- Watching planes takeoff and land from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as seen from top of Hayden Butte. Captured with a Canon 50D set at ISO 100 and Tv=5seconds. After nautical twilight, changed camera setting to manual with Tv=5seconds and Av=8.0. Combination of 720 still images processed with Photoshop CS3 and Final Cut Express 4.0. Video saved as an Improved MPEG-4 1620x1080 Video at 16384Kbs.

Exceptional work here. Really great exposure+shutter control to keep the the image consistent as the sun sets. Just wondering, what is the focal length you used? Im assuming something telephoto so you could shoot far, compress distance, and show all the activity?

@NikolaiUA The camera's focused in on Runways 7L & 7R. Pretty sure those on the right side of the screen are coming in and landing on Rwy 8 on the North side of the complex.
The location is written in the "About" section of the video, along with a complete description of how the video was shot.
@nbaltz And thats why at the end of the clip it looks like the airport break lights turned on.

I see a pattern in that the planes make the final turn for their runway relatively late in the descent.

This video was shot between 6:30PM-7:30PM. Each frame is a 5 second exposure, so the 24 seconds of video equates to one hour of real time.
The winds were out of the east on this night, so PHX was initially landing planes out of the west. This is why you see the sunset in the background. After 7:30PM, the winds died down and PHX resumed their normal flight path of landing planes from the east. I stopped the time lapse after this 7:30PM transition.
How far is Peoria from Phoenix???
Why are there some planes on the right turning from base and then just flying upwind parallel to the runway without landing?
