Can you recommend some good NFC tags? I’ve bought some before, but they had terrible range and so they were tricky to actually connect to.
I had the press my iPhone 13 right up against it in a very specific spot. It was very fiddly.

NFC to create reminder is a neat trick, and CarPlay automation is also cool. More NFC automation ideas would be welcome.

I have an NFC tag on my guitar to automatically open up my tuning app. I have one under my desk that I tap when I want it to turn my phone into do not disturb mode and start playing my focus music on Spotify. I have another one in my car under the steering wheel that I tap to bring up the Exxon Mobil app to pay for gas (that one I actually forget about and it’s probably faster to just ask Siri to open the app then it is to tap)

Yes, but I think using QR codes to take people to a website is better. I have a printed QR code with my guest Wi-Fi password in a QR code in my guest bedroom. I don’t think most people would know to tap an NFC chip.

Same diagnosis here and shortcuts combined with voice recognition is a HUGE add to our quality of life and independence. This video helped me upgraded my previous alarm automation that speaks the weather , emphasizing precipitation & clouds as it effects my vision, my calendar events and a reminder to have a great day. Best of luck!

    Great info.
As someone with macula degeneration and therefore poor eyesight, the use of NFC dots could be very useful for me around the house. I have not used automations or reminders to any great degree so time all of these together, could be very handy for me and people like me.
    Many thanks.

An addition to 7:39: You can also just use your work focus and then trigger an automation based on whether your focus is turned off or on and therefore set the unknown callers silent or not. This is especially useful when your work focus is triggered with your location, at certain times or you just trigger it manually

Apple AirTags also contain a built in NFC. By default, I think they show the owner's contact info (if you provide it at setup).
But they can also be used to trigger automations. So if I name an AirTag "My keys", I can set an automation on my phone to run an action every time it detects "My keys". I set up a simple automation to give me directions home with one tap. The good thing is that if someone else were to scan it, they would only get the default because the automation is specific to my phone.
Just saying that if you want to try out NFC automations, and you already have an AirTag you can try it out on that.

One tip I think could help with one aspect, get some small nfc dots that you can color and put them on the tops of his medicine bottles. (I’ve never done it, but I know it can be done.) Setup an automation to write in his notes app which pill it was and the time, or send you a text for top he scanned. It will take time to get used to the process, but it’s similar to how hospitals do it.

For example, if I'm not home and my phone connects to the handsfree set in my car I want my iPhone to start playing a playlist (this works) and start navigating home with the Waze app. I can start it up but seem not to be able to select or input "home" and start navigating.

Really like the NFC tags for pdfs. Used to use QR codes in an old building to provide key historical information on an indoor orienteering route. But I do like the idea of setting up a pdf on the cat’s dish for all her routines and instructions in case of emergencies. The reminder add is cool but for me quicker for me to ask Siri on watch or iphone.. However, that would exclude the relevant webiste link, so I can see a benefit in such circumstances. Would really like more on NFC and enjoying reading the comments for others’ use of them. Thank you

Can I suggest a video idea? Purpose: Tracking how much time spent at a particular location. So a video to show step-by-step how to get your phone create a calendar entry when the user enters a location with title "you entered location-A at this time"; and when leaves the location a calendar entry titled "you left the location-A at this time". I tried myself using the Shortcuts app but was stuck in the process and gave up. I'm sure you can make it happen! Thanks and keep up the good work. Cheers

This can be done using either the built-in location automation in shortcuts ("Arrive" and "Leave"), which must be triggered manually or you could use a Focus, which you set to be turned on at a certain location, which can be run completely automated, but can be unreliable when exiting the focus mode, while still at that location.
      Step-by-step for the location automation:
      1. Create personal automation
      2. Select "Arrive"
      3. Click on "Location" and select your desired location
      4. Click "Next" on the upper right
      5. Tap the search and type "location"
      6. Select and add "Get Current Location"
      7. Tap the search and type "new event"
      8. Select and add "Add New Event" from calendar
      9. Click on "Title" and type "You entered location - " and select the variable "Current Location"
      10. Click on "Tomorrow at midday" and select variable "Current Date"
      11. Click on "Tomorrow at 1pm" and select variable "Current Date"
      12. Click on the arrow of the calendar event
      13. Toggle off "Show Compose Sheet"
13.a. Additionally you can add the "Current Location" to the "Location" field
      14. Click "Next" on the upper right
      15. Click "Done"
Now to create a new calendar event when leaving your location:
      1. Create new personal automation
      2. Select "Leave"
      3. Click on "Location" and select location set at arrive automation
      4. Click "Next" on the upper right
      5. Tap search and type "location"
      6. Select and add "Get Current Location"
      7. Tap the search and type "new event"
      8. Select and add "Add New Event" from calendar
      9. Click on "Title" and type "You exited location - " and select the variable "Current Location"
      10. Click on "Tomorrow at midday" and select variable "Current Date"
      11. Click on "Tomorrow at 1pm" and select variable "Current Date"
      12. Click on the arrow of the calendar event
      13. Toggle off "Show Compose Sheet"
13.a. Additionally you can add the "Current Location" to the "Location" field
      14. Click "Next" on the upper right
      15. Click "Done"
To make the Focus automation work, you first need a Focus, which you automatically turn on at your desired location. Afterwards you can enter the Shortcuts app:
      1. Create a new personal automation
      2. Select the Focus you want to be automated
      3. Click "Next" on the upper right
      4. Proceed with the same steps as the location automation starting from step 5
      14.a. Uncheck "Ask before running"
      Now when exiting the location:
      1. Create new personal automation
      2. Select the Focus you want to automate
      3. Deselect "When Turning On", Select "When Turning Off"
      4. Click "Next" on the upper right
      5. Proceed with the same steps from the exiting location automation starting from step 5
      14.a. Uncheck "Ask before running"
You could also just edit your calendar entry end set the "End Date" to the "Current Date" when exiting the location, but this is a bit harder to explain

Follow the steps in this video to create the voice control shortcut (for when you set an alarm). But instead, have voice control toggle on when you open your camera app, and toggle off when you close it. Then you would say "turn up the volume" with the camera app open to take a photo. (as it will use the volume up button, which is also a shutter button)

Great video not sure if you have Google Hello doorbell. I miss the notification when someone rings the bell. I’ve been trying to setup an shortcut to send me a text or a louder notification but had no luck any advice?

This was informative. Interested in a dedicated NFC video.
Can you use NFC tags with Apple Watch? Are there any security risks with NFC tags? Which one should we buy?
    Examples are helpful thanks again

Can I have different VPN automations for different apps? Let’s say I want to connect to USA when opening UA-cam because that lets me use “Picture in Picture” mode. But usually I connect to a different country so is there any way to create an automation that specifically connect to USA regardless of my latest manual choice in the VPN app?

Another brilliantly helpful video. NFCs in my holiday rentals will be really cool. Suppose they could link to UA-cam ‘how to’ videos? So yes, more of these automations especially NFC related, please.

I would use QR codes instead. I think most people are a bit more familiar with them.
