I know what you mean. People stare at you when you have a camera. I am taking on the challenge. I am going to go out and take some street shots. I think being able to improvise in the moment makes a person a better photographer. Thanks for showing us the city of Toronto.
You got this!
Yeah, some people do look at you weird when you're black with a camera. At 20.03 mins into the video, I noticed that woman in the white top clutching to her purse when she saw Carty and his camera, hilarious. Keep doing your thing man. Bless!!!
@@leroydias5075as an older white woman, I just want to say that in general we get a little more clutchy of our bags in alleys and such and I think I instinctually become more clutchy if I am alone trying to do this street thing when any man is straggling around alone, black or white. I didn’t notice the scene you mentioned but now I have to go look. But I guess my point is I have observed older ladies do the exact same thing to me when I am out alone with a camera, and I am a 55 yo white women. But I hear ya on the racial profiling thing. They get all wigged out. This is so fun, though.
@@leroydias5075I just watched it twice. That’s not what happened AT ALL. Drama.
She turned her body around which made her dangly phone purse flap about so she steadied it with her hand. 🤦🏼♀️
I love shooting candid pictures because people are being their natural selves!
I like to mix both. It’s great to break the barrier and ask as well.
It's amazing that you're the kind of keeping it real type of person. I really love that about your content and the fact that you make it clear that this is actually not easy for you to make this kind of portraits. It's just great about you and your authenticity. I love your channel's content!
thanks florian.. appreciate you
100mm gives you a bit of distance, it can help with that whole social anxiety, I do like primes but probably one of the lenses I enjoy most shooting street is 18-200 on a 7DII. I often have an idea of composition in.lind but then when you're out walking around I see those moments when you see someone and you need that reach to frame them and having the versatility os clutch. You can shoot with a prime and crop in, in post, or zoom with your feet, but being able to shoot wide to get the context of the environment and fish for people to walk into frame is enjoyable, but I do often see subjects from a distance and just really need that reach to catch them. I do enjoy shooting an adapted manual lenses adapted to Sony at times too.
awesome and amazing work!!!!
Thanks a lot! appreciate you.
Always love getting your take on the photography life. lol this is my second time watching this session and I am still picking up on new info. I am amazed at the volume of amazing street art. I shoot a lot in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Detroit and none of those places holds up to the volume of Toronto. There is a great no brick left behind concept over there. I need to take a trip over there to check it out for myself
Come up. I’ll set up a group photo walk.
I can’t believe I’m just now discovering you and your content. Amazing!!
I enjoyed the photowalk. If shooting street I recommend a small compact camera like a Fuji, it makes you look like a tourist and most people aren’t bothered.
Thx!
Thank you for taking us around your city and allowing us to gain inspiration from the way you approach taking street photographs ❤
thanks so much for watching
I was a TTC driver back in the day,,,now living in an oil town in northwest Alberta and hating it! This video is pure nostalgia for me. Thank you Carty.
Toronto isn’t going anywhere. Home is wherever you are.
I've just stumbled upon your channel, Carty. Love at first sight! I enjoyed being along for the ride, learned a few tricks about taking street photography portraits, AND as a huge bonus, got to wander the streets of Toronto with you. I've lived in the States for far too long (28 years -- ouch) and have learned to love several cities here (favourites include Chicago, Denver, and Cleveland), but Toronto will always be my "home city". I grew up 2 hours east of Toronto, attended York University, and started my career working downtown with the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs. Wandering the streets of a great city with a camera, especially on a sunny day in late August (or late May) is pretty much heaven in my books. I'm looking forward to exploring more of your great work!
thx so much doug. SteveCarty.com | theCARTYMETHOD.com 👑
loved this one, specially as I'm heading out with my new Fujifilm x100v to shoot some street photography tomorrow. awesome work Steve!
YOU DID A GREAT JOB - IT TAKES COURAGE 👍 AND WHEN IT IS OVER, VERY SATISFYING WITH THE CAPTURES.

Blackbird… love that song and it’s a feel good song and karma giving back to you as you do what you were put here to do. Make pictures!
Let’s go Willie.
Great video and series of shots. Chris rocked. Love that song. Solid cover. Social anxiety ✊
i hate that at 53 i still deal with this shit. i battle it. but it's still here. i gear up, go out and face that shit. it's the only way i got from shy and invisible to who you see today.
Dope video & info
Appreciate it
I enjoy your velvet voice!
You’re kind. Thank you

Thx. It’s CARTY. Chat gpt won’t get my name right unless you input the correct spelling. If you’re going to use AI, check the work it’s doing.
@@stevecarty I think you need better diction. Anyway, thank you for the like.
Did you use chat gpt to grab this summary?
Did you notice that may name was spelled incorrectly?
I appreciate you adding chapters for those that want them. I left them out. If you feel it would be helpful perhaps I’ll add them to this video.
What is your issue with my question, asking about how you grabbed this summary, and the spelling of my name?
You seem like a details person. I’d assume you’d catch my point.
Mannnnnnnnnnnnnn I love your pro tips and tricks this was really cool to help with that anexity, stay dope! 😎📸
Appreciate you.
This was so fun. Love the rabbits your friend does. And nice work! I’m an introverted shy shooter as well. It’s tough.
thx so much mish.
My old stomping ground, God its been 10 years since I shot that alley!!! Some of the same tags from back in the day. Great video.
Thx for commenting
And watching. Appreciate you so much.
I'm enjoying this video. Toronto looks like a good place for street photography. I'm marveling at how you can shoot with sunglasses on.
20 Years of being in the darkroom has made my eyes ultra sensitive to sunlight. My eyes water if I’m outside without them instantly.
I'm glad the algorithm suggested you to me. I've owned a camera for four months now and I'm learning a lot from you. Thanks for putting in this work!
appreciate you
Thanks again!
Holy street art 🤩
my fav place for street art is london uk. makes this look average. but for a city, this one is painted.
Beautiful photos

Really cool video, love your confidence and overall energy 👍
Thank you so much 😁
I watched this when you were live and I’m watching it again. I really enjoy being able to see the images you took now. Definitely agree on your shots of the guitar guy.
appreciate you
We love you Carty, you're amazing!
appreciate you.
You do it so effortless it’s nice man.
Appreciate you
I believe this is the first Behind the Picture Podcast I've watched of your. This is amazing and inspiring by itself. I'm so glad I joined the Carty Party.
Glad you’re here.
I really, really enjoyed the vibe of this video and the portraits you took. Great work!

You’re so kind. Thank you so much for your donation. Appreciated!
You're my favorite photographer. You give such good advice. I plan to get out and do some street photography. I think that is my favorite form. I believe in asking potential subjects prior to photographing them. It's more of a courtesy thing for me. I like to carry my Rocketbooks (erasable notebooks) so they can give me their email and phone numbers so I can send them copies of my work.
You got this Patricia.
Thanks man, nice work!
thanks so much for watching.
Chris o day can sing and play!
indeed. he got much love from this.
Damn Chris gave you a sound track...that moment was dope.
it's liquid with this street photography. it's new to me. but it makes me a more observant compassionate shooter. helps with my editorial portrait life. stevecarty.substack.com

Beautiful rendition of Black Bird by Chris. Great photos of him there as well... 🔥
he had talent for sure.
I can't believe you passed up that dude on the ladder. What lines and angle and color????? Dude!
which is why we all shoot our own photographs. this video makes you go out and see. we can't control other seers.
Man! New subscriber here digging your style your channel let's gooooo!
appreciate you
I would love to catch you live .
It looks like some of the subjects don't want to have pictures taken of them.
What do you think about this Telesin GoPro neck mount? I'm worried about it dangling back and forth. But it looks more comfortable than a chest mount.
I have it. It’s better than the chesty.
Chris was good 👍
Did somebody mention photo walks in TO!? Sign me up!
Join my mailing list. Details are there for sundays photowalk. stevecarty.substack.com
Thanks for the tour. So if I take a photo walk, would it be okay to use pix as reference photos for future oil paintings?
absolutely.
I’m going to start asking for the photo
Or keep stealing them.
I Love your style and teaching abilities that you are sharing on your channel. FYI random comment I will throw in. I have trouble seeing my screen while wearing sunglasses. Does that cause you any issues?
I use lighter tint glasses when I’m wearing them. Make sure your glasses are pushed up on your face and you get your eye right into the viewfinder. If you still have issues try a different frame shape / lighter lenses. Make sure you’re not shooting with polarizers or ND filters.
@@stevecarty thanks for the very thoughtful and helpful suggestions👍🙏📸😊
what camera do you use to record this video?
hey .. this one i shot on the gopro hero 9. i have the hero 11 now for this type of content. unfortunately shot at 1080. you can watch this similar shorter video shot in 4k. ua-cam.com/video/nN9NRHhrcRQ/v-deo.htmlsi=Nd43oS_Ldop1mR2o
I thought that you needed mode releases for photos that you make money with. How do you get around that?
i don't make money for these photographs. i can't sell them or use them to advertise products. they are my work and i can show them freely here and in my portfolio if i wish.
Watching a live stream isn't easy, especially when you don't live in the same country. 😂
I'm going to post a message in your Discord channel.
Ok..I got it...therapy...do the thing that makes u uncomfortable...soooooo good! I got the neck thingie and I'm out! Thank you!!
You're so welcome!
Whats the location ???
Toronto. Around queen st west
Odd that Carty hasn't moved to LA.
lol... if i move, it'll be a bit further south than California. Likely Costa Rica.
if clients start finding me down there and i start getting flown down there again like back in the days of record companies and big budgets, I may just appear on Sunset Blvd. The homeless issues, and being an american, no free health care and so many other things have kept me from jumping over my 30yrs doing this. I just border jump. Get gig, fly down, do gig. fly home. It's how it's always been.
@@stevecarty I am with you. I am in S. Florida now and am constantly thinking about Brazil or Panama --as soon as they get Uber Eats everywhere I am gone for sure.
@@stevecarty I think you would love Portland, Seattle and LA, just for the photos and photo spots --people and events and the art scenes. Just unmatched for content in those cities, like NYC and street photography: there are few better places.
Certainly the eye of the photographer matters in capturing an excellent fotos. But an excellent camer never hurts. What camera and lens would you suggest for excellent street fotography at a reasonable price?
It’s such an open question. And I’m not a street photographer. I’m an editorial photographer but I shoot street for stying sharp.
@stevecarty I understand you. Question of curiosity, what lens do you find yourself going to most often, your go-to lens or favorite lens for how you normally shoot?
IRL …. Meaning not AI generated
looks similar to Melbourne
Ya? I’ve never been on a plane as long as it takes to get from here to there but I hope I get to one day.
Very cool walk-thru. And thank you for the experience and education. But please note that I do NOT think it is cool to photograph the homeless or spaced-out drug addicts. Not at all. You might have captured a colorful or light rich image; but in fact you're recording people at their lowest points in life. You image doesn't say that, as they're really good; but because you filmed it, I know you did as I watched it happen in real time. So I am very mixed with your approach to art. You're good; but I am inclined to not like the nature of it's creation (based only upon this video).
There are opinions on this. Lots. Too much to go into here. But you should make your own content and speak about it. We all have a voice. Use yours to make your own statements rather than judging mine. Only god can judge me. I have the courage to do this thing. Whether you support or not, don’t think your opinion in a fact. It’s just your perspective.
Actually, no. I am allowed to judge you too. As is everyone you publicly share your work with. I shared how I felt because you asked for my input when you made your video public and asked for comments. God does't need (or have) a UA-cam account. I told you that I really liked your photos and learned that the only way I could tell that some of you subjects were homeless or drugged-up was because of your live stream video -- because your pictures were so colorful and "in the mood" that I wouldn't have otherwise known. But knowing made me uncomfortable. PS: I do publish my own work and accept criticism as well as praise. @@stevecarty I applaud your ability to address your fear of social anxiety via street walks; but there is no courage in taking pictures of drugged-up homeless people that cannot object.
canada seems so basic
lol. Ya free health care,
No guns. So basic.
