Fun fact: there exists an official Wii Remote that was given out on Club Nintendo only in Japan that actually worked as a TV remote for some TV brands. For example, a TV with the "Sharp" brand should work with the remote.
I actually have one in box. It's very cool. It might work with your tv even if it isn't on the list with trial and error. Mine works with Samsung, but isn't a Samsung tv.
this wouldn't work: the IR leds are on the sensor bar itself, the wiimote has an IR camera to sense the location of two spots of infrared light (this is also the reason why you can substitute a sensor bar with a couple of candles)
