So many memories watching that trip, was my stamping grounds back in the seventies and early eighties, you really did well .I know how long and hard that trip was. What an awesome achievement that tramp was for you. On a side note I recently went back to an area I hunted in the Kiamanawas 30 plus years ago with three of my sons for a look around with a rifle. I could not believe how many Sika we encountered over 4 days (20+) was a great time for us came back with heavy packs.

Cheers Glenn, first couple of days knocked the stuffing out of me a little bit, slowly came right after that! It's magical country and I'd do it again. Good to hear there's a few deer about and you had success 🙌 Cheers BRB

Great to see the video of the journey Glen! That Radix rehydrated meal you gave me on the trail was THE BEST. I enjoyed it on New Year's eve at Studholme hut - what an improvement from my usual fare. (It got me thinking about new de hy recipes. Plus, it was accompanied by a left behind beer.) Good to see the footage, and glad to to have met you!

A great video. Brought back memories of "Tear-ur-ring-out". I can remember arriving at the hut at mid-night to find the hut full.
I typically hunted 2 or 3 km SSW of the Kaipo swing bridge. Great hunting.
I even encountered 3 trout fishermen at the swing bridge who intended to follow the Kaipo down stream to the Mohaka. From there they fished and hunted following the Mohaka until they reached Mangtutu.
    Great country for adventure.

@@BackridgeButcher at 11,40 where the Boyd hut track intersection sign is, But it's also evident in other spots. Ferns and broadleaf shrubs that should be there are absent. Deer are extremely efficient selective grazers that can search out every last morsel of the most palatable plants. Pseudopanax, Coprosma, Astelia, Asplenium etc. Such forests look ok and green to the untrained eye but it's really like walking into a supermarket with all the shelves lightly stocked but only of Weetbix and flour. The fruit, meat, dairy aisles have long gone. A relative desert for birds.
The problem is that once forests are eaten out, it only takes a few deer to keep it that way, because the total biomass of tasty species is very low.
It's 50 years since I was there. We also went over Ahikaeaea .
