  • Rockingham Castle FINALE! During my visit to Rockingham Castle in Northamptonshire, I hear how one of the giants of British literature - Charles Dickens stayed at the castle in the mid-nineteenth century, visiting his friends, Richard and Lavinia Watson. He dedicated his novel, David Copperfield to them and even performed plays of his works in the Long Galley and Panel Room. I am then given a tour of the garden by James Saunders Watson which culminates in planting a tree to mark the 950th anniversary of the castle and the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Julie, I have really enjoyed this series greatly. I have learned so much of a grand castle I didn't even know existed. Of course, here in the States, there aren't many castles. Thank you. This has been very enjoyable and very informative. Looking forward to the next video.

I want to thank you for sharing a side of these grand homes. Because most of us may never have the opportunity to see them..I am fortunate that my family has a castle in Scotland and have been there a few times. We help in whatever way we can. As there is quite the lineage here in the states. And I look forward to exploring my Irish, Welsh, and English heritage in the next couple years. As you say, brilliant! And again thanks!

In the 1700s during the civil war a children's story poem was popular Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty had a great fall all the King's horses and all the King's men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
Humpty Dumpty was a large naval ship cannon that the King's army used s an artilary cannon to beat down the army of Cromwell for 2 weeks non stop till they blew up the church tower wall and the cnnon was sunk in the joining marsh and not able to be recovered. Historically it was the 1st use of cannon on land combat in the history of the English army.
Hope you like the story Julie

Charles Dickinson knew how to master his connections to popularize his writing, but his legacy true to the telling of time period of poverty and disadvantages. His personal life was a sacrifice to his career. Nothing surprising his children sold all his writing possessions.

Whenever a famous person visits an historic house in England the owners will want them to plant a tree. Trees lives live a long time and future generations of owners will be able to say, this tree was planted by blah blah famous person - cue gasps from future visitors as they get to touch the tree the famous person planted.

I have to admit I find the requests for donations and the weaving of plugs for corporate sponsors into these episodes more than a little surprising, even jarring. Maybe it's my American ignorance, but I find it difficult to imagine that an aristocratic family wouldn't have multi-generational wealth; I understand that many of the aristocracy were forced to sell estates and such after World War II, but that was almost eighty years ago. It's almost sad that estates like Rockingham and Mapperton feel compelled to resort to hosting weddings, tours and such as a source of income; it's as though perpetuating the idea of an aristocratic estate has become their full-time job, which almost seems like more trouble than it's worth.
