What I would really like to know is are there trends in thr age of these SSDs and seeing evidence of their real-world usable lifetimes before they fail. Is it related to the generation of controllers, or are QLC drives failing more than TLC or MLC (2 layer) or SLC drives? My use case is for offline storage, and because the way these drives work, is say, 6 months or 1 yr unplugged and removed from the computer (no power) have any effect on data degradation? Lastly, what does an SSD failure look like (do they just become read-only?) outside of the usual physical damage, and controller or board failure? Since most of the leads I get on failed SSDs come from my videos, I can't say what fails more or what fails less. What we show on how to solve starts to get sent in. Right now the market is fluded with shitty QLC and 3D NAND and cheap TLC. MLC is a luxury these days, and SLC is unobtanium for SSDs :)

Where I'm going with this line of thought is to figure out what to look for in SSDs intended for offline cold storage of backup images. e.g. removable 4TB SSDs (unfortunately only QLC 😞) as backup image targets, unplugged, and they go offsite to a safe somewhere for 6 months to a year before they come back into rotation. Basically, I'm moving entirely to SSDs from HDDs, as I expect them to disappear, much like the floppy drives, then the CD, DVD, and BlueRay drives are gone from most PCs and laptops.
Well that's a lot better than the one with the fried controller that ties the controller to the chip. lol I heard bitlocker will be in place by default on all new win11 installs in a new version possibly 24H2. That seems like a lot of potential for data loss.
I'm curious what options you might've had if your client didn't have the BitLocker recovery key? Would they have been happy with an image of the encrypted drive that they could then potentially mount in order to attempt decryption perhaps with their own IT department? A brilliant video that really makes me wonder how to get started in this field in the UK … I believe PC3000 has a hefty price tag, but considering its usefulness it definitely seems to pay for itself. Is there some feature that helped you choose it over its competitors?
BitLocker would be a problem in most cases if the recovery key is not available. Passware had options to crack the key if there is no TPM, but these machines almost do not exist. Hi, I just had a question about the services. Obviously the more detailed work thats required to either fix a drive or preform data recovery, it would change the cost of "repair" or "fixes". Do you happen to have a flat rate charge for lets say data recovery or repair, however detailed it might be? Totally understand its hard to give estimates without knowing the drive or issues it has until you get started working on it, but just was curious about your services to either use or recommend to some friends. Not worried about a total cost, but an estimate of the average cost for a fix, if you're able to give that, would be appreciated. I ask since myself personally I was wondering if data recovery off a used drive is something you'd be willing to take on? I was also wondering what the limit of devices you work on is? Only drives like hdd, ssd, nvme, or do you work on other storage as well? Was wondering about if somone can do things like vhs tape recovery, ect. Cheers though, love the content regardless.
BitLocker is AES encryption with a 128 bit key (at least). You'll always need the key, I'm afraid. Quantum computers are way too distant into the future, according to Sabine Hossenfelder... ;)
Bitlocker locked me out of my system. I could log into my Microsoft account but no able to retrieve the unlock code. All I had to do was log into my MS account on another computer and delete files from the FREE version of OneDrive.

I am not sure, maybe Kingston has some restrictions utilities. It failed not because of the bad sectors that I didn't capture in the image. It failed because the microcode for initialization was damaged so the PC3000 had to assist with that.
Having the tools is one thing. Knowing how to use them is another! Pretty sweet!
