past few decades.
It’s amazing how clean energy has cleaned up the air in big cities. Most have around 50% EVs now, and all the scooters are electric too. The streets are so quiet compared to our streets here in Canada-it adds to China’s chill vibe. Thanks for watching, more videos are coming.
WOW what a view from your hotel room. People are moving in orderly fashion even when you are getting on and off the subway trains. This is so much better than 15 years ago when I was in China for the first time. The subway station looks so futuristic and like an modern art museum. This makes the infrastructures look like a third world country. The city is so clean and the air quality seems so much better now. John seems like he is from a small town person who is so fascinated by everything he sees in Shanghai. Yes, I got that feeling too during my first trip in Shanghai 15 years ago. It is hard for someone from a Canadian city or American city to imagine the scale of amount of people for any given time on the streets. But despite all the crowds and traffic, I felt very safe and peace in China. OMG that sugar candy looks so amazing. That restaurant is typical Hong Kong style fusion cuisine. All dishes look so delicious but a lot of calories. What I like Shanghai about is that it has the West and East, expensive and cheap, excitement and relax. Come on, $45 CAD for all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast in a decent hotel? That is a bargain. In Canada, you will not get that deal anywhere for that quality.
Yes, I completely agree with everything you said! I think Shanghai is an excellent destination for first-time visitors. Chinese hospitality is exceptional-people are incredibly friendly and helpful. The sheer scale and cleanliness of the city blew me away! I can’t wait to return and explore more of China!
@@JohnAndDerek , To be honest, although Shanghai is “excellent”, but it really cannot fully represent China. Although Shanghai does not represent China, but, if you are really know of Shanghai, Shanghai is really a paradise to live place. I mean comprehensiveness, relativity or "everything".
Shanghai has been charged a lot in the past 10 years. It becomes more and more beautiful and more clean. Welcome to Shanghai again! Be attention: no one use cash now, everything is ordered online and paid with QR code.

Thank you so much for watching. Derek & I are very new to travel vlogging but we do know that we want to show an authentic view of China, no sensational clip bate stuff. Our next video is coming soon and we are in rural northern China in the village home where Derek grew up. An experience that few foreigners get the chance to experience, fascinating.
Thanks for watching Andrew & Pam, the next video will be coming soon. Derek is a bit slow, lol. We are very new at this. We quickly learned there is a lot of work that goes into these videos. You’ll enjoy the next one, everyone will see the village Derek grew up in northern China, his grandmother and grandfather are still living there in the same house. It was amazing.

A very interesting experience and sharing, combining culture shock and the challenge of surviving a typhoon, creating an experience that is both humorous and dramatic as the traveler explores Shanghai.
Thanks for watching. Derek and I are very new at this and are very excited about showing China to the UA-cam audience. My China experience was incredible. We are looking forward to showing viewers more videos from our adventure. I knew a lot about China before I visited but I was still shocked and blown away. All of my experiences were so positive, I realized I have more in common with the Chinese people than differences and I will continue to focus on that. Because Derek is from China, it gave me access to the real China that many tourists don’t get to see. It’s not just about the big modern cities. The culture and the people are fascinating. We are already planning a return trip this year. China is a big place to explore.
It was interesting the way you explained about pedestrian crossing in Shanghai at 11:00. The pedestrian crossing indicator was RED, clearly you have to wait for it to turn green, same as in Vancouver or any Canadian major cities. You do not have right of way when the pedestrian light was red.
I think he said “when you don’t have lights” you don’t have the right of way. Road vehicles in China have the right of way if there is no lights stopping them for you to walk. Even when the light is red they will cross if it’s clear. They do not automatically stop for pedestrians like they do in Canada. You have to wait for the traffic to clear before you walk. Trust me, I experienced it for 3 weeks. 😊
Amazing video John and Derek, certainly makes me want to visit Shanghai. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. Loved the pace of this one, excellent editing, the narration with snippets of what is to come is a nice touch. Shanghai Tourism Board (if such a thing) should hire you guys. ❤
Welcome! I have lived and worked in China for 20 years and Covid also interrupted my after retirement self-driving travel plans within China; caught up last year with four separate trips.
We didn’t rent any bikes this trip, but I do understand they are super cheap to rent. The cost is most likely based on how long you use them. They are purposely super inexpensive like the subways so that more people use alternative environmentally friendly forms of transport. We are going back to China this year and we will definitely be trying them this time. Thanks for watching.

That would be awesome! If you have the option to travel to a third country from China, they do have a visa-free transit policy allows eligible foreign travelers to stay in the country for up to 10 days. This policy applies to citizens of 54 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand… A tourism visa is also pretty easy to get, it took less than a week for me to get it after the submission. And it’s normally a ten-year multi-entry visa that allows you to stay up to 60 days at a time. 😉
The description of “white hot” comes from my Indian friend who would prepare special samosa’s that were very mildly spiced and she called them the “white hot version for her white friends”. We couldn’t handle the heat otherwise. Derek can handle anything. 😂
