I'm a disabled landscape photographer and have spent the last few years shooting almost all of my work from the driving seat or side door of my camper. It really makes you think and try to come up with interesting compositions!

I'll bet. I was surprised at how many times I had to manoeuvre the van ever so slightly. It would have been impossible during the busier times.

Disabled vet as well, shooting from the car or my buddies van is more my speed these days. I even use long telephotos to get close ups from the side of the road. My 400mm rarely shoots beyond 20 feet LOL

Love the van. We had a VW type 2 bay window for 15 yrs and the best advice I got was from a friend who had theirs stolen. He got it back but in terrible condition. He convinced me to find the main red positive ignition cable coming from the ignition and trace it to somewhere secluded ( in our case on the outside of the rear of the glove compartment box ) and put a break switch in it where it cant be found if you didnt know it was there. Simply lean across and flick the switch as you get out of the van.
I did so and the confidence that, even if it is broken into when you are off somewhere in the wilds, it will still be there when you get back was worth its weight in gold. 😊

Dare I say that these were some of the best photographs that I have seen from you? Simple, beautiful, straightforward and no gimmick photography. No ND, no Grad, no two zillion megapixel 9 axis IBIS front and backlit sensor. Just a roll of film and a camera that is about as old as photography itself. Well done.

Days like this are hard but they are the ones you will remember. You carried on quite well, Thomas. One tip about shooting from the van window: that pillow is a PITA and doesn't work well. I use a piece of 1or 2 inch foam pipe insulation that you can pick up at any hardware store. It will clip right on to your window and make a steadier platform that that pillow. And it will stay in place when you take the camera inside. I use my truck as a mobile bird blind and do most of my spring migratory warbler shooting right from the window. A piece of foam pool noodle will work, too, but won't last as long.

I have used Rode Wireless Go and Go 2’s for a couple of years to both video and, last year, live stream weddings. I never have a problem with them as long as you make sure the transmitter has line of sight of the receiver. And remember that with the Go 2 you get on board back up audio on each transmitter you can download.

I got to Rocky National Park day and a half delayed due to a flight cancellation. Stressed out from arriving at the campsite at 11 pm at night, I only had 1/2 a day in the park. I went on a early morning hike and it just started chucking down. I got back to the car soaking wet, and I drove off. My mood was as dark as the clouds. I drove up Trail Ridge Road and in the raining mist I saw a 14 point Elk sitting on the side of the road, I watched it for 15 minutes grazing in the rain, and then walked off. I realized that if it was a sunny day, that moment would have been fleeting at best, and I realized that what is will be, and my mood soared as I went on my Colorado adventure. I hope your following days are better, but even a bad day photographing is better than a good day in the office.

Hi Thomas, great video, really brings home the photo life, and so sorry, the funniest one yet. At 5:43 into it shows a "sand bar" jetting out into the sea and a perfect "right slide" wave braking infront of it; perfect for surfing, and with no one out. You stumbled on what every surfer is looking for on this planet. Taking everything into consideration, I wouldn't give its location away. Just marvel.Then-again-too, if you do want to discover it you can name the spot any name you want, and it will stay that name for all of History.

I've had my fair share of Scottish weather as well. I booked a trip to the Isle of Skye in December 2019 and all I've got was three days of misery - with one notable exception. On the very last day we drove to Elgol and for some brief 45 minutes we had spectacular light and a glorious sky. It was still worth it. Got one of my favorite shots there of all time!

I love this video Thomas. I shoot from my truck a lot because of wind, and too a lesser extent snow. With a full-time day job, my chances to shoot this time of year are typically at night and alone, so wandering about is easy pickings for the local wildlife. Anyway, I use the safety of my truck frequently and was very refreshing to see you shoot in this manor! I get my tripod setup inside the vehicle. Two legs (not extended) down along the driver side door and I extend the third leg across the passenger seat and prop it against the passenger door for stability. Works great especially with a bowl tripod mount which can be adjusted for level. Give it a chance next time. Keep up the great work!

I liked all the images except the rain spattered window. My favorite was the one where you did not like the framing. I guess it is because you favor soft, pastel colors, and that one had something more brassy and contrasty. But sir, you honor us with your intense efforts to amuse us and teach us despite the inclement weather. You can get interesting atmosphere on a dreary, wet day. Or you can lay sodden in bed and read a book. Thanks for choosing the brave path.

That's color weather, without a doubt. Black and white would have three shades of gray (or grey, in your part of the world) -- and two of those would be almost indistinguishable. Color film, with the right exposure, can still make interesting images even in blowing, drizzling, dull weather like that.
BTW, I *really* like Image 6, the one where you lost the sound to the mic cutting out. That would look great printed about a meter square...

Looks like a monopod might be a useful addition to your van kit. Cheers! Lovely image at 4:08.

Hey @DJI you need to send Thomas a set of the new dji mics to evaluate. Show him how good they are over the Rode mics.

These road trips of yours have been so much better to watch than your time with camera frustrations. Yes, you still have problems but with a much better spirit. It’s the kind of thing that drew me here in the first place. And I love those disabled Vets comments! Challenged but pressing on! 😊

Tom, just been watching video by Duade Paton, Aussie wildlife vlogger and he talked about ride wireless 2 go stopping recording. He said if you do short press of the on-off button on transmitter it pauses the recording without turning transmitter off. Maybe you have been knocking the button by mistake ?
Apologies if someone has already said this but couldn't face going through all the comments!

I am impressed by how you still spot and get great images despite terrible conditions. I tend to see conditions like that and think to myself “it’s not worth bothering today”.

One thing you can do for Rode mic is always record with 2 mics. You will increase your chances of getting the audio.. Both may not lose the same bit of audio while recording.
