I feel like tourists get ripped off in Mexico. You get charged a lot for excursions and taxi drivers take you to places who expect you to buy something. Then get begged for tips everywhere. I was so glad to get back on the ship!

Tourists get ripped off everywhere. The truth is, if you’re visiting a country from a cruise ship you’ll only get to see a tiny portion of the country that’s saturated with venders trying to sell you something and bet that you probably don’t know what things usually cost. I’d much rather get to know a place like the locals. You’ll never get that at a cruise ship port. -Jim

Word. Have u tried exiting customs area in CDMX with a trolley ? Guards would say nope u must leave the trolley at the doors. Guess who then turns up with a trolley smiling and expecting a tip per bag 😂! It’s just disgusting concept!

This was very helpful. I love tipping nicely for great service. This helped me be more gracious when doing so. I went to an all inclusive with my daughter. We needed a battery in our TV remote. A houseman came up and fixed it but declined the Money and seemed taken back...and same with the bartenders. I did not understand that.
Thank you so much for the information.

I hardly keep or use cash when traveling. I've been using a credit card for eating out and also the grocery stores and malls.
So, when I go to the grocery store I seldom have any pesos for tipping. At restaurants you can add a tip to your total payment.

Thanks for the tips about Tips! I have a question, currently the US exchange rate is about .04 cents to 1 pesos, with that said, do mexicans working at resorts prefer to be tipped in US dollars or do they prefer to be tipped in pesos? If USD , should it be increased a little due to having to pay to change it to pesos?

For tipping at an all-inclusive resort you say to tip 15-20%, but there aren't any base prices for the food and drinks so how do I know how much to give? Also, some resorts have bars that you swim up to, are you expected to carry money in your swimsuit for tipping there?

    • @SpanishandGo
      @SpanishandGo  6 років тому +4

Those are good points. Many resorts will still give you a receipt for your drinks even though they are included. They do this for their own inventory. However, if they don't give you a receipt, you can do one of two things:
      1. Ask how much the drinks cost usually, or
      2. Tip like you would for a drink back home.
If a tip for a beer is usually $1 in the US, convert that to pesos and you're looking at about $20 MXN. Mixed drinks usually get $2-3 for a drink, which is about $37-56 pesos right now.
If you're swimming to the bar, you can always tip when you get out of the water. But, if your swimwear has pockets you're in luck. The smaller peso bills ($20, $50) are plastic, and the $10 peso coins work great for tip money!
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

This was helpful since I will be in playa del carmen in March. I am not staying in an all inclusive resort. Then in Cancun for a few days. I am trying to gauge how much peso to bring. How would I get the coins? Do I tip the ADO driver?

    • @SpanishandGo
      @SpanishandGo  6 років тому

Thanks for watching, Tinahindi! Playa is amazing, we love it there. You won't be needing coins right away when you get there. You can get change for most bill wherever you spend them. You can buy a pack of gum or a bottle of water at the airport and then you'll have some change. You don't tip the ADO driver, but you can tip the person helping you with your luggage if you have more than one suitcase. And if you can't get any change, people in all of that area (Cancun, Playa, Tulum, etc.) are also used to get tips in dollars. Just don't give them dollar coins since banks and exchange kiosks don't take them. We hope you enjoy your time there! :)

I would suggest doubling all tip amounts mentioned in this video. 10 pesos used to equal 1 U.S. dollar some time ago. But the peso has gone down. 10 pesos is only worth about 50 cents now.... I'd say tipping at least the equivalent of 1 U.S. dollar is fair for smaller things.

Wolf Village Videos thanks for the comment! The 10 pesos suggestion (currently 54¢ USD) is for a bill of 50 pesos or less ($2.69 USD) - so that’d be 20% or more of your total bill. May is from Mexico and is very familiar with tipping in the service industry there. A 40% tip would be massive, but certainly could put a smile on your server’s face! And there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. Thanks for watching!

This was a helpful video just for general knowledge of Mexican culture. My wife and I have always tipped hotel housekeepers, gas station attendants, and hair cutters in the States, so that won't be difficult to apply. Hi! You're going to an all-inclusive resort on vacation to a another country and you think you're struggling like Mexicans are? Most Mexicans don't have the money to stay at an all-inclusive. $2.50 per day is not a lot to give to those who are making sure you have an enjoyable experience. There are certainly cheaper ways of visiting Mexico. We never stay at resorts ourselves. That's just our personal preference though. @SpanishandGo  6 років тому +1

¿No crees?

¿Cómo me debo dirigir a alguien mayor?

Because of the tipping history in the USA, Mexico is now getting onboard with this tipping stuff. It's because of the Americans and maybe the Europeans. They are saying Mexico may be less preferred to visit than South America from a savings standpoint.

    • @SpanishandGo

In our experience, the only places in Mexico where tipping more than 10% is the norm at a restaurant are tourist destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Puerto Vallarta. I think this has more to do with people from the USA visiting and having no idea what the tipping culture is in the country, so they tip just like they would in the USA. Locals then get used to this and come to expect it.

Where in the world is it requiered that tourists pay more just because they’re tourists? If you’re from some other country and visit the United States, do you think you should be forced to tip beyond the 15-20% of what locals tip? Personally, I don’t think so.
