Yeah, this will not work at all. The correct way to do this is by using a simple polygon, then on the x axes add a bunch of lines for the amount of extruded part, and a bunch of lines on y for the amount of circular details. then use the modifier "bend" this will bend your polygone on the y axe and then in that same modifyer you can make a kind of up and down in the end of the bending making the mechanism work.
