    I'm one of the fews who actually bought and owned a brand new civic and mazda 3. Civic was good but the 3 was the most fun to drive. If you are the type of person who just need a car to go from point A to B, get a Civic. But if you enjoy driving and know about car dynamics, get a 3. Simple as that.
    I sold my civic, and am currently driving a 3. i'm planning to get another brand new 3 in a few months.

    I've never heard so many contradictions in my entire life. Just in the first 2 minutes:
    "This car is so much fun to drive. I just really enjoy driving this car down the road." Nice.
    "But it just didn't deliver. It's rough around the edges. I really wasn't that impressed." Oh.
    Like wtf?

    Mazda 3 over the Civic any fucking day. that 2.5 sky activ engine is incredible! road feel is amazing. my sister has one and its really one of the best handling cars in its class, and this is coming from a guy who drives a 2014 M4.

    In this review, AutoGuide made comments on the Mazda3 that made it sound so bad. They think 184-hp 2.5L is underpowered and noisy, the faux carbon fibre is 'tacky', and the SKYACTIV 6-speed auto holds gears too long and are not impressed. What?! Those are entirely different comments made back in 2014 and 2015 comparisons... I knew Honda Civic was gonna win this one from the get go.

    • @yofutofu
      @yofutofu 8 років тому +9

      +Michael Lee , You have to remember there is context, 184 HP from a 2.5L is underpowered WHEN comparing it to Honda's 1.5L that makes similar power. The SKYACTIV transmission felt sluggish WHEN compared to Honda's CVT. Remember this is a comparison video and everything is in context.

    • @yofutofu
      @yofutofu 8 років тому +8

      +Michael Lee Alright you can ignore all I said about context and repeat the word "besides" as much as you'd like but that doesn't change the fact that this is a comparison video. If they think a 2.5L should make more power over Honda's 1.5L you can't argue that their opinions are wrong, there's a difference between opinion and fact. Another note, you say that Honda's 2.4 makes 184hp, honda doesn't have just one 2.4 litre engine, I could bring up the K24Z7 that makes 201HP and is also found in the Civic. Stop dick riding Mazda so hard you little bitch and realize the fact that all the "negative" claims about the 3 in this video are in comparison to the 2016 Civic. The 3 is a great car (also stated in this video) but the Civic is just better, who gives a shit? If you like the 3 more that's all you.

    • @yofutofu
      @yofutofu 8 років тому +10

      +Michael Lee Is English your second language, or do you just have the reading comprehension of a 5-year-old? I never said anything about Honda not making 2.4L engines, I said they don't make ONE. So you can't just say "Honda's 2.4L makes 185HP" because Honda has more than one 2.4L.
      And the reason auto guide isn't praising the 3 like they did before is because the new Civic has overshadowed it, which is the WHOLE POINT OF THE VIDEO THEY JUST MADE.

    • @yofutofu
      @yofutofu 8 років тому +7

      +Michael Lee Let me make a simpler example that hopefully someone as stupid as you can understand, and will hopefully clear up for you why they made the negative comments about the 3.
      Little Tommy has 2 chocolate bars, Tommy says "I love both of these chocolate bars", his mother asks him "Tommy what chocolate bar do you like more though?", Tommy responds "I like the second one a little more because the first one melts too fast.". Do you understand now? The Mazda 3 is a good car in isolation, and leading in its class, but the arrival of the new 2016 Civic has created a new standard for AutoGuide, its not that they dislike the 3, they just were pointing out flaws that they saw in it WHEN COMPARED to the new Civic. Do they not teach children how to contrast things anymore?

    • @yofutofu
      @yofutofu 8 років тому +7

      +Michael Lee O good lord you're even too stupid to see past a metaphor, there is no hope for people like you. Go on thinking the world is trying to keep Mazda down. You even disagree with yourself between two sentences, Have a good day kid, you need it. " Anything that was said about the Mazda3 were pointing out the negative things." Is literally the opposite of this "I never said they didn't say any good points". How do you expect to convince people that AutoGuide is in cahoots with Honda when you contradict yourself constantly.

    You guys do know that the 2.5L is the upgraded engine in the Mazda3, right? Bigger, more powerful engines typically consume a little more gas. The 2.5L model should be compared to a sportier, more powerful, version of the Civic. Apples to apples...

    • @AutoGuide
      @AutoGuide  8 років тому +18

      +camaro2862 The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is the more powerful, sporty engine option in the 2016 Civic. The Civic can also be had with a base 2.0-liter engine making similar power to the Mazda3's 2.0-liter engine.

    • @toyota420xp
      @toyota420xp 8 років тому +2

    I have a 2016 Mazda 3 Hatchback. I disagree with the statements said in this review. SKYACTIV Technology: the MPG for the hatchback is 30/40 MPG, and the sedan offers 31/41 mpg (my dad is a certified mechanic and foreman for SDG&E, and has worked on vehicles from body work to it's mechanics on any brand of car for over 37 years). For him to make a decision of buying a vehicle, he is definitely picky, and LOVES his 2016 Mazda 3 Sedan. I have to drive to work 66 miles a day, which is actually fun to drive instead of it being long and dreadful + it also includes a 9-Bose Surround Sound speaker system - (making those long bumper to bumper traffic commute rides a lot easier to manage). When accelerating, it has good kick to it; so SKYACTIV is awesome fuel economy without compromising engine performance, and doesn't drive like a 4-cylinder vehicle. I love high powered engines and own a 1994 S-10 Pick up with a v6 Vortec, and a 1964 Buick Riviera Wildcat 465.
    The Mazda 3 also has tons of space. This was a BIG highlight that I needed aside from fuel economy, because my dogs I take them everywhere when I am off work on the weekends. I can carry my 2 German Shepherds when folding down the back seat and still fit in another pup or a good amount of luggage without the cramming.
    The steering handles really well and smooth. It's turn radius is great, and the button controls in the center console area, steering wheel, and center dash touch screen are easy for the driver to manage when on the road and you are not distracted getting your eyes off the road. It's technology is great too. In my opinion, it is SUPER fun to drive, and Mazda has stepped up their game. I also think that Mazda has been overlooked as a company, because in reality, their cars are really great and have a good reputation on Edmunds.com for the latest model and the previous years. The Mazda 3 is top rated in it's class.

  • @carbrickscity

    I am glad that the reviewers said the Mazda3 is still more fun to drive than the Civic, especially they are basically comparing a 2014 car to a 2016. Another downside to the Civic is that they only have manual on the base model, that means I will not consider it. Not to mention they just recall all the 2.0 Civics in the US, which means no manual for the Civic now. Mazda3 for me.

      MrWalker1000 our car was a lease for 3 years so drove 36000 and car was reliable , but most cars are reliable at those mileage. Real test is after 75000. And I believe the Honda or Toyota reliability is still better. Since I lease and not have to worry about it and when time came to return the lease I got a Mazda CX3 AWD now.

    Authors did not do their homework right. Very vague expressions such as "the engine is rough around the edges", "has more(or less) technology.."
    what do you mean rough, what do you mean by technology? Why is the mazda 3 more fun to drive than a civic, explain the criteria (even though the criteria can be subjective, explain it) like body roll, sensitive pedal, more linear steering? What is it? These are just some examples, the whole review was like that.
    This review is poor.

    I think things change when you compare the lower trim Mazda3s to the Honda Civic. I drive the Civic and Mazda 3 back to back with the 2.0 Liter engines and honestly they didn't feel all that different. I preferred the Mazdas steering and 6 speed automatic but the Civic is certainly has more room and and rides a little more smooth. Both cars are excellent and you can't go wrong with either.

      To be honest with you, I actually like the Mazda 3 better although it's smaller. I like the automatic transmission it has versus a CVT. Also better exterior and interior styling imo.

      +ER B (hondaftw1234) good decision. did you get the hatchback and the auto trans? I heard many positive reviews for the transmission about how it is quick and willing to downshift when you press the gas pedal down. People said the delay between you press the pedal and waiting for it to kick down is minimum ish which is important.
      BTW if you didn't know the new 2016 honda civic are already been recalled for something in the 2.0 engine I believe. so yea don't touch the 1st year models!

    Meh, Mazda is all about driving dynamics and they're still winning on that front. The extra mpgs and space would be lost on a guy like me that places a premium on sporty driving. That CVT is a deal breaker too. My money would go to Mazda for the Hatch with a manual.

    Of course the Civic is going to win. It's a brand new, updated model, while the Mazda 3 is in its 3rd year of production. Also of note is that there is a higher trim Mazda 3 that comes with even more tech than the Civic (it also gets better fuel economy in that trim as well, thanks to Mazda's iELOOP system).
    I've got to hand it to Honda. They did their homework in the new Civic. However, we can thank Mazda for what they have done with their current crop of cars. Without them, the new Civic wouldn't be as good as it is. It makes me excited to see what Mazda has in store for their mid-cycle refresh of the 3 next year.

    I have a 2014 Mazda 3 on which I averaged 4.9l/100km on a highway trip of about 200kms, which comes to about 48mpg. I am super happy with my buy and I think it was way better than 2014 honda civic in almost all possible areas. 2016 honda civic has made lots of changes in a good direction but I still believe that Mazda 3 is a better vehicle, If you look inside the cabin of civic you will notice lots of cost cutting for example check out the glove box, if you open it there is no dampening and it just falls out, also there is very less padding on center arm rest and door arm rests. and for the infotainment system I would say its hands down better than honda's touch screen only with no physical buttons at all, mazda gives you the best of both worlds, and then comes the handling and dynamics part !!... I would say credit should go to Mazda for shaking up the boring segment of compact sedans !!

    I would still buy the Mazda, or at least give it a try. I had a 2006 Civic that had too many things break for me to consider another Honda. I had to replace the keys twice because they fell apart, replaced the driver side sun visor 5 times, the driver-side power window quite working, the manual shifter cracked in half, the door panel started peeling, the cruise control button stopped working and I had to replace the door lock mechanism. Also, the paint on the hood developed spider cracks all over, which it was recalled for. All this before 90,000 miles. It was nothing like the 1988 CRX I had for 10 years. And now the 2016 2.0L Civic has a stop sale for engine issues? Honda, what happened to you?

    From the drivers seat, the Mazda beats any Honda save the now gone S2000 hands down. Long haul driving on the dull interstate, yeah I want the Honda, but the curvy bits on highway 52, Mazda without question. Bullet proof reliability of the Honda is hard to argue with. Both are great safe cars too. IIHS gives the Mazda top safety pick for instance. I drive a Honda Fit with over 125 thousand miles on it, and it still goes great. Others on my team have over 200 hundred thousand on them. They just go and go. Awesome cars Honda makes. Now if they bring back the soul of the S2000, or CRX, and I am back to a Honda, until they stop making the most sporty Camry that is boring as heck. I'll get a Mazda as my 1st choice.

    I have a friend with the Mazda, it has had 0 issues. I own the 16 Civic with the 1.5L, this is the motor that isn't recalled. Unfortunately, I have the transmission surging issue. Picture someone rocking the car back and forth and that is the feeling you get driving at maintained highway speeds. Honda has no fix for this issue and won't do anything for my car. On top of that, my infotainment freezes as well. What I get is the radio will play no music on about every 10 starts of the car for 5-10 minutes of the drive and then all of a sudden it will come on. There are other small bugs that bother me less, almost every Civic has a misaligned hood on the drivers side by the windshield, the power emergency brake will occasionally not engage when the button is pushed, a restart is needed, the emergency braking will kick in if someone turns in front of you, etc. I'd stick with the Mazda until Honda engineers the bugs out of their cars.

    You are comparing Apples and Oranges. The honda has been re-designed for this particular reason, because Mazda knocked them off the podium, while the Mazda is a sleeking good car but it's in 3-4 year of productions. Wait and see what the new Mazda3 looks like and what can it be equipped with and you will see how it knocks down the Hondas, Toyotas and whatever else crosses its path. There are Mazda Trim levels that come with higher gadgets than honda's, and Honda can't beat the infotaiment system of Mazda because it is 2nd best after BMW.

    Some still think hondas are more reliable but I can confess that they are not any more reliable than mazdas. I owned 2 hondas and a mazda all from brand new, all 3 vehicles were problem free until they reached about 17 000 km and then the engines would start burning high amount of oil and become a bunch of other high cost repairs. Their reliability should be comparable, but on this review, the mazda has the edge. The mazda 3 in this 2.5L trim is still made in Japan, I would bet on its reliability over the american made civic.

Or did they just not want to re-record that piece of the review and said screw it just post it anyway.

    You should have compared a higher level trim Mazda 3. Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive cruise control come on the Mazda, and the Honda doesn't have blind spot monitors. You probably had your foot down more in the Mazda because it's more fun, and so you only got 28mpg. I guarantee if you drove the Mazda 3 and Civic in identical test runs the Mazda Skyactiv would beat it in fuel economy especially with the 2.0L. Poor comparison guys, you need to pick more apples to apples trims next time!

    The Honda turbo is really something to behold. I test drove an EX-T and was surprised how easy the turbo engine was getting away from a stop. It's definitely helped by the CVT (CVT cars generally have a better time going slow than cars without CVTs), but it has almost no lag. It really is hard to tell its turbocharged at all. My 2015 Volkswagen Golf is definitely not laggy, but the power delivery of the car clearly indicates a boosted motor, while the Honda engine sort of just feels like a more powerful naturally aspirated four cylinder.

      No. It really depends on driving situation, how you drive, tires and weight of the vehicle. Stop and go traffic, you can expect mid 20s to 28 mpg. If you drive on the highway a lot, expect low 30s mpg. My driving consists of highway and city, mostly city though, and I average around 8.8L/100km or 27mpg for Americans. I do have the 18 inch wheels though and currently have steelies on so that plays a factor in my fuel economy. Not bad though for a somewhat fun car to drive. It's the perfect balance between practical and fun though.

Plus the mazda has a thing called blind spot monitoring I'm not sure why they are so excited about a lanewatch camera which is useless compared to blind spot monitoring where it covers both sides. Civic looses due to lack of a feature or two the mazda has. Sure it has slightly more space but it has a cvt and that's about it.

    I believe the Civic has been recalled because of quality problems. My partner bought a brand new 2016 Touring Edition with Leather Seating and all the options. The car has been problems from Day 1 from the radio turning on and off at will to the heated seats coming on when they're not supposed to and just the other day, I discovered the entire turn signal assembly lamp on the driver side loose and falling out of place. These problems are inexcusable for a car like the Civic and the so called quality import cars. But, the biggest problem that drives me crazy every time I drive it is the surging felt on the road when cruising on the highway and trying to hold the car at a steady speed. This car almost has 10k miles now and it has been doing this surging ever since I can remember. I thought maybe it was the CVT, but who knows and the dealer can't seem to figure it out. All that being said, my family and I have always owned GM cars, and we've NEVER experienced problems like these. Kind of funny bc for the Civic Touring being almost 30 thousand dollars and how I've been told imports are so superior in quality, I wouldn't buy the new Civic with what I know now. P.S. All that new stuff like Lane Keeping Assist, the GPS and a lot of the features on this car are gimmicky. I prefer to drive the car the way it's meant to be driven, not have a computer driving it for me.
