Today Richard Wagner is best known for his extraordinary operas; any success in other domains was dwarfed by these compositional feats in the world of musical theatre. But Wagner’s piano works can be seen to be just as important in understanding the evolution of his style and musical thought, and thus the development of this dominating figure of the 19th century.
The collection brings together Wagner’s entire output for solo piano. The earliest sonata on the recording is the Piano Sonata in B flat, which shows evidence of Wagner’s music education, with much indebted to the Beethovian model as well as to the great pianist-composers Weber and Pleyel. These influences are heard again in the more mature and complex Große Sonate - a work that Wagner intended to turn into a symphony, though this attempt was later abandoned. A regular dedicatee of Wagner’s works was Mathilde Wesendock - the relationship between the two is still much debated today - and among the works in this collection, three are dedicated to Mathilde: the ‘masterpiece’ Eine Sonate für das Album von Frau Mathilde Wesendock, Notenbrief für Mathilde Wesendonck and the ‘Schluß zum Vorspiel’ from Tristan und Isolde. The ‘Tristan chord’ at the beginning of the latter has become considered a clear attestation of Wagner’s infatuation with Mathilde, for whom he stopped work on the Ring cycle to begin that great testament of love, Tristan und Isolde.
The works are performed by the Italian pianist Pier Paolo Vincenzi, whose busy concert schedule takes him all over his native country. He is joined for the Polonaise for 4 hands in D by Federica Ferrati.

this music.. it touches me in a way no other does. you know sometimes in this chaotic turbulent world, we get lost.
i never really had friends. ever since i was a young child, i loved classical music. i loved nature, and solitude. i suffer from anxiety, especially around big crowds. recently ive discovered wagner. a year ago, when i was 13 i stumbled on tannhauser overture. and my interest grew from there. i feel this music reflects, defines my whole being. it makes my hands tremble, i get goosebumps all over, i cry.. it feels like i long for a lost time. its that strange feeling, euphoric but at the same time, a deep longing. i never felt i belonged anywhere. i was bullied very much from early on.. and this impacted my mental health.
but when i listen to this, i feel at home.
wagner himself may not have been the best person, and i definitely disagree with his racism/antisemitism. but, its silly to bring up all this. after all, we come here for music, not politics.

I'm so sorry this has been your experience with other people. I, too, have found solace in Classical music. It has a way of reaching deep inside in a way nothing else does. I LOVE nature TOO! Hang in there.

If you have not listened to Lohengrin yet, do so. The prelude to Act 1 is especially delicate and beautiful. I found it about 25 years ago and it cannot be surpassed.
If you are only 14 as of the writing of this I wish you a long, adventurous, joyous, and blessed life. Don't be afraid of the crowds...many of them are automatons just making their way through their days checking off the boxes as they go. They are truly to be pitied for being convinced they are nothing more than cogs in the machine. Remember that you are unique... and can have great positive impact on your world if you make the right choices. Take some calculated risks, make a few mistakes, love and allow yourself to be loved, and NEVER sell yourself short. Remember, you are being moved by the 150 year old music of a man who had some flaws and grew up in a time where daily life was grossly more difficult than today (for many in the world).
Perhaps something you do will be read, or heard, or seen by someone in 2171 who says, "This ______ touches me in a way no other does..."
Cheers and Happy New Year young padiwan.

Feel for you. His music is transcendental and healing for the soul. But as the widely spread belief that he was some evil antisemitic is mostly shared in circles who don't put any effort in learning about him, his life and his personality but just go by what they are told I can assure you that the more you learn about him you will find that he indeed wrote a paper that could be considered hateful but also for the reason that besaid people did him a lot of harm. So maybe not 100% of a perfect character but still better than most of us and leaving behind music that brings happiness, deep emotional experiences and inspiration to the world. Who are we to even think that we can criticise a man like that??

"In the first sonata, WWV 85, there is for sure all the dramatic turbulance of Wagner's emotional scenes, hinting at Tristan und Isolde; the end return theme, dreamy as a knight's dream of longing, of romantic idyll, or so it seems with M° Vincenzi in capturing the Wagner we know."

(Daniela Freitas, escritora , pensadora, poetisa, historiadora)
    Viva Wagner.

I always knew Herr Wagner was not a great pianist (as with a handfull of other past great composers), as many other great composers that were virtuoso pianists. Though these pieces are wonderful, even though I am quite sure that he could not perform many of them himself. It's interesting to me as well, because although I'm a decent pianist, I am also more of a composer, and use the piano mainly for composing "sketch" ideas for my piano melodies, chamber, and orchestral pieces. Thank you for sharing this wonderful post....Peace!

Agree. Very little of what I like about Wagner's music and what makes it special is in these pieces. Other composers did this sort of thing better.

You know what they say, those that can't create art, music, literature, or that have any special hard earned talent themselves, become critics. All serious musicians, composers, artists, playwrights, scientists, and any music listener with even the smallest cultural level see right through people like you.
