    Using my brand new 850 in Central Canada where the temperature hovered around minus 30 all day. Got up to temp no problem and recovered quickly after opening the lid. Used about 15 lbs of pellets in 12 hours at 30 below... saving good bye to my GMG Davy Crocket! Expensive grill but well worth it!

    Well I think you just upsold me on the Timberline! My number one question was "could this smoker handle a Canadian winter" (I'm on the prairies as well MB). It is pricey, but if I can use my smoker year round rather then in our 4 months of summer then it's worth it! Thank you for the great video!

    Hey this was a great review, glad I found it. I am looking to get the Timberline 850 or 1300 and needed some real information about it with some non-bias opinions. I use outdoor grills, griddles and gas fire stove tops year round in Oregon. Rain or shine, Snow or summer heat, I'm outside cooking. This was a perfect review to tip me over the edge on getting one of these. Thanks for taking the time to put out a review like this.

    I can’t recommend the timberline 850 enough. It’s just finished doing a 5pm to next day 1pm brisket (meat church weekday cook), followed by pork ribs for a further 5 hours. This bad boy chugged along for over 24 hours! Without so much as topping up the hopper once before going to bed.

    Great video, really enjoyed it!. You gave a great overview. I'm a long time BBQ owner and considering purchasing a Timberline as my first smoker. I find it really odd that Traeger only allows you to use Traeger pellets. Where is that documented? I've looked on their website and in the manual and can't find it. I see talk online, however I can't find anything that explicitly says "your warranty is voided if you use non-Traeger pellets".

    Great video. I'm looking into getting a Traeger and was wondering if the double insulation is necessary for my location, that being Wisconsin, USA (which is basically like Canada during the winter). Looks like that's a yes. Based on your video it seems like you entertain a lot. Do you ever wish you had the space of the 1300 vs the 850? Or is the 850 sufficient.

    • @sixthisoverdrive

      I have owned my 850 since the week they were first released almost 4 years ago. I have done long cooks in minus 20 in the winter to over 100 in the summer. The insulation is top notch and holds temps like a regular oven. Spend the money, you won't regret it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • @TonysTravels2023

    Good review, I have exact same machine. Only one point I'd disagree on. Too be honest I think it should NOT have the capacity to turn it on via a phone from remote location. Many people put a few bits of kit in there smoker, equipment bits, it's cold, your done, put a few bits inside, cover it over.
    Just finishing work? Oh I'll turn the Treiger on, will be hot when I get home. It's so easy to leave something inside, totally forget. Hence I think it's vital "you are there on site" to turn it on. I have mine linked to my phone mine is also linked to my neighbours phone.
    Pak, do me a favour, nip into my garden turn my Traeger on. It's no great hardship. Different point of view that's all. Once again great review. Personally I think it's worth the m on eh to buy the higher grade insulated option. I get next to zero temperature fluctuation. Next to zero!

    I have the Traeger Pro and was looking to move up to an Ironwood or Timberline for the Super Smoke mode. I was curious as you mentioned about Super Smoke for the smoke flavor. I added a smoke tube to my Traeger Pro but it gives it a bad smoke flavor. Then I was told that if you set the Traeger Pro to around 180 temp you will have virtually the same result as Super Smoke mode. I did smoke some food at 180 to 165 for a couple hours and then turned the heat up to finish the food. The flavor improved but still not as smokey as my electric master built smoker that I used before. So I was curious as I am now looking into doing an upgrade to the Timberline or the Ironwood just for the Super Smoke mode. If it was that much of a difference in flavor of smoke over the Traeger Pro 780. For me I enjoy the heavy smoke flavor but enjoy how easy the Traeger works and it is so easy to clean up and put away. Great video by the way!

    • @brianveestrom6784
      @brianveestrom6784 4 роки тому +1

      Hey Brett, I have a pro34 and I can relate to what you are saying. I came from an electric smoker also. If I want that heavy yummy smoke, I use the electric. After experimenting with gas, pellet, charcoals and electric (I use all 4) I can say that the electric is the best for smoky flavour. The humidity and density of smoke in the chamber cannot be matched. When doing briskets I have a hybrid method of electric smoking for an hour then putting it on the pellet grill @ 250F for the duration. The same for turkey, electric first then on to the pellet grill. The electric does not produce the smoke ring or bark that the pellet does. I also think about getting one of the new traegers' for the super smoke mode but I don't think it can deliver what I am looking for.

    • @brianveestrom6784
      @brianveestrom6784 4 роки тому +1

      There is one thing that I have not tried yet that may help out is to raise your food in the cooking chamber. Put your food on a rack and elevate it above the main rack with a couple of bricks. I will give this a go for christmas brisket coming up. I will not presmoke, I will put on the smoke setting (or 180 as you mentioned) for a couple hours then bump it up to 250. Good luck!

      Hi Brian, thank you for the information. I did go ahead and buy the Traeger Timberline 1300 and have the Traeger Pro 780. So far I smoked a couple items. I do not see much difference from super smoke over just smoking at 180 to 190 on Traeger Pro. I do have a couple Masterbuilt electric smokers. I think I will try your hybrid method too.

      @@redshift2026 Hello, I did notice a difference using a brand that is not from Traeger. Their Hickory Pellets on Amazon in a 40 pound bag. This change in pellets did make a difference for me. I have the Pit Barrell Cooker and an Offset smoker and really enjoy the flavor of the offset. I have been only buying the Hickory version of the pellets and have not tried other varieties but the Hickory has made a difference. I do notice in an off brand from Traeger that the temps are off by maybe 10 to 15 degrees and the only difference is the change in pellets. But I have gone through 3 bags or 120 pounds and have not had any problems with the Traeger other than the difference in temp.. Being summer now I have been smoking with my offset smoker and enjoying the weather. As fall and winter come along I will be using the Traeger Timberline 1300 more. I do enjoy the simplicity of the Traeger but there is a difference in smoke flavor for me anyway from an offset smoker to my Traeger. But the Premium Cooking Pellets from the link above is the only pellet that I use now in my Traeger. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEYVS2O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      Hello, hey I switched to a different pellet on amazon on my Traeger timberline 1300 and I only used the Hickory blend but yes it did make some difference along with a smoke tube filled with the same pellet. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEYVS2O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      smoke tube www.amazon.com/MAZE-N-Pellet-Tube-Smoker-Design/dp/B00CS6YFIC/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=amazin+smoke+tube&qid=1594073609&s=lawn-garden&sr=1-9 The switch in pellets only caused a difference in smoker temp of about 15 degrees. But for me there was a difference in smoke flavor. I also have an offset smoker which I love and pretty much smoke with wood logs during the summer and early fall. To get close to that flavor on the Traeger Timberline 1300 even with Super Smoke on I use the smoker tube and that change in pellets. I have used over 120 pounds of the above pellets and have had no problems other than a minor temp. difference. I also own the Traeger pro 780 and the same pellets and smoke tube in that one as well. Yes I was a little disappointed when I wanted that offset smoker flavor from the Traeger. I still think cooking with apple or hickory logs is the way to go.

    I own a Timberline 850 for 2 years and only had problems. I spent more time with troubleshooting than with BBQ. In short: it simply stops grilling obviously for several reasons (viod in the pellets, stall of the software), it took more than half a year to even get the firmeware update installed, the Traeger support in Europe is a pure nightmare, after 10 sessions the fan did not work any more, and so on. Even in Feb. 2020 the controller crashed and turned the grill off immediately only because I changed the temperature on the grill.

      Setiritter that’s a shame. I have run mine over the entire winter so far without any issues. I do have to stir the pellets after about 5 hours or when it reads 50 percent, but I have done that since new. It has maintained temperature even below -20 Celsius. I have never had the grill stop, but I’ve had to fight with the app a couple of times, but that’s not huge to me as it’s a bit gimmicky anyway. Thanks for letting us know that it isn’t perfect for everyone.

      Ben Peeler 15 would be about the limit on the bottom rack, however, I’ve been told that the briskets are best around the 10 lb Mark, and you could easily put one on the top rack. This thing is seriously deep.

    One thing I was surprised about is that super smoke only works at temps of 225 or less. So cooking steaks over high heat we don't get that heavy smoke that we are after. Amazing unit however.

    The only issues I have is the fact that it cost more then a cost of a actual wood pellet stove for our home to heat your house. Second Weber has something extremely similar for less the half the cost. I would say go with Weber. You seem like you got this for free with all the advertising your doing for this company.

      3d nope. Bought it for full price. I did have construction points to use at the Home Hardware, but I could have bought anything with it. This and the low end traeger(can’t remember the model) are the only ones I’ve tried. They did not have the Weber at the store I had the points, and it had just been released. It seems like a great option and I’d like to test one, but unlike what you feel, no one gives me anything. (Not sponsored by anyone, including Traeger). Maybe you could tell us from your personal experience how the Weber works...we would appreciate the feedback. Thanks for your comments.
