Senior maiko Yuriha dancing Gion Kouta [November 15, 2019]

- Thanks to Exclusive Kyoto, I got to attend a small group dinner with a maiko on November 15, 2019. Said maiko turned out to be Yuriha of the famous Tama Okiya of Gion Kobu! She danced Gion Kouta for us, then sat and chatted with us for a while before we each got to challenge her to a game of Konpira Fune Fune. It was a wonderful evening!
This video has been sitting on my computer for a year but I've been reminiscing a lot since I can't travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I thought I'd upload this for all to see and enjoy :)

First Part - Spring
Tsuki wa oboro ni Higashiyama,
月はおぼろに東山,
The moon sits on Higashiyama,
Kasumu yogoto no kagaribi ni,
霞む夜毎のかゞり火に,
Through the haze the signal fires can be seen at night,
Yume mo izayō benizakura
夢もいざよう紅桜,
Dreaming of the crimson cherry blossoms,
Shinobu omoi wo furisode ni,

Second Part - Summer
Natsu wa kawara no yusuzumi,
夏は河原の夕涼み,
In summer we keep cool at night by the river,
Shiroi eriashi bonbori ni,
白い襟足ぼんぼりに,
The white of the eriashi like paper lanterns,
Kakusu namida no kuchibeni mo,
隠す涙の口紅も,
Also hides the tears of our red lipstick,
Moete mi wo yaku Daimonji,
燃えて身を焼く大文字,
My heart burns like Daimonji,

Third Part - Autumn
Kamo no kawara no mizuyasete,
加茂(鴨)の河原の水痩せて,
The Kamo River’s water grows thin,
Musebu seoto ni kane no koe,
咽ぶ瀬音に鐘の声,
The sound of the water and a bell are audible,
Kareta yanagi ni akikaze ga,
枯れた柳に秋風が,
Autumn winds blow through the weeping willow,
Fuku ya koyoi mo yo mo sugara,
吹くや今宵も夜もすがら,
Tonight my tears will blow away too,
Gion koishi ya darari no obi yo.

Fourth Part - Winter
Yuki wa shitoshito marumado ni,
雪はしとしと丸窓に,
Snow falls around the round window,
Tsumoru ōse no sashimukai,
積もる逢瀬のさしむかい,
I enjoy a secret meeting face to face with you,
Hikage tsumetaku sayo fukete,
灯影冷たく小夜ふけて,
Even by the lantern it is cold as the night goes on,
Moyai makura ni kawa chidori,
もやい枕に川千鳥 ,
On my pillow, the plovers by the river,

Agreed! When I asked her, Yuriha said she does want to turn her collar and become a geiko. Her okiya sister, Tatsuha, has already done so. I hope Yuriha gets to, as well, but with the pandemic, I'm not sure how things will turn out!

@@rizavixen Rumour has it that Yuriha is now wearing sakkou (June 2021) so she should be turning her collar very soon!

No, not yet! She debuted in 2017 so if she does turn her collar, it won't be until 2021-ish.
So rumour has it that Yuriha has started to wear sakkou now, so she will become a geiko soon :)
@Miku is the special hairdo used before her erikae which is the ceremony when she becomes geiko (that means a full fledged geisha, geiko is the word used in Kyoto where most of them are ) I guess she already had her erikae
@Miku Yes! Sakkou is the stage where a maiko is preparing to "turn her collar" and become a geiko. The name "sakkou" comes from the sakkou hairstyle worn at this time. The maiko will also wear a special outfit (the tradition of what they wear varies by district - for example, Gion Kobu maiko wear formal black crested kimono with their usual white collars, but Gion Higashi maiko will wear a solid red collar with metallic shimmer and a purple formal kimono) and often paint her teeth black (ohaguro). During this period, a maiko will typically perform the dance "Kurokami" ("Black Hair") at all her ozashiki. A maiko's sakkou period will usually last 2-4 weeks.
