But he has no off button for writing. He's tapped himself dry.
Name 3, not 2 not 1, name three great songs you recall that he's written in the 21st century and would love to hear live, like Powderfinger, Mr. Soul, anything from his first four solo albums/Rust Never Sleeps..............Right............My point, exactly. He writes 50 songs and maybe one is memorable.

Neil for me this song is charged with emotions. It takes me back decades to when families were everything, your heart, your survival, and feeling life would always be intertwined with each other, never to change. Until...
The boat that was coming up the river equipped to blow you away, to me it touched on Vietnam for a sick moment. and all the young boys who turned into men the second their boots hit the ground, their spirits too faded away and apart from a family's security and love.
Today your words, and song could be from any event that took place. There will always be that element on earth wanting to kill for gain. Just as there will never be a shortage of Mothers tears. This song of yours evokes tears because it hits each one according to their own experience.
I've been around for nearly all the years allotted to a human, and I and my family have always been a fan of Neil Young music.
You still bring it Neil, Long May You Run...

I never really liked this song until I heard this version (now it's one of my favorites). The stripped down acoustic version allowed me to hear the emotion of the song that I couldn't hear in the electric version. Sometimes the intensity of electric guitars, amplifiers and "rock" over shadow the feeling in a song (in my opinion). Thanks for sharing this version.

I had read that article as well. I am left to imagine an invading Navy tooling up river in some backwoods Confederate hideaway. Some young man fighting for his life, his home and loved ones. I am struck dumb by the senselessness of it all. Especially disturbing were the new and efficient ways in which men slaughtered one another when they saw the elephant. From grapeshot, 200 lb. mortar shells launched against civilians in Vicksburg or starving, diseased prisoners in a field in Georgia or an island in Lake Erie, I am reminded of the nature of man. I'm blown away by the people that are whining for "civil war" on the internet. No accurate estimate has ever been made to satisfy me regarding the number of civilian deaths in that war that was "all hell". Great illustrations. I found the fallen oak and maple leaves floating down river most poignant.

Could this be Neil's most powerful statement about life and choices, good and bad? Neil's best song, period? Obviously a very subjective topic. But for me, from moments after I put the needle down on side 2 in 1979, that song hits this former 22 year-old as hard then as it does now. Heard it heavy; heard it slow. Forever in my set list. The last song I ever want to hear if I'm lucky enough to choose.

would you please tell me the meaning and story of this song? No one on the entire Internet or world seems to agree on what it's about? But I understand what you're saying music can touch in unbelievable. Way

''Red means run, son/numbers add up to nothin'''- could be a line from the mouth of one of Faulkner's Snopses characters-like the father in ''Barn Burning''.

Beautiful video for a masterpiece which, had it been issued then, and thus (acoustic) would have instantly become a folk classic, i'm sure.

Wow! There is so much poignant power in these prose! Expressions of universal bravery in the face of oppression and insurmountable odds. Courage lads and lasses! Band together, and stay sharp, so there is someone left who can write the next song with a brighter tune! There will always be sacrifice in overcoming those who wish to relieve us from our duties and pursuits. Remember the reasons if they are worth your life, they are worth your death! Be brave and honorable, stand for what's right, and someone may praise your ways in a song.

Anyone have thoughts about the line “I saw black and my face flash in the sky”? I’m unsure how to interpret it … did his gun backfire and blow his face off, or was he shot by someone on the gunboat? I’d like to hear others’ interpretations. Has always been my favourite Neil tune. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

This is an incredible piece of song writing. Love it when the Horse take flight playing it but this version just transcends it all.

Raw, unplugged and stripped to the song's essence. Very REAL. Yet very different from the original release with Crazy Horse. Thanks for sharing this with us Neil!

Beautiful video ! Does anybody where the story in the song comes from ? I used to listen to the Chrome Dreams a lot while reading Hugo Pratt's "Fort Wheeling", a very good graphic novel taking place in the 18th century Virginia. That song is a perfect match for it, and it's been one of my Neil Young favorites from the very first hearing !

Got one dunlop herco gold pick, used by Neil, from the 2014 Barolo stage: I swear I'll use it every time I'll play and sing this song on stage... sacred things for sacred songs.
Thank you for this masterpiece, Neil

I had never heard the acoustic version before I found this video. Great version! Powderfinger was my favoite track from the Rust Never Sleeps album I listened to back in 1979. I wonder if Neil and Gordon Lightfoot had any contact with each other before he moved from Canada to CA? Gordy is also one of my favorite songwriters.
