Honestly, try out social media - UA-cam and Instagram. If you can post everyday on instagram and at least once a week on youtube. Share your art and believe in yourself. You don’t need that big of an audience to sell on Redbubble and Etsy. People will find you eventually if your stuff is good and you are consistent!
That's honestly the best hope for artists who want to branch into the industry especially us artists who paid all this money for art college and need that type of money to survive
SO not true. Most UA-camrs and Instagrammers, even famous ones, don't make much money from their account; and most pros are not on YT, obviously, as they're working their butts off. That's a really skewed view, speaking form the perspective of someone who know several top pros working in the industry right now.
@@jas_bataille eh but it helps bring in customers. If you are not well known, for example as a freelance artist, who will commission you if no one knows you? The pros likely are not freelance artists so being on the internet is kinda pointless.

every time I talk to someone about the animation industry and how it pays I always hear that same thing and I LOVE IT, how you're not a millionaire but you're never short, I dont wanna be a millionaire I just wanna be able to pay my bills and visit my mom/ bring my mom to a vacation over to where id live ;;
omg I saw myself in one of the panel clips and I'm shook I was not expecting that. That was a weird rainy day, but it was so inspiring to see you talk about being a professional artist and specifically an artist in the animation industry. It really helped me solidify my goal of becoming a professional artist, and you made it seem really attainable through a lot of hard work! Thanks for doing that and speaking to our lil group, I hope to see you again!
We don't have any unions in the Toronto animation industry, however there were gatherings a few years ago that debated whether we should or not. Some of the studios here barely pay what your worth, but I am extremely thankful to be a 3D modeler at an incredible studio that cares about their workers! Love hearing you talk about the industry :)
Hey! Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what studio you're working at? (only if you want to share ofc!) I've been trying to research good animation companies in Toronto, but I'm not sure where to look!
@@jennelm My studio is under Boat Rocker. They have a few studios under their umbrella that are really good to their artists ! I've found that the smaller studios care alot more about their employees than the bigger ones. Its more of an intimate and family like environment! I recommend you look into studios like Guru, Industrial Brothers, Jamfilled, Tangent, Snowball, Yowza, Rocket Science VFX, Deluxe, House of Cool, etc to start out. Some have old controversial rumors of a lot of overtime, or not paying well, or using artists for free work. But lately I've heard they've been adjusting productions to help treat artists better. But it also depends on where you're going into the animation industry! If you want to be a 2D Designer, you will have a different work experience than someone who's an Animator at the same studio! Same goes for 3D modelers.. VFX artists and etc :)
This was actually... INFORMATIVE?!? Thought it was gonna be like any other video out there on this type of thing, but gave it a listen. Growing up, I wish I had people like you to look up to when it comes to art. This is an awesome video and I’m positive this would help a lot of people!
You are literally inspiring me to do more today with my art! Thank you so much for this video!! I recently graduated from UCF with a degree in Experimental Animation this past May. Unfortunately, corona hit and uprooted my entire end of semester art shows and junk....but I decided to go back and get my MFA in Animation & Visual Effects now! Nearing graduation, I've always had a funk of "what do I do now?". But I'm so glad to hear what you have done and illustrating your own book is fantastic!!
I was struggling with what career to choose recently because I really want to pursue art, but I was worried about how I could financially support myself and I was feeling very frustrated. However, this video is exactly what I needed, thank you so much!
Although this is great advice and offers hope, be very wary. Understand that art is a very competitive field and there is always a chance that it might not work out. Not saying that it won’t. Just saying there’s a chance. My advice would be to major in Marketing, Business, or something in computers. And minor in the art field you’re interested in.

tysm for making this video! I’ve been interested in the art industry for a long time (I don’t really know what major, but I’m working on that :) ) and this video made me more confident in myself and my dreams for the future ! also, could you make a video about all the main art majors there are out there? like graphic design, illustrations, animation, story boarding, etc? I feel like I don’t really know what major I want, I mean I know what I’m not interested, but I’m sure there’s a major out there perfect for me that I don’t know abt
I go to Montevallo, so I'm not sure how specific it is to us (it's pretty traditionally focused) but our art program is either a BFA or a BA/BS. A BFA is a bachelor of fine arts, and is essentially a full art degree. A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science is getting a major in art and a minor in something else. So, either way, but especially for the BFA instead of a major you have a concentration. Concentrations include painting, sculpting, graphic design, drawing etc. We have all these in foundational classes, so by sophomore/junior year you can decide.
What advise could you give to someone who is struggling with getting out there to get their art noticed? I’ve made an Etsy for stickers but I’m not making many sales for my items. I’m a small artist on the internet who is always making my content but it’s been really difficult getting noticed.
If you aren’t already I would try making fandom art of some kind. It’s much easier to get people to buy a product about something they already like then convince them to buy original works
I would recommend getting recognition by appealing to the masses such as fandom art/ fan art. That way people will come to u for a mutual understanding, and then when you make new things, you'll already have a following. (Imo, im not a business person:))
This is awesome info! Thanks for dropping all of this! Starving artist is only for those with limited information, and resources. Gonna check out some of your other videos.
My dream was to become a storyboard and graphic design artist. I was accepted into university and chose the graphic design major, once my mom found out, she went on a rampage and basically screwed it into my head that artists are failures and I’ll never get anywhere in life as an artist and also made me change my major. I started with nursing, couldn’t enjoy it. Then I changed to social work; I thought I was enjoying it, I haven’t drawn for a good 4 years since then, I basically wasted my university years and dropped out because I wasn’t enjoying anything. Only thing I enjoyed was my elective art class. I really felt like I could have gone somewhere if I had support. I’m about to be 23, already married and the only supports I’ve had for art is my husband and dad. Now I’m slowly trying to get back into the flow of things and start over. Although I feel like I messed up with university, gotta start somewhere for the bottom and work my way up! 😤😤

im the same too. i have no audience at all. but i know that i'm improving day by day. the more i draw and try out new things. the more my art becomes better. but it sure takes a lot of time. mostly defends on you. how much time you spend on art a day. not only drawing we need to lots of research too.

@@babygirlari1736 yeah and those of us who dont have the means for school do what?????? 🙄
I've been in online classes for so long that when the video pauses for an ad, I expect a quiz...
I LOVE that intro omg 😂 This video is so helpful! I love that you're transparent about finances, it's so helpful especially as a young artist!
hahaha thanks Nicole!! I hope more artists in the future can talk about finances too!
Step one: be instagram/youtube famous
Fame helps; but it's really just a tool of influence for the purpose of making sales. You don't need to be famous to make a lot of money.
Hehe I'm early I hope whoever sees this has a good morning/afternoon/night!!!!
good morning! thank you that is so sweet of you c:
Good morning to you to

Thank you!
Good night/afternoon/morning to you too

I feel really inspired whenever I see these videos. It shows you can make art work, even if it's a side thing, or your main thing. There is still a lot of way to make passive income from your art and I can't wait to see the comic book! I'm totally going to get copies for myself and request it at libraries so more people can read it!
Not trynna be that awful person, but it’s all luck.. I’ve seen those who gives it all, but nobody notices them and yet there are those who effortlessly does the simplest art, gain so many audience.. I don’t really get what the society wants exactly..
this video was so great! i want some more examples of how you handle your finances, so if you could give me your bank info, a working credit card number, the expiration date and the 3 numbers on the back that’d be great! 🤲🏾
i’m kidding but really, i love when people within the industry can be more transparent about salary and finances, it really helps younger artists, and i, as well as a lot of others really appreciate it! 🥺❤️
hahaha if you like, subscribe, and hit that notification bell, i'll even include my SSN in the next vid 😎haha but thanks! glad this could be helpful as well :)
every time I talk to someone about the animation industry and how it pays I always hear that same thing and I LOVE IT, how you're not a millionaire but you're never short, I dont wanna be a millionaire I just wanna be able to pay my bills and visit my mom/ bring my mom to a vacation over to where id live ;;
Even if I'm not an artist, I still love to listen to your videos while I'm doing something, it's really interesting to listen ♥
thanks that means a lot to me!
omg I saw myself in one of the panel clips and I'm shook I was not expecting that.
I appreciate that you explained things out and let us know how YOU handle them as an individual and also highlighted that you have a full time job too. It's just nice to know options and to be reasonable with yourself as a person! THANK YOU.

moving to burbank in 3 weeks, saved up over the pandemic. thanks so much for everything yo!! animation for tv is something i’ve always wanted to do and your a big part of why! just being close in age w/ you kinda gave me more hope as seeing this as a reality. love you and your channel dude 🖤
This makes me feel so excited. I've wanted to go into the animation field since middle school. This makes me feel like I could really do it. I just pray that I can make it into college and that I don't find out I'm actually really bad like people say.
Good luck! :)) And remember, art is a skill that takes practice, you can't magically be awesome at it, so don't worry
this is giving me like a lot of hope buuut there's still that voice in the back of my head that says "oh I'm just seeing the top percent, ~survivorship bias~ ,something something" :/
Aww I'm sorry that voice is doing that annoying thing (I still have that voice too)..I hope you can eventually overcome it. I for sure am not in a top percent, and just a gal tryna get through life, so if I could get to this point, you can definitely too!

Im an artist, and ive always wanted to get into graphic design or anything that is connected through digital media
ive seen a few different videos on here about freelance artists explaining what they do. i really love that she stays focused and gets to the point. it's great and makes me feel like im not wasting my time watching this
Gotta appreciate the breakdown. Loving the sources you list. Just amazing how you branch out as an artist/creative. Thank you for this one 👌🏾👌🏾. Glad Im on track mostly
thank you!! and you're doing great! 👍🏼👍🏼
Your gum road sketchbook is gorgeous, I love your traditional work, I’m glad you can have a vacation from being so busy
Love this!! I feel like creatives are really pressured to go out on their own, so I'm glad you talked about your storyboard job too! It's important for younger creatives to know they can have a 9-5 and still be successful in other creative ways. ✨
It's really interesting having only recently discovered your channel. Going back and watching videos where your gainfully employed in the animation industry and then fast forward to you being unemployed for months and bolstering your secondary sources of income to basically become your primary. In fact in this very video you hadn't even produced your graphic novel yet. Just interesting how things have transpired
This vid popped up recommended for me. I’m only a few minutes in but hearing you’re a storyboard artist makes me so happy! I’m in school right now hoping to do that!!

Oh wow, you're one of the first people I've heard who said I could have a normal life from art.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and tips. They are educational and hugely inspirational. It also reminded me not to beat myself up for pursuing my interests and that there are other ways of making money where I can see myself trying out. I rarely leave comments, but I just wanted to thank you for being a source of such positive vibes.
This is really helpful. As a junior in highschool who has always loved art and excelled in it more than anything else in school I knew I wanted to do this with my life but needed a video like this to give me examples of how to make money as an artist because I think I can speak for most artists with the experience of growing up around the idea that artists are broke

There shit tons of people stealing art from artist and making easy money and the worst part is there isn't any community or group where you can report or fight with these art thieves.
If only your artistic skill was as contagious as your enthusiasm.

At this point i think i really need a real job , i can't even make 10$ from art per month , i sacrificed everything to become an artist but i regret it it's better if i just kept it as a hobby .

if you have any sort of art degree or can work professionally for a company, you can live from that, starting freelancing doesn' work for everyone, especially if you have no big audience/popularity online and it's too hard in general

For your patreon, you could post “what I do in a day” kind of videos where you take us through your working process and give information and tips maybe✨
tysm for making this video! I’ve been interested in the art industry for a long time (I don’t really know what major, but I’m working on that :) )
and this video made me more confident in myself and my dreams for the future !
also, could you make a video about all the main art majors there are out there? like graphic design, illustrations, animation, story boarding, etc?
WOW!
Keep up the good wrok!
What advise could you give to someone who is struggling with getting out there to get their art noticed? I’ve made an Etsy for stickers but I’m not making many sales for my items. I’m a small artist on the internet who is always making my content but it’s been really difficult getting noticed.
Use Pinterest and make a ton of boards to showcase your stickers. That’s where I get most of my visits.
