Never used gaffer tape but may give that a go and a couple of the others I've not used.
I like using an old snare head. Gives a great funky sound imo.
One thing you didn't tell us is which is your favourite?

At first without ring is more beautiful sound. It's like the snare is singing. With ring It's sounds flat and not alive.
