You did forget to mention that when the roof "collapsed", the floor also dropped about an inch. When you weren't expecting it, it was a very heart stopping moment (especially combined with the roof effect), and never failed to get a lot of screams. You can see a hint of it at 5:39 in your vid. It's very small, but you can see the handrails jiggling.
I kind of miss the old Universal. More and more, practical effects are being replaced by cheaper digital replacements, I personally don’t find the digital effects as impressive. Gorgeous and creative for sure. But they simply can match the effort and skill needed to make something like the Backdraft finale. I really hope that they find a way to put back in more shows and practical effects. Great video as well! Brought back memories. There was nothing like going to Universal during winter when your fingers and face were numb, only to step into backdraft and get some glorious warmth for a few moments.
It's ironic because they're replacing all the impressive practical effects in the actual movies with cheap digital effects too. So I guess Universal is on brand lol.
@@raphaelmarquez9650 Yeah I didn't think that practical effects were non existent. But you don't see them as much where they should be like in Jurassic Park, were the original was mostly practical effects and praised for being so ahead of their time for doing so, to cutting most of their practical effects back and covering the rest on a computer in order to shell out more lifeless remakes and sequels.
I remember going on Backdraft with my Dad years ago. It was very scary to my 8 year old self, but my Dad came out looking positively pale and politely asked me that we not go on it again. This was surprising, as my Dad never turned down the opportunity for a ride and we went on many thrill rides together. But we never went back to Backdraft. It was years later that I would learn that in his youth he had once been a fire fighter and had a traumatic experience putting out a burning building. Clearly the Backdraft show had brought back that memory full force. Dad never talked about it and last year he passed away, taking that secret with him. Miss you Dad.
Perhaps it's because I'm interested in firefighting. Backdraft is the best fire fighting movie I've come across. I was working at a movie theatre when it first came out and saw it for the first time on a day off. The place was packed and I was in the back row of the theatre. Even though I knew what was coming, chills went thru me when that first backdraft happened. It "blew" me right out of my seat. And when the fire disappeared into the walls at the factory, I shouted "OH SHIT!!" cause I knew what was coming. You see, when I was 9 I read a book by Dennis Smith, a fireman for FDNY. What he described in the book was captured by Ron Howard to a tee.
Great video man. It brought back some memories I remember walking through Backdraft when I was a kid in 1995. I remember the barrels exploding and projecting into the air especially. I’ve always enjoyed this movie too. Great stuff
I remember when this opened, I used to live less then 3 miles away from Universal Studios Hollywood, before this and other things around the area were built, the entire Theme Park part of Universal Studios was at the top of the hill the studios were on, then they built the world's longest escalator at the time, bringing the theme park down to the Studio backlot area, they turned the studio commissary into a theme park quick food spot(French frys, hotdogs, pizza slices, sodas, bottle water, etc...) Then the turned one half of a real studio sound stage buildings into the Backdraft the Ride, built a new building for the I Love Lucy experience and the other half of the sound stage into E.T. the Ride, they also relocated the backlot tour embarkment location down there in between The Commissary foods est. and a Star Trek themed gift store, I remember it opened later then E.T., About 3 months I think, it was very hot inside although I think the Miami Vice Action Spectacular show(replaced by Water World) got hotter with its explosions and being outside in the heat during summer, before this the studios way of showing the technical side of this was during the backlot tour, the tour tram stopped outside the same soundstage and tourist disembarked the tram and went inside into a small room were several people would be selected to take part in some scenes, then the chosen were led off while the rest go into the next room, inside you sat down and then a show started, the tour guide would start explaining filming techniques and tricks like how Fred Astair danced on the ceiling, then a curtain would open revealing one of the chosen tourist strapped to a chair laying on a wall in a box the rotated, this is how the Breakin' 2 Turbo dancing on the walls and ceiling scene was done, then the guest gets put on camera and they show how the room worked in filming, next guest went into a second area, here the center part of a Daloren was mid stage just interior, roof and doors, rear and front ends had been removed, in stage were several more of the selected guest one dressed like Marty McFly, this time there showing how CGI and live action sequences were filmed and combined, the one dressed like Marty is instructed to get inside and pretend to run from someone swerving through 5 o'clock L.A. traffic while the other 2 people are guided over to handles attached to the car, in moves the car up and down from side to side the moves the car up and down from front to back, when the guide yells action every one does their part while it's filmed, then your guided into the finale area were a follie stage is, this is how sound effects are added, the taping from the last room is out up on large screens and the rest of the selected people are brought out they are each taught a certain thing to match a scene and then it's synced to the film and then it's played to show the results, the Backdraft ride took the place of all this doing the same thing esentially
I went to this attraction with my family around 2008-2009! One of the only times I've been to Universal,,, this experience traumatized my younger sister. I think we left early because she got so scared. Made me think Backdraft fires were more common than in actuality.
I never got to see Twister in person, but I loved Backdraft. Maybe the Twister videos don't do it justice, but I feel like Backdraft was a more intense experience. I've always been fascinated by special effects, so an attraction like this was a "never miss" when I had a chance to make it out to Universal in California!
Universal Studios Hollywood sits in the very hot San Fernando Valley - hellish summers with little breeze due to being surrounded by mountains. Backdraft was really amazing when it opened - we didn't have much like it except the tram ride special effects at the time. But the Backdraft attraction was misery on hot days - you're already sweating, you get inside, and then you get blasted with hot air over and over. Fun to watch but you walked out looking for the nearest refreshment stand for a cold drink.
In Oct 2015 I visited USJ, and did go on Backdraft. The funniest thing I noticed in the line was the operation unit boxes. They were painted red, and had a number in a circle in gold. The number was CFD, but LAco. FD, station 51. Backdraft was good, Armageddon WDS in DLP was a lot better, since you're in center of the action.
This is why I’ve always preferred Universal over Disney. I was a bit too old for the Disney Renaissance era and was a huge movie nerd. Being able to “ride the movies” and see how they were made was everything to me in the 90s. I wish Universal would embrace this again.
I honestly had no idea that they had a backdraft show in CA, I feel like I missed out. I loved Twister! Still one of my favorite movies! Sam as always great video! Thank you for helping me get through my day at work.
I’m sooooo glad this ride wasn’t in Florida. I would have been forced to go on it and I was traumatized by the movie as a kid. I saw parts of it when I was 6 and literally didn’t sleep at night for 6 days. I stayed up all night every night afraid the house would burn down and only napped during the day when it was “safe” and everyone was awake. My parents put a fire extinguisher in my room and then I slept fine 😂. I was 12 when I went to Universal Florida and I know I would have had nightmares all over again. (I’m 38 and still terrified of fire)
I love this movie so much it's a shame I can't experience this attraction anymore. I'm a firefighter so I have seen this movie so many times lol. I'm also super happy to find out there's going to be a second one.
I think I only went through this attraction once as a kid during one Universal Studios trip, but I specifically remember the film segment about the flame being beautiful. That part brought me right back to being 9 or 10 when I was hearing it for the first time, and as much as the show scared me, it was nice to bring that memory back to the surface for the first time in over a decade.
OMGGGG I have fond memories those memories are me screaming my lil butt off bc I was scared and my mom laughing her butt off bc she loved to take me on “scary” rides when I was younger
Wow, this released some repressed memories I had. Started remembering the queue and my discomfort when watching the actual fire. In particular, I remember the "fresh breath of air" clip with the guy opening the door and how I related that to the fire safety stuff I was learning in elementary school.
I went on back draft as a kid in LA and was absolutely terrified. I remember the fire feeling like it was so close to my face that it burnt. I am glad to see this video. up
Oh my god. Thank you! I went to Universal Hollywood and Disneyland in the late 90s with my parents and out of all the rides and attractions that vacation, I distinctly remember this one the most. I was about 13-14 when I went, and it was such a crazy and visceral experience. I haven't gone to a theme park since, unfortunately, but it does make me sad to hear that it closed down in Universal Hollywood. I hear the Transformers ride is pretty decent? But now I have more incentive to go to Japan soon! Glad to know Backdraft exists again!
I remember viewing this attraction years ago but I had no idea it was based off the movie, I thought it was just a fire effects show they use on movies
I've only been on Twister in Orlando, but I feel like after seeing that in persona and seeing this now, Twister was cooler. I think it is cool how they created a tornado in the building.
I laughed so hard when I heard about the ironic fire in the Back Draft attraction. I'd worked in a themed park in the past & fire is NO joke. Another irony, was Pirates of the Caribbean in 1967 (3 weeks after it opened) had a fire in guess where (the burning village scene) It too, re-opened the next day. LOL
I know it’s still open and was just moved to the upper lot, but I would like to see the history of the old Special Effects Stages show which was right next to Backdraft
I saw this with my family when I was very young. Before the soundstage show started the guide asked if anybody wanted to be dismissed. The preshow videos had scared the hell out of me so I raised my hand, not realizing he was kidding, and everybody laughed at me.
I loved going to backdraft after Jurassic Park, was the best way to dry off. The effects were always great to watch. Although when I visit universal japan in September it was being used for Dead Man's Forest 2 which was amazing! but i was sad to miss out on a classic attraction.

90s universal was the best. They got super lazy now and half their attractions are 3d. No wonder why their annual passes are soo cheap lol.

backdraft is an INCREDIBLE movie, i gotta go watch it right now
I can't hear Ron Howard without thinking about Arrested Development, lol. Makes the ride sound like a comedy where something is about to go wrong.
