This was ground-breaking TV in the 1970s! it had black actors in prime roles. It poked fun at british colour prejudices. It reversed the roles & showed how ridiculous perceptions could be. it actually showed how friendships could traverse racial stereotypes - all through laughter - but then it suddenly became the worst possible "racist" program ever & disappeared from our screens. Even now it is presented as an example of dreadful racist jokes & needs to be "cancelled".
but the simple reality is - this program helped break down race barriers better than any campaign, riot or even law change.. It made us ALL LAUGH at how ridiculous it is to judge someone based on their colour, or background!

I agree with you because even though the initial fallout was racial abuse from some white kids, we had adequate ammunition to fire back and we had a few fights but the fact they became friends was quite important. We were able to laugh at the foolishness of the racists. We had our hero in Bill who always defeated Eddie. As a black kid growing up in England in the 70s I can only talk about my experience and we loved the show and loved Bill and Barbie.

Love Thy Neighbour was pretty much a public service broadcast against racism, and yet it was cancelled by the hard of thinking woke mob. And then I heard To Kill A Mockingbird was banned in American schools by the same woke mob. The book has always been read in schools to teach children that racism is wrong. The mob want racism and division under the guise of anti-racism and anti-division. This preoccupation will be our downfall.

I agree , as well as highlighting the racism it also showed how often women can be the sensible ones stuck in between . On the political aspect Eddie was quite happy with the anti racism campaigns he was involved with , until a black family moved next door and his own prejudices came to the forefront when he was directly ' affected ' so to speak . Agree about Rudolph Walker who was also great in Eastenders and The Thin Blue Line .

To get an even greater understanding of how this program actually helped race relations in this country, you’d need to watch all the episodes to see how their love/hate relationship developed; how they managed to get along despite their differences and bigotry. The bigotry and racism was always there but they formed a workable relationship despite this. This program was just as popular in BAME communities as it was everywhere else.

As so many others have already commented, it is good to see somebody who both understands the message of the show and appreciates the humour. I certainly remember watching the show back in the seventies and even to me, a young teen in a small 100% white town, it was clear that the butt of the joke was racism (rather than the characters who were essentially just cyphers). Through the to and fro between Eddie and Bill, the level-headedness of the wives and, as the series progressed, the growing relationship between the two men, the ridiculousness of racism (interesting to note, referred to here as 'racialism'--common usage at the time) was made real and apparent.
The show was groundbreaking in having black actors in recurring lead roles, a first in British television. From some retrospectives a few years ago, it seems that the show was as popular among the black community here in the UK as it was in the general population. For many it was the first significant representation in peak time television and the experiences were seen as authentic, if exaggerated for comedic effect.

I grew up watching this programme during my early teens. We had a few black kids in our school. One of them was 'assigned' to me, I had to show her around and help her. She soon became my best friend. We walked to her home one day, (Hello June James!!) her mum was breast feeding her new sister. June got straight on doing her kitchen chores, but not before she got washed and changed into clean clothes. We only went out again when mum and little sister was happily resting. June's brothers started coming in from school. They were respectful of mum and checked on their little sister before they got changed and went to play football. I often think of that lovely time in my life. I didn't see witness any racism, but yes, some blacks were called nig-nogs the same way we were called whiteys by them. Rarely saw any fighting though. They were all good at sports, we always wanted them on our teams!!

Both Bill and Eddie called each other names, but I never remember hearing those in school.
Eddie was a fool - funny, but a fool. I loved the 2 ladies the best. Some of my closest friends through school and working life were black - my parents and extended family brought us up to accept people for being people, not because of colour or religion.
There is too much hate in this world - I don't know where it shall end; but back in the 70's this was entertainment - I know it isn't deemed as such know by the "woke" culture, but I'm Thankful to have lived my life through those years. I'm sorry and sad that youngsters don't get to see this type of programme anymore.
Was good to see you laugh and see it for what it was Jay.
People laughed at Eddie - I'm still laughing at Eddie. Good to watch this again. Thank you 🙏

Being a sitcom, it should be obvious to anyone that anything said or suggested within is an exaggeration done purely for comedic value. Of course there were people like Eddie, which is why the show went out of its way to highlight his blatant ignorance. He was the one who always ended up being ridiculed and the butt of jokes. Mind you, Bill could almost be as bad, sometimes. The 2 wives got on well, to the point of knowing when the, '2 big kids', were about to kick off. The insults were largely, 'playground level', anyway. Ridiculous notions that had no serious intent, as such, but served to show how narrow-minded some people's attitudes could be about that which they had little to no understanding.
You got it in one. The whole thing has been reduced down to a ridiculous level and the only way to treat it is as one big joke. Making fun/ridiculing the bigots who have such views, is the best way to deal with them. Make no-one above ridicule, regardless, so that we can all see things from the same perspective. The scene where Bill reacts to being called more or less a savage by returning with hardly any clothes on, 'war paint', on his face and brandishing a knife shouting, 'one for the pot!', is highlighting just how preposterous Eddie's assertions were about him being uncivilised. Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone, as they say.
I always considered the double N word you highlighted as always being rather infantile. Something you expect a silly little boy to say in a playground. So, when a fully grown man says it, it just comes across as nonsensical. And I guess that's why it's used in this show.

Sidney Poitier deserves a different mention. In the very first episode of Only Fools and Horses in 1981, there is an argument between Rodney Trotter and his grandad over the pronunciation of Sidney Poitier's surname. Rodney says it's Poitier, and grandad says it's Potter. Rodney then asks del Boy about whether he's right and Del Boy says "I don't know about you but I fink (sic) it's Harry Belafonte but you can please yourselves".

Like a few on here, I grew up watching this during the 70's (approx 45 years ago) and the whole ethos was to show how stupid and ridiculous "Eddie" was being. His thoughts and opinions, which are very magnified in this show, regarding people of colour, really got the viewers talking.
Also, his morals were non existent, ie : stealing garden flowers and the gate - yet he accused his new neighbours as "thieves". The double standards and blatant irony were not wasted on the viewers .....
..... Nobody actually liked Eddie (the viewers) we all rooted for Bill.
This programme was brilliant in that it really addressed prejudism and bigotry. It had the knock on effect of reducing racial slurs, as nobody wanted to be a stupid as "Eddie".
I'm glad you enjoyed this show, but please recognise it for what it truly was - A clever way of highlighting how stupid racism was/is.

Shows like this were there, as mush as anything, to put the conversations into the room. 50 years ago (and it was 1972 when this episode was first broadcast) the UK was a very different place - very few black, Asian or any races other than white, and in general people were highly ignorant of anything outside their day to day lives (I didn't have Chinese or Indian foods until I went to university as my parents wouldn't entertain the idea - the first time my father ever had spaghetti bolognaise was a treat as he set about cutting the pasta into 1" pieces - probably about 1978 - when have SB when you could make it into a lovely shepherd's pie????). You can imagine the conversations the day after broadcast would be "Did you see LTN?", "What would you do if a black person moved next door?" It gave people a chance to discuss subjects, air their views, realise their misconceptions. learn. I'd be more annoyed at how it portrays the English white man as stupid, idle, uneducated, petty thief etc, especially when it was tied so much into his left wing political beliefs. It shows how ignorance and testosterone can lead to very high degrees of stupidity. You should also watch Till Death as Do Part and the later revival show, In Sickness and In Health - the main character is similarly portrayed and has a number of totally unfounded beliefs about race, sexuality etc. (So funny in ISAIH when Alf gets a home help who is both black and gay!). Great to see someone get past what is now unacceptable language.

Interesting comments and many truisms however I have just watched a "James English-Anything Goes" 90-minute video interviewing Ovie Peddy from my area 2 miles from Brixton (I was born and raised there for 29 years from 1954) and he had already committed 400 known crimes by the age of 14 and his Brother: Quincy is my next viewing Richard. The extraordinary thing is that Ovie went to a posh Private school and his beloved Grandfather was very wealthy(it became obvious why as he was "connected" ) and this is the kind of, admittedly, the extreme story I have been familiar with for my of my 67 years. The complete antithesis of "ignorance".Sadly, I have too much knowledge of what transformed previously very safe, archetypal British areas so there are 2 sides to this but that is for another platform and another day.

    Very good reaction.. Yes.
I used to sit with my mum and watch this when I was little. The whole point was that Eddie was a total idiot and prejudice was shown for what it is .. absurd. Prejudice always obscures the truth. I am 60 now and i tell you when I was growing up there was a lot of rascism around, a lot.. shows like this helped to undermine people like Eddie a humanise black people to a population that struggled back then with integration.
I never thought that this opening episode was that funny but the series gets much funnier as it goes on. Some of the best episodes that come later if memory serves are when Eddie and Bill have common cause and have to work together. There are some more characters to come as well down the pub.

The best thing that happened was for this programme to be removed from screens.

The writing and comedy in this show was genius. If I remember correctly, apart from showing the absurdity of racism, it also generally portrayed that it was the men that were the main issue of mistrust and conflict, whereas the women generally flowed better with each other and just got on with ‘getting on’.
Unfortunately, I think UA-cam removed it, but if you can find a video of the sketch ‘Black friends’ by Little Britain (David Walliams and Matt Lucas), do watch it, because I think you’ll absolutely love it.
Edit: what you will find on UA-cam are reaction videos to the sketch.
