    This scene reveals something much, much deeper, something that actually happens nowadays. This is, how language disguises things we wouldn't approve, allowing them to perpetuate unnoticed. The discourses of racism, xenophobia, sexism and any other form of hateful discourse get to survive in time because they constantly change the way they are expressed through language, they become harder to be detected, by softening the words they use. It is a bit like what Foucault said about power, that it is more diffused in many different institutions, no longer concentrated in a single person (the king) as in the time of the old regimes, and therefore, power is not so easily detected, it is excercised in a more subtle way through language, establishing what is normal and what is not.

    • @edward4840
      @edward4840 2 роки тому +14

      it reminds me of when people say that somebody is "traditional" when referring to a racist, sexist, homophobic etc relative. "My father is very traditional" for example when talking about him being homophobic or racist or whatever is something I've heard a lot of people say. And the effect it has is covering up the actual consequences of those beliefs, instead implying that they are just sheltered or quaint or maybe even from a simpler time. The true consequence of the beliefs are things such as the policies which refuse gay men from donating blood. It's the euphemistic language which covers up the real horrors and effects of these beliefs and ideologies, making it easier to ignore the discrimination they lead to under the guise of being "old-fashioned". Sure, everybody knows what you mean, but there's a different reaction from people when you say someone has a traditional worldview instead of calling them out for being bigoted.

    • @chusty93
      @chusty93 2 роки тому

      @@edward4840 Absolutely! Another interesting example is the Soros conspiracy. It's plain old antisemitic "jews want to rule the world, they already control the banks". Nowadays you cannot say that out loud, but pointing out one specific man, who not so casually is a jewish billionaire, you can spread the same antisemitic message without people noticing.

    What I love about this scene is how absolutely nobody cared or asked for this explanation. These businessmen were going to go along with this no matter what words were used. But Vivienne talks here like a person trying to convince *themselves* that what they’re doing is right. That what they’re doing is justifiable. That while yes, they are condoning the creating and maintenance of modern day concentration camps, it’s actually not that bad and that it’s all just a question of words and preconceptions. She talks like a person with a guilty conscience and ends up highlighting a problem that no one there was likely even thinking about. Such a well written character and series.

    If they have a second series, chances are they will work around people like the businessmen in that room, and what happened to them. Vivienne Rook was just one character, a figurehead which gave these people an outlet for their cruelty. She may have been charged and arrested (allegedly), but those people still exist who were lurking in the shadows all that time looking to profit from human misery, and for all we know, they were emboldened by her and will no doubt try and get back into positions where they are legitimised, either through insidious campaigns of their own, or through a coup.
    The way Vivienne sells the idea, like it's just a measure of compassion almost, that the sites are for the people our society cannot cope with, but it's better than just letting them die on the streets, it's barbaric. She is literally justifying probably genocide, but sells it like charity. Emma Thompson deserves some accolade for her performance in this show, simply because she portrayed a manipulative sociopath perfectly.

    They were originally from the Anglo-Boer war, yes, but they weren't just places where displaced people were housed. The English caused Boers to be displaced during the war cause they had much greater military strength, then put the poor and homeless in these camps. There they lived in squalor, were mistreated, died, and developed a hatred for the English that bled into the 20th century. After the war, Afrikaners developed a national identity so strong that they started forming political parties that would eventually lead to Apartheid. While Apartheid benefitted both Afrikaans and English people, it's no coincidence that EVERY Apartheid president was an Afrikaner.

      Which it is. Everything you see in these shows or movies has already been cleverly planned. It's just icing on the cake when they show you the series and talk about it and Bragg about it.

    Concentration camps are much older than the Boer War. They originated during the Spanish Cuban Ten Years War (1868-1878), so not a British invention at all. Lazy writing.

      it's not lazy writing lmao. that's literally what the character is trying to do. frame it as a British invention that worked etc. fascists lie constantly

      I'm willing to accept that this sort of thing is more grounded in reality if there is evidence. But the idea that she would talk so flippantly about concentration camps and go on a long ramble in front of these people is ludicrous. Seems like a scene that Russel wrote in to be blunt
