You are so welcome! Totally NOT my idea though...been around for many many years, I'm just sharing some of the practical ideas to make it easy.
Thanks for stopping in 6 t

Great idea.My plane feels tail heavy.I just painted my whole plane.I hate the EPO foam look.

With your calpers and the plane on the balancer use the tail end the piece of wire that sticks out is the same as the distance between the calpers points.

I need to make one of these. gets annoying using your fingers on some planes lol. My p51 seemed tail heavy on their specs too, definitely have to use this to get it perfect.

I'll post a flight video soon too, so we can see how the CG impacts the flight performance.
      Thanks for watching!

Is your P-51 the smaller 1.1m (Dallas Doll?), or the 1.2m Blondie??? I've got the 1.2m Blondie, and love it! No CG issues with that one for me.

Great video. I think, when you’re doing the CG on a plane with retracts, the gear should be down. Just a thought. I read that in one of my instruction manuals throughout the years I’ve spent building airplane models.

I've heard down is generally the rule of thumb, especially when the gear down situation changes forward, but on this plane...I suspect it's probably not a huge factor as they swing out more or less straight out...some jets the two mains go back and the nose gear go forward, or all three move back...this can cause a kinda hairy situation if you get too tail heavy for landing ;)

i know this is an old video but i feel alot of my rc warbirds that tend to LOOK like their flying Tail Heavy iis because there is not enough down angle on the motor mount, so i usually just put 2 shims on the top side of the motor mount to help it fly more level all around.

I believe there was quite a bit of down and right on this molding, but I could check it out. Thanks!

@@BrianPhillipsRC it doesnt take much just a few degrees of angle and its a whole different flying plane! Hence why when people rebuild a crashed plane it never flys the same.

This is nothing new. Made one of these way back in 1974, when I first started flying Radio Control. In fact I have one in my RC work area right now and just used it last week on 2 different planes Jumbo pencils work better. They have a larger diameter eraser area. Also a 2 x 6 is more stable. BTW you should always check CG with the landing gear retracted (if they retract especially aft) and a low or low mid-wing plane upside down!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  7 років тому +2

I realize these have been around for ages. Nothing new under the sun, right!
I do like your "jumbo pencil" idea! I'll probably buy some and give my kids pencils back. There happened to be round, rather than octagonal, but the erasers were crappier on the kids style.
I always vet CG with Gear Up (retracted), but in this case, with side swinging gear, there wasn't too much a difference. I have a few planes with gear that rock back toward the tail, and that can make a weird effect for landing, especially some heavy all metal gear!.
As for the 2X6, I was thinking about using the 2X8, but then I figured it'd just get to huge and get in the way. It took about 3 times longer since I filmed it (as usual....this was a 5 minute build)

BTW the Jumbo pencils I found were round and about 1/2 inch in diameter. Work well for up to about a 7 lb airplane. More than that and you must be careful they don't poke through the airplane skin. I think I got the pencils at Lowes.
