Hi Abby... I am 69 years old now and was so fortunate to have my mother buy it for me in 1972 when it first came out. I was almost 18 then. We listened deeply to the album and the lyrics trying to understand them. What a wonderful time and what a great mom I had!!
You do a great job with your video presentations!! Long may you run young lady!! Thank you!! D-boy

One result of this album was spurring Bob Dylan to start writing songs again. When he heard 'Old Man' on the radio he thought that should have been him singing that song. His last album was the eclectic "New Morning" in 1970. He was going through a dry spell in writing that would end in 1974 with "Planet Waves".

@@abigaildevoe I’ve heard the track was “Heart Of Gold”,& that Dylan thought was such an obvious cop of his style that he wrote “Forever YOUNG(get it?)”as a bit of a dig @ Neil. I like how your earrings & blouse pretty much perfectly mirror the album cover colors…

Neil Young is one of my musical heroes. I love his acoustic albums but mostly his Rock albums with Crazy Horse. I love his sensitivity to express his feelings, the way he sees the world, how he addresses his concerns, or simply how he describes the nature and madness of life today in his lyrics.

My fav Neil Young album is Goldrush which was immediately satisfying from the get-go feeling unified in a way that Harvest didn't achieve for me. Harvest offers challenges and is the work of an original, masterful, songwriter and takes musical chances. Which should we applaud the most? Important to say I think Old Man is one of the greatest songs.
A beautiful episode of Vinyl Monday, again, where we go deep, very deep, in the company of someone who has lived, is currently living, the music. It kind of makes me feel my listening has been shallow but I don't mind, I'm corrigible: it's one of the reasons I find this channel so compelling.

Leaving a comment during the last hour of this Vinyl Monday. Coincidentally, my latest order of vinyl from go-to indie store arrived this morning at 8:35am. Included was Rose City Band's latest Garden Party, Death Cab For Cutie's Asphalt Meadows acoustic version (loved the studio version last year), Miles Davis' Turnaround (RSD)...AND serendipitously (wait for it), the latest Chris Bellman repress of Neil Young's AAA Harvest!...the same day as you vinyl Monday!! I've had an OG Canadian pressing for quite a while, but about a week ago my local had in it back in stock and I pulled the trigger (I've done the same new/old thing for Joni's Blue and CSNY's Déja Vu).
This is an all-time favorite. I also have a fantastic memory of driving south into the U.S. one summer in the early 90s with my best friend, and the orchestral part of A Man Needs a Maid came on as we were driving through Franconia Notch, NH. It was so over-the-top dramatic that we both looked at each other and burst out laughing. Top 5 life / music memory for me.
I was out the door early today (after my delivery) and could not consume your video as I often do (day of). I look forward to your breakdown of Harvest over coffee in the morning!
EDIT: Finally sat down to absorb this entire episode. I really enjoyed your take on it and it had the effect of causing me to revisit some the Harvest lyrics. For a self proclaimed amateur musicologist, I was also surprisingly unaware of the Area Code 615 collective, so I learned that tidbit as well. Have a great week!

Another deep and insightful journey through the past. A classic album needs a vinyl Monday episode to complete it. I’m starting to think of Vinyl Mondays as a classic album hall of fame and love the anticipation of what will be next under the spotlight.
Neil Young stands as one of the great commentators of our times; politics, war, racism, social decline (“nose-to-the stone people, put the business back on track”), terrorism, little or nothing escapes the watchful glare of this song writing genius. Whether facing the uncomfortable aspects that plague our society (“I watch the needle take another man”) or weaving an emotional tapestry to deftly frame the more comfortable though seemingly inarticulate observations such as the romance found scattered along Americas lost and endless desolate highways, love (“I used to order just to watch her float across the floor“) and other familiar emotions recognisable to all but framed in a way that only a master craftsman can translate into music and words.
Harvest is certainly not wanting for company as a seminal album in a catalogue of works that defies any notion of limits that lesser artists might face when having to deal with the moving on from and onward progression in the wake of just a single career defining masterwork.
Finding an equal that can match this man’s ability to score a soundtrack to our lives, times and social complexities is no easy task. But I’m sure that you will stumble across something for next week even if it means leaving your very blood across many a track in your continuing mining of the sounds we so cherish with an obsession justified by our passion to celebrate these artisans who curate our days with such majestic aplomb.

I heard this over my shoulder as I made model aeroplanes while my sister put it on in the rumpus room. I was first impressed by the tubular bells in Man Needs a Maid (classical orchestral nerd at around ten). I didn't hear it for a while after that but got the chance to run it by myself again in the '80s. During that time Needle and the Damage done became the joke when you referred to buskers who always included it. Thanks to this vid (and some growing up from the sentiment in the last sentence), looks like I'll be seeking it out all over again. thanks. Oh, and happy birthday.

in my early days as a commercial sailor, I worked old ships , where on one I shared a foc'scle with some old WW2 veteran sailors out of Texas. I felt like listening to music , so asked my shipmates if they had a preference among the handful of cassettes I had. Austin White Carter the third answered, " well, you only got one good one , put on that cowboy tape."
I puzzled over my small assortment of tapes and had to ask for help to find they were talking about Neil Young , probably the album "everybody knows this is nowhere"..

Great review of Harvest. "Alabama" was also a comment of the then Governor of Alabama George Wallace who was a racist. The "Cadillac" metaphor was later used in "Tired Eyes" from The "Tonight's The Night" album which is also very worthy of your review. I believe some of The Stray Gators were replaced on the tour and the subsequent album "Time fades Away" features John Barbata on Drums instead of Kenny Buttrey who left or maybe was fired.

Words (Between the Lines of Age), IS Neil's heaviest song. It's the best track on on Harvest, hands down. It is a song of loss. The feeling that with age, we will all fade away. The piano ssounds ncredible in contrast with Neil's blistering solo. I challenge anyone to hear Neil sing "I WAS A JUNK MAN" verse and not feel like time is escaping your hands.

    Another home run, Abby.
I love it when you swing for the fences out of sheer passion for the music, and, in this case, the artist. As Tony Bennet said of Amy Winehouse, I think you have the “complete gift.” You have a star’s presence, and I feel proud of and excited for you every time you rise to a new occasion. You hint at your introversion here. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if your Myers-Briggs personality type is INFJ, aka “the extroverted introvert.” I’m happy (and not so happy) that I’m an INFJ. The drive for greatness has taken me to absurdly intense peak experiences. On the other hand, the loneliness that comes with it is a never-ending pain.
Neil Young is a TITANIC songwriter. Easily in my top 5. No one is better at making me FEEL a song than Neil. He has become a huge part of my life soundtrack. I’m glad you spoke about living this album. “24 and there’s so much more.” Boy, does THAT resonate! 24 was one of my very best years. I was firing on all cylinders.
My coming-of age decade was the 1970s. I’ll argue ‘til I’m blue in the face that the 1970s is the best decade ever to have been a kid in. Anyway, the hit song history of that era is pretty screwy. “Heart of Gold” was everywhere in 1972. It touched me deeply as an 8-year-old.
Neil has always been his own best iconoclast. In keeping with that, he’s always had some punk rock in him. I think the “godfather of grunge” tag is fitting. He was pretty disillusioned by the success of having a number 1 single. He had this to say about it: “Heart of Gold” put me in the middle of the road.Traveling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride, but I saw more interesting people there." I’d love to see an Abby tutorial on his Ditch Trilogy - my favorite era. I’d thought “Tonight’s the Night” was my favorite until I heard and digested “On the Beach,” which is the soundtrack to an epic motorcycle trip I took in 2015. Especially the song, “See the Sky About to Rain.”
One myth that I wish were true is that Ronnie Van Zant was buried in a Neil Young T-shirt (that myth led to the desecration of his grave!)
You sparkle brightest when you’re discussing music that has deep personal meaning for you. No matter how much I love music, there are only a few albums that I’ll obsess over so completely that it’s all I’ll listen to for months on end, effectively living them. “On the Beach” is the one for me. “Tonight’s the Night” is Neil’s guilt laid bare. That is one harrowing listen, but I’m drawn to harrowing albums. “In Utero” and Big Star’s “Third” are also on that list. They have Neil Young qualities whether they know it or not.
    A fearless songwriter!
Who else could have written “There's one more kid that'll never go to school never get to fall in love, never get to be cool” and sell it with such unmitigated rage?
Heroin is a soul-killer. ‘Nuff said.
Keep on doing what you’re doing -especially the writing. Get ready for the big time.
Keep on rockin’ in the free world!

Love this album and treaure my first press that I inherited from my mum's collection. I rarely play it as I want to keep it in the very good condition it is. When I do drop the needle my mind always turn to my mum age 19, with her whole life in front of her, doing the same when she first bought the record.
I think Alabama is a very forthright song that could only be written with the certainty of youth. For me, it is understandable why Neil Young now finds it condescending. It would be interesting to know if you feel the same way about the song in 10-20 years time.

My first concert ever was Neil Young back on Jan. 1973. He was playing many of the songs from Harvest. I really don't remember much about it though, too much partying beforehand. I learned to play a few of the songs on the guitar and have begun playing several songs from this album again after retiring. I enjoyed this review very much ,you explained so much that I never knew about Harvest and the musicians involved. Also, a better understanding of what was going on with Neil back then. You've covered two of my favorite albums from my teens recently, Harvest and Blood on the Tracks. Brings back many memories for me. Thanks!

Neil is one of my favorite guitarists and songwriters , my favorite album by Neil is everyone knows this nowhere, ronnie van Zandt and Neil Young had a mutual respect friendship, Neil even played a memorial concert for ronnie playing sweet home Alabama they would both wear eachothers rock t,s in live shows , I lived in the south, racism is still prevalent in 2024

Abigail, Happy Birthday. Thanks for your spirit and content. Your 24th birthday is the end of your 24th year. I've seen Neil Young in concert a few times... it helps to have looked someone in the eye and exchanged smiles. I'm a Scorpio, too, and near the end of my 75th year. I remember the early 70s and this music and these people and those times, so it's wonderful to see young people appreciating it. I wish I could introduce you to my granddaughter who makes her own 70's style clothes and drives around with Led Zep cranking on her car stereo :)

I’ve lived in Los Angeles for a while now, but when I lived in Somerville in 2015, I met some friends in western Mass to see Neil Young. The first half of the set blew me away, but then he played the Monsanto years and the quality just plummeted. We all left when he started to play that album. But looking back I don’t know what I was expecting, he had just released that album. Anyway, “Harvest” is def in my top 10 albums of the 70’s. “Comes A Time” is also up there for me. Nice pick.

Your take on Words feeling like we entered halfway through it is pretty spot on. Words originally ran 16+ minutes- Neil's next album- the ill fated soundtrack album Journey Through the Past- contains this longer version, albeit in a different take and slower arrangement than what wound up on Harvest.

Harvest is one of the three vinyl albums I have and Neil Young was the first concert I went to as a kid. I also share a birthday with him, so maybe that scorpio energy is what draws me to him. Loved the "more barn" story. Thanks Abby!

On You Tube, Neil's version of Man Needs a Maid with just Neil and a piano and without the mawkish big orchestra that ruins the album version. Neil noodles the piano melody for a long while, starts singing. One of the great pop songs of history.

Great video! My personal favorite is After The Gold Rush, though. Recently, my wife and I went to the theatre to see the Harvest documentary, which I thought was amazing and my wife thought was torturous- she can't take 10 or 15 minutes of jamming on the same song to get it perfect. That kind of stuff fascinates me, though. And I, too, know how the feeling of loneliness in your mid 20's can age you and drive you to solace in substances (alcohol in my case). I listened to this album quite a lot back then because I was basically living it. Thanks for another great episode!

Neil has got one of those unique perspectives, He's the canadian-american whose more american than most americans. These songs are so much deeper than first listen. Neil can write a tragedy and make it sound like a love story, and write a love story and make it sound like a tragedy. If and when you ever feel depressed, listen to some neil and you'll slowly snap out of it. Your situation is never as bad as it seems...🚜🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾
