      He makes an excellent point: athletes like Talou aren't compensated well for the spectacular times they are running. Some of these athletes come from countries that don't bother funding athletics.

      Anyone who could take Shelly from being 100% stuck as just a fast starter who either almost got caught or got caught and passed left and right, to making her have the start and the top speed on the level of most others, is TALENTED! Shelly was the Christian Coleman of the 100M and basically more of a 60M type of talent (I’m referring to her style, not her abilities), and here she is with 10.6 left and right in 2022! What coach is good enough to topped Francis in ability?

    Incredible interview. I love how articulate and well versed he is in his job and just the sport overall. loved the discussion on the accolades/achievement disparity and i have to whole heartedly agree. Elaine and Shelly maybe well loved and respected but certainly aren't as talked about or celebrated as they deserve to be. They've completely revolutionized woman sprinting imo. Especially Shelly, her achievements and impact are quite simply unparalleled. Both on and off the track in women's sprinting. Hopefully Paris24 brings so much joy and glory for these women and as a result, coach walcott as well!!

    I love this interview and highly respect Coach Walcott! It’s interesting what he mentioned about the American vs Jamaican recognition, and I have two comments on that: 1. As a black American constantly complaining about racism, etc., the “american” thing is largely an issue of USA white supremacy; the only reason they celebrate the black athletes is because they represent USA, which in their minds is white supremacy, and 2. Contrary to what many Jamaicans may understand, Shelly and Elaine are HIGHLY REGARDED! They may not be as wealthy as they should be, but during the Bolt/Shelly dominance, trust me when I say we Americans HIGHLY respected Shelly…trust and believe!
    I think we just kinda got over Shelly for a moment, just as we got over Allyson Felix for a moment as well, when they began to lose races mid-career. Shelly was looking like her career was over in the early 2010’s…American folks quickly forget about folks and move on to the next shiny thing. Very short memory in USA except for we huge fans.

    • @vevenamcleish6533
      @vevenamcleish6533 6 місяців тому

      Agree with most of what you said however, there has never been a time when Shelly seems like her career was over in the 2010......2012 Olympic gold. 2013 she won triple of (100, 200 and 4x100 relay, and her best medal haul in a championship ) 2015 gold, 2016 had a broken toe but achieved a bronze medal at Olympic, 2017 had a baby, 2019 gold after having a baby. She is unmatchable.

    • @stevie586
      @stevie586 6 місяців тому

      @@vevenamcleish6533 thanks for replying. Trust me, there were many times in Shelly’s career where it appeared she was done…she was losing races left and right during many years. However, something about Shelly, just like Elaine in Olympics, is she ALWAYS pulls herself together during championship years! I know what I say to be true because I was watching like every single track meet back then, and I remember the trends. The 2021 Shelly and current is a completely different beast than the prior champion she was then!

    I agree with Walcott and it’s so sad. Sha’Carri won ONE championship and got so much attention (which she deserves), yet Elaine and Shelly have been winning for YEARS yet they don’t get as much recognition and it sucks. Shelly was going sub 10.7 weekly at one point in 2022 and it was barely highlighted.

Even Usain Bolt 🔩 who has done so much to market this amazing sport to the 4 corners of the world. And some of these American athletes has not even come close to their achievements. Because of the hidden agenda in the midst of this society, our jamaicans are not compensated for the hard work and effort they've placed on this important sport. Coach Walcott with that marketing question about shacarri, elaine, shelly getting recognition just rightfully debunk everything stephen francis said two weeks ago about Usain and Noah. The fact that they are American will get them recognized regardless. They do not have to achieve anything great, they are American, and that alone puts them at the forefront. Plus they have the might of the US influence and money machine behind them . Shacarri just signed a $20M deal for winning 1 championship. Shelly also sponsored by Nike with multiple championship wins has a deal worth around $8 to $10M. Nikes bias is because Shacarri is American.

    1) Charisma 2) Having Agents who can aggressively sell you. If Shelly or Elaine aint getting what Usain got commercially, its on them.
    (For the record I never even felt Bolt's team marketed effectively to the American market. He had a Puma national commerical in America..and it was always linked with reggae music & Jamaica in the background. He should've crossed over to the point where he could do Geico, car, credit card commercial. Hes a guy with humor, he should've gotten Blake Griffin, Chris Paul type commercials. A remote island of under 3M with *not very fancy airports or schools*, has rewritten sprinting history, but you don't always get that sense. Why?? Well, this is the disappointing part: press largely overlooking the sprinting factory that has become 🇯🇲. Like Walcott said, 100yrs of sprinting history, turned sheer dominance and outlets like Citrus Mag are only now going to JA?? C'mon. 2024 will be a consequential yr as SR has matured and trying to undo a 28 yr spell of no gold for 🇺🇸 in W100m, 🇯🇲 will compete but has great competition in other sprinters like Gabby Thomas (🇯🇲!! 😆). Shelley and Elaine has ran for over a decade and has never had Americans tuning into track in non Olympic years. ShaCarri draws interest to a sport that people only watch once every 4 years. And why would America promote a foreign athlete in our country? That doesn’t happen in any sport.

    SFP has plenty of personality. The sport (the athletes) is just not well covered and marketed by the gatekeepers. The reasons Sha’Carri transcends the sport is because she is American but also she basically said “F the norms” and she hasn’t cared what the gatekeepers think. This in addition to her suspension for marijuana and her public admonishing and then coming back and getting the world title. So it’s about the story that can be told and sold. She could quit track right now and make more money doing her own reality TV show. But either way, the greatness of ETH and SFP is not fully recognized because the system in place is setup to keep the money and power with the executives and sponsors. For every Bolt or Lyles or Sydney there are hundreds of pros that are treated as expendable. Even the ones that are champions. The sport gatekeepers don’t want the athletes to be bigger than the sport. They don’t want it to grow so much that they lose their power
