Oregon is among the most dangerous states in the country according to a new report

- Shootings and homicides are declining in Portland, Oregon's largest city. But that doesn't change how the state ranks nationwide.
A new report shows Oregon is one of the top ten most dangerous states, based on violent crime and property crime.
In the first quarter of 2022, Portland Police say there were 483 shootings and 34 homicides.
During that same time in 2023, there were 346 shootings and 29 homicides.
From January 1 to April 30, 2024, there were 285 shootings and 25 homicides.
From January 1 to May 11th, there have been 304 shootings and 27 homicides. All but seven were due to gunfire.
In 2022 Mayor Ted Wheeler declared a gun violence emergency.
Community activist Lionel Irving thinks that's one reason for the drop. “We had that urgency,” he said.
“Everybody was in on it. That's why we were able to see a dip,” Irving added.
Bretto Jackson says here’s another reason. “A lot of those major shooters are in jail,” he said.
Jackson said jail isn't the solution to the problem, either. “We need more early intervention programs, not wait until you get into the system programs and then we can help you.”
Both men say shootings in Portland need to be treated as seriously as the fentanyl epidemic, or those numbers are not going to rapidly decline.
“Fentanyl does kill, one pill can kill,” said Jackson. “That's a fact. But a stray bullet and a shooting popping up in broad daylight is just a terrifying experience.”
“Who is doing the work?” said Irving. “Who's doing it effectively? And let's get our funds to them. Let's double down there so we can save some of these young men and women because it's a travesty.”

How about not releasing the criminals back out onto the street?
Then the bonding companies would go out of business then that's less businesses open in the neighborhood😊
Its a no bond state
It’s not a gun violence problem. It’s a culture, socioeconomic, fatherless homes problem.
I’m thankful you mention all three. We can’t fix this by trying to address one without the others.
Hitting the head on the nail. Not so obvious to those who cannot see a larger picture.
What percentage of the homeless and drug addict vagrants are fatherless?
The early intervention program is to be a father to your kids.
Agreed! Family values have been lost.
Agreed! Children need both parents.
Don't make it a parental issue. Studies show the socioeconomic impact on families, schools and city-sponsored youth programs. Worse, the recidivism rate is a source of state and city revenue.
@@stan4now Reality shows that decades of turning a blind eye to the impact that fatherless homes have had on youth has significantly contributed to the current situation. Take an honest look around. It can’t be ignored. It’s a major factor, more so than poverty.
Live 15 min from Portland and haven’t been their in 2 years. I’m enjoying my safety and actual sensibility ☺️
I live 1 1/2 hours away from Portland & its not far enough distance!
Great job patting yourself on the back! Nobody cares about your living situation
Its all the same - not just downtown ya know?
@@tory1831 exactly! one big dystopian nightmare!
It's quiet and safe out in the boonies. Oregon is beautiful just don't go to Portland
Who thought decriminalizing drugs, defunding police, and allowing homelessness could end so badly. 🤷
Increased police funding in on your ballot. The power is in your hands!
@@MsGenXodus:
Exactly why do you guys want to make Portland an authoritarian place??
You want authoritarianism? Move to North Korea.
Never thought I’d see the day when Oregon became one of the most dangerous states. Horribly sad. Thanks Oregon leadership
nah, it all falls onto the shoulders of OR democrat voters before they elected folks who mirror themselves...
It's been that way tho, nothing new here on the news 😂
Also blame white guilt and virtue signaling.
This is a statewide issue that requires everyone to do their part to address the issues that can lead to deadly violence.
You cannot blame politicians entirely. These are voters making stupid decisions, as well.
How ridiculous!!! Defund the police, legalize drugs, legalize camping in parks and streets, call violence and trashing the city 'protest, on and on yada, yada... stupid on stupid and here's what you get. TAKE OWNERSHIP VOTERS.
Just curious why Kansas City has 51 homicides compared to Portlands 25? They don't have "legalized" drugs, legal camping, and they vote Red. It's almost as if crime happens everywhere or something.
@@gregstump4450 Blacks
It is the rare democrat who issues a mea culpa and changes their voting behavior. They typically double-down on the bad policy, predictably throwing more money and government at the problems they created.
@@gregstump4450 KC has 3 times the people and only twice the murders. Sounds like they are doing something better, but not good enough.
@@justincase2291 not sure where you get your information from but KC is certainly not 3 times the size. It has 130,000 less people than Portland and yes two times the murder. Is that really doing something right?
What did the people think was going to happen? No wonder half the state wants to leave.
Unfortunately, that's not true. There isn't enough housing for the people we have now and not that many people leaving.
Mostly peaceful violence though
The liberals own words. Best comment!
LOL! This is the only comment that actually made me chuckle.
We need more concealed carry holders.
We don't need any new program(s).
It all start's with Raising Quality People at Home!
Oh please! STOP trying to put a GOOD SPIN on the CESSPOOL known as PORTLAND or OREGON itself!
If you took Portland, Salem and Eugene out of the mix, Oregon would probably be in the bottom 10.
that's right, this is just what Valley residents voted for. Maybe better to not work on Eastern OR secession but to kick out of OR the Valley and its loony democrats...
That’s correct!! Oregon is mostly very safe!
But then 80% of the state population would be gone
Right....because we all know how wonderful Medford, Roseburg, and Grant's Pass are
This message sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce, and the Portland Bureau of Tourism.
Good sarcasm!
Early intervention? Like parenting?
Lock up the criminals. Voters need to dump Mike Schmidt as DA.
As long as Soros keeps bankrolling the local justice departments nothing is going to change.
Thats good to hear - we also pay the highest taxes and pay way too much for , Food, Gas, Rent , and Housing. May as well have everything be F#ucked up. We also have the worst Governor,Mayor and city council. Makes sense.
I don't know, I live in Washington State and I would put Inslee and DA Fergusan up against your Governor and DA for worst in the country! Heck DA Bob Fergusan doesn't even pretend to not be corrupt. He forced two political opponents with jail if they didn't pull out of the race. Their crime was having the same first and last name and being listed higher on the ballot sheet than DA Fergusan. Talk about a power mad corrupted politician. Of course he doesn't spend any time prosecuting car theft, assaults, property crime or SA, only folks that might interfere with his personal power.
Sorry but everyone needs to get the F out of there.
0:01 Because some cities aren't reporting the crimes for statistics. 😂
It is heartbreaking to see what Oregon has become but there are several States just as, if not more, dangerous then Oregon.
Top 10 would mean that there are 9 others also in the top 10. So, yeah.
Typical dumb deflecting
Shootings and homicide are still out of control! Crime is everywhere! Businesses are closing and families are leaving because of it.
People are flooding into small town like mine and we cannot keep up with the sudden influx!
@@amandar5827 The used to be small cities are becoming min- Portland`s! McMinnville is a case in point with the homeless & their running out of the drug reversal medication awhile back & having to have more brought in by other agencies! @@frederickbooth7970 It sucks. My town's situation is houses are being so fast and moved into before our little infrastructure can keep up. Then the newbies complain about the lack of resources and deer eating their flowers.

Most of my people I know of have left for Eastern Or. despite their families being born & raised for > 60 years either in Tillamook or Hillsboro area. Our once small towns are now becoming bedroom community cities with many times only Sheriff contracted out police patrols such as Amity or Dayton. You would be surprised how many commuters there are from Hillsboro or Beaverton during the day.
Lack laws and your state becomes an criminal magnet
progressive get out of jail free policies are why
Thanks Ted wheeler !
Pathetic, but 40 years of one party rule and this is what you get.
Wow! I never would have thought. Cleveland, Detroit and Portland, Damn.
Every current year report about our out-of-control crime rate necessarily begins with the reporter telling us how crime is down. "You might be murdered but some will surely survive."
Quit voting Democrat Portland!
Democrats.
Yes, you hit the problem with one word.
Okay, l might not be a democrat anymore, but let’s just go ahead and vote some conservatives in and see how fast things can really get ruined around here. You’d be suffocating from the lack of self-determination.

Direct results of voting for senseless liberal policies
It's a community activist problem.
Pro tip…it’s the activist judges
As long as really stupid people keep blaming guns for the behavior of drugged up people the problem will never be solved, but that said we know motor vehicles are the sole cause of motor vehicle accidents right!? I think that motor vehicle accidents should be called motor vehicle violence, don't you?
Gang violence is probably number one reason, drugs, etc. Stay armed Oregon.
don't believe it's quite fair to include all of OR in this new ranking, the issue lies in the Valley not, say, Baker City unless the Valley's effort to legalize all drugs has crept into that community...
On a positive note the marijuana prices in Portland are very affordable and I'm thinking about moving there even though it's turning into a cesspool
Washington has also become a very violent state especially in the Seattle metro area.
My friend died from cholera on the Oregon trail.
I lived there in 1985 it has always been violent and had a severe drug problem as it's port is a central drug import hub.
Hows that build back better working for you all that voted for it ?
Here’s an idea how about you Don’t commit crime and do drugs! how about that?
Bretto Jackson is right about "early intervention programs." Others have said the same but big city mayors still aren't responding. Is it because of the revenue cities take in with the recidivism rate?
The revolving door of so-called correctional facilities needs to be locked. Everywhere.
I served on a citizen advisory panel.
Our local news outlets like it that way
"We like to shoot each other. Give us more money."

this one guy was telling me they will kill you on the streets for a dry sleeping bag when it is freezing out.
Geez, I wonder if decriminalizing drugs had anything to do with it ???

Yeah I understand your plight Oregon. I took my Rottweiler to an all you can eat buffet once. It didn't end well for anyone. Lesson learned
Good job y’all you should be proud!
Oh gee , whatever could it be...?
Homelessness Addiction and the cost of housing vs incomes, are national problems thst show up in “sacrifice” zones, nationwide.
Opportunity for fed leadership intervention, statewide.
Just like I told my daughter when she was twelve, I don't care if "everyone" else is doing it you just worry about what you are doing and you will be fine. If each state worked on solving their own problems they would not care too much about the problem three states over. In fact if a state like Washington or New York solved its own problems they could be considered a role model for others.
It’s such a shame. It’s such a beautiful state.
I think their math is 🏇💩
Don't forget a state that has incredibly over compensated public servants (and unheard of retirement pensions) that are arrogant and mock private sector tax working citizens. Not motivating, aspiring or inspiring for small business entrepreneurs taking huge financial risks.
Switching gears can someone please explain how a former collegiate baseball coach in this state that made more than a few million in his last dozen or so years of coaching is receiving more than $500K annually through that absurd PERS. That's correct over $500K per year 'till he expires. Oh 'they" also get cost of living increases. ,,. And maybe his spouse will receive after he expires?.,,. Absolute thievery and numbers far far far from addin' up.
Lol-in-USA
Gee, who would've thought the PERS fund would've caused so much grief. The majority of our state taxes goes straight to covering the PERS fund. For those of you who don't know what the PERS fund is for, it's the retirement coffer for all the state workers...cops, teachers(public and college), politicians, ODOT, dmv, dhs, etc.
@@TheIroczcamaro if it's who I'm thinking of, he held three different positions at different times at the college. I believe he was a teacher at the college, then a coach for said college team and then the college athletic director...and he draws a PERS pension for each one.
@@philbuell6657 he made plenty and more than enough money ('they are incredibly over paid") to invest on his own and not be 'guaranteed" (didn't get permission from tax payers) a gross income nearing $44k per month 'till death. “new arrivals” are re-homed and provided for in your town.
I went through The Dalles, Oregon last Thanksgiving. I've always liked passing through there for years, before. This time within five minutes of getting there at the O'Reillys, saw a druggie screaming and running after another druggie who ran into the store. Went to get gas and within a couple blocks saw about ten zombied out druggies walking in the street, screaming at invisible people, brandishing weapons, etc. Couldn't believe how much of a crap hole it's turned into. Assuming they had a huge influx of homeless druggies from Portland. What a shame. Same thing's happened in Washington State. Areas that used to be beautiful and relatively safe have turned into disgusting, garbage dumps full of criminals wandering all over stealing crap and victimizing people on a daily basis. A lot of them were transplants from Tacoma, Seattle, etc. There's going to be a huge exodus out of the West Coast of people fed up with paying ridiculous taxes and seeing little in return.
Another democrat ruined beautiful state RIP
