I sat the British physics Olympiad, but with no real intent of trying. My teacher just told me that since I was going on to do physics at university it would be a good idea to have a go at the questions to get a taste for the kind of problems I would be seeing going forward. The first round was hard enough, so I can only try and imagine how much work must go into getting into, and then winning, the international one. I now study msci physics at the university of nottingham.
This is truly an awesome Olympiad. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to Nationals (Brazil) this year because it was on the same date as a chemistry Olympiad that is necessary to classify to IChO, but next year if I do well in nationals and end up in the top 2 students jn the selective process, I still have a chance at going to IPhO. Here in Brazil there are a few schools who are really involved in these Olympiad, and it is quite nice to have this group of people with such interests. Even without going to the internationals, this studying atmosphere is already quite inspiring.
That is true, past year i couldn't do the National Olympiad for my school because my teacher forgot to subscribe the school, so i did by the state coordination.
Toby, with your smile and your eyes you are a natural in front of a camera. Every now and then you look directly at the camera as if to say, "Are you guys in there paying attention, listen to what this person is saying." Very charming.

Real physics starts when students are able to start to experiment and ask questions by themselves Theoretically, however, physics starts when students have developed at least a fundamental understanding of mathematics (specifically in linear algebra, calculus, DE, geometry, field theory, statistics etc etc) What does the Olympiad even test if these are high school students (ie probably have very little if no background in higher division math)?
You're right. Without knowing those mathematics topics, it's nearly impossible to solve physics problems. That's why, Olympiad students most of the time take extra math courses in Olympiad Training Centers. However, Olympiads are not for solving mathematically hard physics problems. These problems require theoretical thinking. You can notice that sometimes there're mathematical footnotes in question booklets to help students when they are stuck at solving math rather than physics.
Well if you are an Indian and want to get started for IPHO and clear the first exam start off with HC Verma ( Bible of Indian Physics ) and If you are an International Student startoff with Resnick Hàlliday ( This book will make you love physics )

The age of the contestants should not exceed twenty years on June 30th of the year of the competition. "
