- SOLD This is a full review and test drive of a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GL 450, a large luxury SUV sold globally but built with the American market in mind. This sucker is BIG - a direct competitor for the Cadillac Escalade and Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon. By 2016, the 450's original 4.7 V8 was replaced with a twin-turbocharged 3.0 V6 putting out the same horsepower, if down on torque a little bit. It's mated to the tried and true 7-speed automatic and Mercedes-Benz's advanced 4Matic AWD system, making it a capable off roader.
The original GL, released in 2007 (US), was designed to replace the much more primitive G-Wagen, but customer demand prevented MB from doing away with that model. Regardless, the GL found great success, and enjoyed a position at the top of the large luxury SUV class for many years, selling more units than any other competitor. SOLD

I have a 2011 GL550 that just turned 70,000 Mike's. It's a V8 powered tank! Total beast. I really love it. The interior on the newer GL's are a bit nicer, but nothing beats the normally aspired V8 motor that will go 500,000 miles with nothing more than basic maintenance.

Your a legend when it comes to vehicle reviews Bill. I’m finally moving up from my old wonderful 03 Lincoln Navigator. It’s time to retire it after 10+ years of ownership and at 220K miles. I’m in the process of finding a nice gently used GL for my new family vehicle.
I am not a fan of these headlights. Prefer the previous generation's design.

I like you..you are a straight shooter..you don't pussy-foot around..What do you really think about this suv or any other used GL450 suv as far as reliability? Are they really as bad as some say?
Be aware about the suspension popping, it happened three days after it was bought (I kept raising the car, I don’t do that anymore). No problem yet. Just got it last year, over the summer.
