  • One of the many television series I have worked on during my long career as a video editor was the final season of "All in the Family." The groundbreaking series aired on CBS from 1971-79 after 182 episodes. Here is the raw footage of the opening title, videotaped August 24, 1978. I also included a short clip from the final season Thanksgiving episode.
From wikipedia: All in the Family is often regarded in the United States as one of the greatest television series in history. Following a lackluster first season, the show soon became the most watched show in the United States during summer reruns and afterwards ranked number one in the yearly Nielsen ratings from 1971 to 1976. It became the first television series to reach the milestone of having topped the Nielsen ratings for five consecutive years.

Wow, this is exciting to see! The raw footage, complete with that last-minute touchup of Carroll O' Connor's makeup, hearing the voice from the control room "settle please, I hear conversation"... Hearing Jean Stapleton warming up on the piano. It's good to put a face to someone who was doing the editing on this show.
Editing fascinates me because only in the last few years have I come to realize just how much of a difference a good editing job vs. a bad editing job can make in the finished product. I've read how some films were saved by a knowledgeable editor deftly re-editing raw footage to shore up a movie that just wasn't making it. I know the same goes for a television show because I've seen things that were cut so poorly, it just ruined an otherwise enjoyable episode.
Thanks for sharing these things and your recollections here.

Yes, we did have it made back in those days! Now we do not have it made any more because this nation is no longer proud and strong.
