  • One easy plant to propagate by leaf cuttings is African violet (saintpaulia). In this video I'll show you the easy method to get started, and I'll also briefly discuss why this method may not be the right choice for "pinwheel" or other chimera saintpaulias.

    In a greenhouse in Northern Washington we stuck 20 or 25 long petiole leaves in a 1020 tray with steriized potting mix. After the baby was a mini plant we cut off the leaf and rooted it again. Some leaves were rooted 3 times on the petiole and 1 to 3 times on the leaf until it was a 1/3 leaf.

      Steam heat in pipes under the beds. Most were ferns, Begonias, ivy, primrose, perennials, Coleus and other high humidity plants. The Geranium greenhouses and some others for low humidity had infrared heat on the roof.

    😮 I didn’t realize that about the Chimera type. Please do a video. I have the purple and a pink one.
    Also, I do a lot of leaf propagation on my other varieties, how do you keep the soil moist without getting the leaves soaked? They don’t like that.

      Thanks. I did use a spray bottle, so the leaves were wet but only briefly because I didn't cover with the humidity dome.

    I have 2 plants. They are blooming a little but stay small. I put a light over them and fertilize. But yours grows new flowers that fast. Wow, beautiful. Congratulations, you're a pro.

    I'm a big fan of African Violets and other Streptocarpus! They are so easy to propagate and to care! I have an AV names Lituanika, it makes beautiful rose shape flowers.
    0:40 Pinguicula can also be propagated through leaf cuttings.

    Hi Jason, another good tutorial. We are told here in Perth West Australia that they don't like getting their leaves wet, and to water from lower down. Would you agree with that? Cheers, Lorraine.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  6 місяців тому +4

      Thanks Lorraine. It's reasonable advice to avoid prolonged moisture on the foliage, and watering from the bottom is one way to be sure. If you do water from the top, it's best to do so early in the day and in a spot with reasonable air flow, so that the foliage has a chance to dry down properly through the day.

      🌾Chimera African Violets have stripe flowers - mono chrome & stripe petals. They can not be reproduced by leaf cuttings.
      Cut the main stem about a third or more down the plant so that most of the center of the plant may be removed. This 'crown' you pot up and bag to make a mini-greenhouse effect with high humidity. The cutting will then root and produce a separate plant.

    AV is the easiest plant ever to root, as long as there's moisture in the soil, but not any moisture staying on the leaves.

    I'm not sure how African Violets would do here in my climate, but I just might have to give them a try because they are definitely well suited for the wind being a low ground cover type of plant.
    Seems that they would do well in the cracks and crevices of the lava.
    Guess I will be finding out.🤙

      It'll be more like a desert ground cover up here, but I guess it does create a nice image. Palm trees swaying in the hurricane force winds and lava rock as far as the eye can see.🤣
      Oh yeah, and African violets peeking out every once in a while.😂

    • @CricketsBay
      @CricketsBay 6 місяців тому

      They're native to a dry, semi-arid, almost desert. African Violets would probably do fine in the desert, provided they get a little water every month or so. People at my job site leave them unwatered on their desk for 6 month (along with the poor succulents) and those African Violets are still alive.

      This is high desert, 1,400m/4,600ft elevation with a misty fog that sweeps in throughout the day depending on temperatures that vari from 4C/38F in early morning now during winter to 30C/86F on summer days.
      The winds right now are about 60kph/40mph and have been over 130kph/100mph this year and will be anywhere in between from now until March.
      There will also be major rain storms with high winds and up to 15 centimeters/6inches of rain per day.
      The weather is actually quite dramatic in this particular location.
      However, the African violets, at least some species will do well up here, I just need to formulate a soil mixture that will retain enough moisture in the driest times and still drain well during the storms this time of year.
      The challenges here are...
      No running water, catchment systems only and completely off grid, no electricity except for generators and solar panels, plus the wind is too extreme for turbine generators, but I am building an experimental wind generator that will hopefully be able to handle the wide variances of wind speed this next year.
      It will be interesting to see how well and which varieties do best up here.
      The flowering plants are mainly to provide consistent food sources for the pollinators throughout the year, the majority of my plants and trees are food bearing and all are on a tight budget of water, so adding plants is a necessary calculation to make sure they can either survive on their own or require as little water as possible.
      Most of my plants have roles on the property from food sources to wind barriers as well as life enhancers.
      For example, the roses I have are varieties that are useful for rose hip/petal teas, pollinator food sources, and they provide beauty and aroma during their time in bloom. Chamomile is another multi-use plant that provides a flavored drink source, color, aroma, and food source for pollinators, as well as healthy treat for my dogs, cats, chickens, and the wildlife that might venture by.
      There is much to consider when I look at any plants to add because I have over 300 fruit trees and food source plants as well as pollinator attractors and food sources.
      The African violets will be a rare novelty I am adding as a soil holder, pollinator attractor, and color feature.
      I also have Prickly Pear cactus as a fruit, pollinator attractor, and desert appropriate feature.

    I've had good luck getting AV leaves to root, but I've struggle some when they are transferred into a pot to grow in. Could it be the soil was too moist? It doesn't look like you've had problems with that. Thanks. I'm looking forward to the video on Chimera.

    Hey Jason - Rose question for you.
    I took some cuttings from a Gentle Hermione David Austin rose. I put 3 in a 1 gallon pot, and 2 of the 3 have taken, and they're about 6 inches high right now.
    Should I leave them together in the 1 gallon pot until spring and then plant them out, or should I seperate them into their own containers.
    I'm growing them under grow lights on a shelf in my kitchen.
    Thanks!

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm

    I cannot seem to get mine to rebloom. I’ve tried real light and artificial light. I’ve tried using fertilizer, consistent watering schedule and others have said to let them dry out because they are more of the cactus family. What’s the proper way to take care of these plants? 😅

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  6 місяців тому +2

      I haven't grown them for long, but everything I've been told so far by more experienced growers is to keep conditions right down the middle: room temperature, good light but not too much, around 50% humidity, consistent moisture but in a well-drained light soil. The one other thing I've read is that they really don't need to be repotted into a much larger pot - and seem happy a little on the tight side.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  6 місяців тому +3

      Thanks Mike. I haven't grown them for long myself, but the advice I got from a more experienced grower is that they don't much mind being snug in the pot, so long as the potting mix is well drained and they're getting regular watering. I'll cross my fingers that I can get bloom from the new ones & strong rebloom from the original plant.
