Music: 'Freedom Fighters' by Two Steps from Hell
    Editor: David Peterson
Serving Suggestion: 1080p, lights off, volume up :)
Inspired by a version of the opening sequence of this clip called 'What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth?' (Inspiration: • What does it feel like... ), I tracked down the original time-lapse sequence taken on the International Space Station (ISS) via NASA, found some additional ones there, including the spectacular Aurora Australis sequences, and set it to a soundtrack that almost matches the awe and wonder I feel when I see our home from above.
To those brave men and women who fly alone in the night to take us to the stars, we salute you.
    -----------------------
    Sequences:
0:00 North-to-south down the western coast of North and South America.
0:48 North-to-south over Florida, the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands.
0:56 South-East Asia, approaching the Philippine Sea
1:04 Western Europe, from France through Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East.
1:20 Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean, approaching Australia
1:36 Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean.
1:52 Aurora Australis, unknown location in the Southern Hemisphere.
    -----------------------
Featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day!
    apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120305.html
Explanation from NASA: Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.

***** they have many other uses such as collecting data about the earth (such as its magnetic field and the effects of cosmic radiation), GPS, television, cellphones, etc. A decent number of them have telescopes and many other tools for studying and observing the rest of the universe (or as much of it as we can with current technology).

    • @Jambax
      @Jambax 8 років тому +8

+IUse TheForce The reason you can't see them is because you haven't taken into account the incredible scale of things. Satellites range in size from 10cm cubes (cubesats) to things like the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope which is the size of a tennis court when unfolded (but that won't be in earth orbit). The Hubble Telescope is one of the largest (excluding the space station), and it's only the size of a bus.
When the satellites are in space, there are several thousands of kilometers between you and the next one. Even though there are so many up there, they are still incredibly spread apart. There are actually only around 2,500 satellites in total in Earth orbit. There are however, around 22,000 tracked objects in low-earth-orbit that are pieces or fragments of space craft, some no larger than 10cm across. Even with 20/20 vision, and the eyes of a hawk, you'd still never be able to spot them.
You simply cannot see them at that scale, they are absolutely tiny compared to the earth. Humans have difficulty imagining things of such scale, which I suspect is why people find it hard to believe this.

    • @Jambax
      @Jambax 8 років тому +2

+Stefan773 There are only around 2500 satellites in Earth orbit in total, not 35,000. See my response to IUse TheForce as to why you would never be able to see them and what most of those objects actually are.
Orbits work very simply. Imagine throwing a tennis ball at the horizon, it keeps falling right? How hard would you have to throw it, before it kept falling forever? That's all an orbit is. Orbits are a careful balance between speed around the earth and the force of gravity pulling down on it. Quite simple really. The closer to earth you are, the faster you have to travel to stay in orbit. What this also means, is that every altitude in an orbit has a specific speed you have to travel at, to maintain a circular orbit.
Satellites in Geostationary orbit therefore, have to be approximately 37,000km away. They are still traveling incredibly fast (around 4-5Km/s I think for that altitude), but they spin at the perfect rate with the Earth to hover right above the same spot. They do still move, but not in relation to the ground. Imagine you're driving - and a bird flies above your car at the same speed your driving at. The bird would appear to be hovering yes? It's exactly like that.
The main point however - is why would anybody even bother to fake this? What's in it for them exactly? That's the part I find most baffling about this.
Most of the satellites in orbit are used for communication. They're also used for surveillance, and of course - scientific research. Radio towers have shit line-of-sight, and undersea cables are stupidly expensive to maintain and repair.

It is very curious how some people deny the fact of space exploration,
for it being "too complex and difficult to even be possible" yet they
don't even give a second thought to the fact that they're expressing
their ignorant opinion through a machine, which has the capability of
uncanny accuracy and precision to manipulate single electrons to operate
billions of mathematical calculations per second inside a one inch by
one inch piece of silica and gold, which are turned into graphic
information by thousands of tiny lamps working in perfect conjunction.
This machine consumes as much energy as a light bulb, and is connected
via electromagnetic waves to a globe-wide network of information, which
is contained in millions of synchronized electronic discs which store
and manage almost unintelligible amounts digital data. Those machines
are powered by streams of electrons which travel kilometers inside
copper wires, from their source in a facility which transforms the many
forms of energy in nature into usable electricity. All this seems
negligible, but shooting a missile into the sky with enough accuracy to
come close to another planet seems impossible. Who understands them.

Once upon a time there was a bacteria on a basketball.
The bacteria stretched its flagella across the surface of the basketball and it sensed a rough rubbery surface. The bacteria concluded "The world is made of rubber" for it perceived nothing else
The bacteria looked to the basketballs horizon, and it looked flat for the bacteria was too small to see its curvature. "The world is flat" Said the bacteria, for it perceived nothing else
The bacteria tried to travel across the basketball. It moved for hours, but its slow microscopic movement only traveled 1mm across the basketball.
"The world is a plane that stretches to infinity" said the bacteria, for it perceived nothing else
The basketball slowly rolled across the floor of the court, and the bacteria looked up to see the ceiling lights fly by. "the suns revolve around the world" the bacteria said, for it could conclude no greater truth in its limited imagination

It's not CGI. As I've documented in the FAQ (here: randomphotons.com/alone ), some graphical glitches were introduced into the video due to the way I slowed the original time lapse down, and I chose to boost the brightness and saturation.
If you want to critique the images themselves, examine the original photos. Here's one example:
      eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos/photo.pl?mission=ISS028&roll=E&frame=33400
There are thousands of others, and if you care, I can get you the specific links for some of the other sequences in the video.
Have a look at that image and let me know what parts are fake.
